Reid's relishing his 'New Dawn'

MARLON Reid is aiming to use the pain of defeat to spur him on to bigger and better things, starting back in the ring at the Oasis next month.

The 27-year-old middleweight is the star attraction on Keith Mayo’s ‘New Day, New Dawn’ show on Friday, December 4, and will be hoping to prove that his last outing was merely a blip.

Suffering from a chest virus, Reid surrendered his unbeaten professional record in Torquay in October, but instead of wallowing in self-pity the local lad insists it is all part and parcel of his in-ring education.

“My last fight didn’t go as well as I wanted,” he told the Advertiser.

“I wasn’t helped that I had a virus before the fight, but I didn’t want to let the fans down.

“There wasn’t as much support as I wanted either, but hopefully Swindon will make up for that and I will make sure I come back stronger this time.

“I wasn’t disappointed with what happened at all, because I see it all as a learning curve.

“You get your good moments and your bad ones, but it is how you bounce back when you’ve lost that matters.

“Look at footballers - when they lose they come back from it and can be better for it. It’s all about learning and I think you learn more about yourself in the hard times.

“I’m really looking forward to the show in December - it’s always a good show in Swindon, so I can’t wait, and it’s not long now.

“The home crowd and home support are normally really good and I’m sure they will turn out in their numbers again.”

At ‘New Day, New Dawn’, Reid faces a six-round bout against Pawel Trebinski, who has two wins and a draw to his name from eight professional fights.

Nationality aside, it will be a case of stepping into the unknown for the Swindonian, but he is unconcerned about his opponent and remains determined just to get the job done.

“All I know is that he’s from Poland - that’s about it,” explained Reid.

“But I can’t knock him because he hasn’t boxed any mugs.

“I’ll just take it as it comes and see how I do.

“It is important to get back to winning ways again. Being a prospect you’ve just to go out there and show what you can do, and keep on improving. I will be looking to do that with a victory.”

Reid has some new stablemates at the town’s Horseshoe Gym, after promoter Keith Mayo signed up former British middleweight kickboxing champion Andrew McCaffrey and 22-year-old Kelvin Young to the professional ranks last month.

And with two more fellow Swindonians on board, Reid believes it spells out a positive message to any promising youngster in Wiltshire.

“Macca and Kelvin are good lads, and it’s good to see two more boxers come out of Swindon,” he explained.

“It’s good that you’ve got a local gym promoting local boxers, and in the near future it looks like there will be more to come, so it’s exciting times.”

Tickets for the event are available from Kelvin Young on 07541 904603, Keith Mayo (07789 890453) or the Oasis Box Office (01793 445401).
