FULL TIME: Carlisle 0 Town 1

CHARLIE Austin's first goal for Swindon - on his full debut - gave them all three points with a 1-0 win away at Carlisle this afternoon.

The young striker hit the back of the net in the third minute after reacting quickest to Billy Paynter's cross, and Town were good value for the scoreline.

Carlisle only threatened from set pieces and a series of long range efforts, as a superb defensive display helped Swindon to victory.

Alex Revell had a glorious chance to double Swindon's advantage late on, but could only fire over when clean through.

Here are the key moments from today's game:

Two mins: Matt Robson swings in a corner which defender Danny Livesey connects with at the far post, but steers his effort well wide.

Three mins (GOAL 1-0 Austin): Jon-Paul McGovern and Billy Paynter combine down the right for the latter to send a bouncing cross into the area.

Charlie Austin gets across his marker and takes a touch before rifling a strike past Carlisle keeper Lenny Pidgeley and into the far corner.

10 mins: Tom Taiwo shoots from the edge of the area, but it takes a deflection and is easy for David Lucas to gather.

13 mins: Robson's floated diagonal pass over the top is challenged for by Joe Anyinsah and Lecsinel Jean-Francois.

The Town man goes down in the heap, leaving Anyinsah just 10 yards out with only Lucas to beat, but he somehow stabs the ball wide.

16 mins: Graham Kavanagh feeds Robson who cuts inside and drills a right-footed shot straight at Lucas from 25 yards.

18 mins: Kavanagh fires in a volley from just outside the area which Lucas does well to turn around his near post for a corner.

23 mins: Adam Clayton picks the ball up in the middle of the park, strides forward and attempts a chip from fully 35 yards. However, with Lucas back-pedalling, his effort is just off target.

48 mins: McGovern's corner to the edge of the box is met by the head of Kevin Amankwaah. His effort is blocked and Jonathan Douglas blazes the rebound well over from 20 yards.

50 mins: Ian Harte tries his luck from a free-kick almost out on the right touchline. The ball is heading high into the far corner until Lucas tips it over the bar.

51 mins: Livesey sends a header from Kavanagh's corner straight into the arms of Lucas.

53 mins: Vincent Pericard holds the ball up on the edge of the area before laying into the path of Robson. The wide man strikes first time but his shot is well stopped by Lucas.

61 mins: Carlisle's defence fail to deal with a McGovern corner. Scott Cuthbert stabs the ball goalwards from close range but fails to test Pidgeley.

63 mins: Anthony McNamee is fed by Douglas in a central position, jinks inside and out of his marker before striking a right-footed shot which Pidgeley acrobatically keeps out.

73 mins: Harte curls in a direct free-kick and it appears to be heading for the near corner, but strikes the post and stays out.

75 mins: Pericard connects with Harte's cross but his header lacks power and is easy for Lucas.

86 mins: Livesey's weak defensive header is seized upon by sub Alex Revell. The front man is six yards out with just the keeper to beat but opts for power and somehow blazes at least 10 yards over the bar.

It was a great chance to put this game to bed.

Rubbish, absolute waste of time & only 1-0 v a team at the bottom of the water polo league...!! :-)
Can't believe that anyone was being negative about Charlie being good enough....well outside of the '2 or 3' usual suspect names we all know.
Tuesday is a BIG BIG match as we know, but night games are always better for us - As Huddersfield will have a good support down (I've got 4 of them sat with me, so I'll need to shout a bit louder)...I'd bet on it being a great atmoshphere.
We'll also need a win to keep pace with the top 8 teams looking at the other games that night.

Not bashing or being negative as I think Austin is going to be good for us. However 1 goal does not a season make. Revell and Hutch were amazing at Brentford and people were thinking we had a strike partnership.
Let him start again on tuesday and with any luck he can grab another.

It`s obvious that a great spirit exists within the squad and that has to be credited to Danny and Peter. The striking problems seem to be in the process of solution and we have everything to look forward to at the CG with the exception of the lousy half-time cuppa ! I was one who siad he was not ready and I stand by that!

Primarily as that comment was made about 6 weeks ago - prior to training with the first team for that entire period, playing 3 reserve team games, 1 Premier Shield game and making 3 sub appearances at first team level - all of which have added to his fitness levels and learning how we operate compared to Poole Town.

Finally his full debut came at Carlisle not Norwich - which would have seen a completely different outcome.

I'm glad for him and STFC but I think DW has done the right thing in delaying him until today.

I see no reason why Charlie and Billy shouldn`t make Tuesday`s starting eleven and wild horses wouldn`t keep me away from the CG after 19.30 ! A striker`s job is to convert half-chances into goals and Billy`s assists will be vital during the coming weeks. The Hudds will be a very different proposition as compared to Carlisle but I`m expecting Charlie to be more composed and alert to quick thinking defenders. I know the Town need to score more goals but I dont want to see Charlie or Billy displaced by loanees at present. Do you ?

