SWINDON Supermarine open their Southern League Premier campaign tomorrow against a Rugby Town side determined to avoid their relegation worries of last season.

The Warwickshire outfit avoided the drop by a mere two points last term and were heavily reliant on the abilities of star front man David Kolodynski (pictured inset), who finished as the league’s top scorer on 26.

But tomorrow’s visitors to Hunts Copse have bolstered their forward line ahead of this season, re-signing Matt Wells and also recruiting ex-Crewe man Josh Thompson.

And if either of those new faces can gel quickly with Kolodynski, who looks certain to start for Rugby, Marine’s defenders could have their hands full come tomorrow afternoon.

On the 20-year-old, Marine manager Mark Collier, said: “He was top scorer in the league last season and I’m sure he would want to be again this season. He makes good runs and he’s quick."

Collier is still hopeful of bringing in at least one more player himself in the near future, though the Rugby game will probably come too soon.

Ex-Swindon Town coach Ady Williams trained with Marine on Wednesday and Collier admitted: “We’re looking to progress the situation.

“He’s not 100 per cent fit yet. He’s done lots of gym work but he needs to do some football-related training. When that’s happened we hope something concrete will take place.”

Williams was joined by two triallists at training this week, one being utility man Mo Casal, the brother of Town player Yinka Casal.

Another who Collier had the chance to have a look at was former West Brom winger Seamus Kelleher.

Marine go into tomorrow’s game missing Gary Horgan, who sustained a rib injury in the friendly against Swindon Town, while David Glover is also out.

But Justyn McKay has won his race to overcome his long-running ankle problem, with the midfielder played nearly an hour of the last friendly against Atherstone Town.

“He’s done a lot of work on his own so credit to him for that,” said Collier. “He’s a little short of match fitness, but his general fitness is good.”

Elsewhere, Chippenham Town will begin their chase for promotion with a tough test against one of the league’s new teams, Nuneaton Town.

Meanwhile, in the Southern League Division One South and West, Cirencester Town kick-off their campaign with a trip to Paulton Rovers.