That's more like it GRG...but I do understand the sentiment as Hutch doesn't make the effort....talking to my mates at Celtic, a few of them weren't surprised when I said how lazy he was as they'd seen him in the reserves, of the others most said they were disappointed as first team football fitness was what he wanted...if he stops smoking and drinking so much he might make the most of his fortunate position in life.
I think Revell has something, but needs some confidence through a few goals, he also works hard and creates opportunities.

Hi London Red, as avo says, you're a reliable sensible poster, and many of us were wondering if his fitness levels were up to a start just yet, but as per all the other appearances his effort is incredible, and there was never any doubt of him being good enough for this level.
We have a huge task Tuesday as Huddersfield attack and shoot for fun - it will be a true test of our defence to date....we alsways save our best for the better opposition so given a HUGE vocal support on Tues we should have a game to remember!!

How are you umpcah my friend, my sentiments too totally agree with you. Loans are OK to help a club along but the reality is with development of the contracted players and they should have preference as long as they are fit and playing well. Austins's development I feel is crucial and we could have unearthed a real gem. Bang on with the strikers ethic that there is one at least you want to do the Coxy, Alan Mayes, Peter Noble role and that's be a fox in the box and just bang those goals in. From what I heard Saturday and see at the Norwich game Charlie has much more about his game than just his goals and he works hard for the team and as Danny said on his interview he ran his socks off. I will be there on Tuesday and we need a healthy crowd to raise the roof for this club as they are definitely heading in the right direction. Please turn out fans and lets make some noise and create some atmosphere and sing our hearts out. Come on you reds.

Whether they start on Tuesday or not depends on if we land our two new loanees and who they are!

DW thinks they are very highly rated and if identitied were revealed other would try and get them!

Meaning they may come straight in - so from Ausitn's point of view it was a great time to score to try force his name to remain on the team sheet and have Paynter battle it out with the loanee

Think that miss from Revell (haven't seen it yet but sounds awful) may be the nail in his coffin - yes he seems a great lad and works his socks off - but his strike ratio is just not good enough - we have Billy and Peacks who will put a shift in so need more deadly scorers to complement them.

Austin looks like being one - now we just need another!

Players I would like are:
Pitman - Bournemouth
Barnard - Southend
Akinfenwa - Northampton
Kedwell - AFC Wimbledon

First 2 I agree with, though don't think there is a hope in hell of Barnard.
Akinfenwa didn't impress me either time last year. Just looked fat. Don't know about the last one. Never heard of him.
Simon Church would be good but I think he's actually playing for Reading now.

Does anyone know what hal robson kanus up to. he was a goal scoring winger last season, might be a good loan signing

London Red, says...
2:03pm Sun 22 Nov 09

Southend are not out of the water yet - just because they managed to clear the Tax bill doesn't mean they are not at risk.

Why else would they have loaned out Revell and had to kick out other loanees due to lack of finances!

So they maybe tempted to cash in - just like we have and others have in the past!

Maybe the Morisson deal is a sweetner - i.e. hes gone and we still pay his wages.

Akinfenwa may be big - but he has a knack of finding the net - 7 in 13 the year we turned him down follwed by 15 in 31 starts for a poor Northampton last season and 6 in 11 this year! I take those goals now.

Kedwell is AFC's leading scorer who has netted 12 this season and living in the area I read a few bits and bobs about them in the local free paper and he is highly rated by them.

Tite_Fitt, on holiday says...
2:29pm Sun 22 Nov 09

Akinfenwa would be a good signing, but what makes you think Northampton would be prepared to let him go? As for Barnard, Southend might be prepared to do a deal, but would he want to join us, especially if Championship clubs are interested?

Personally I can't see either player joining us on loan, however, it's poss we could sign either/both in the Jan transfer window IF we were prepared to part with some cash+player exchange.

What will let NTFC let him go - cash simple as that.

For about 90% of the L1 and L2 clubs if an offer comes in they pretty much have to accept it - until AF and Co turned up we were one of them.

NTFC went down and that will have hit their gate receipts, merchansising, match day expecditure i.e food and probably sponsorship - while their costs have likley remained fairly static.

They will therefore, need to balance the books as they don't have a rich benefator - selling a player is usually the way to do it.

Are CCC sides really interested in Barnard?

I personally wouldn't be if we were in the CCC - he has only just started to score goals after knocking around for a few years - so a sudden step could see him fail. A certain Rory Fallon springs to mind here!

His best bet is to move to a more established and secure L1 side and show he is not a one season wonder - ala Lambert.

Considering we are knocking on the POs and have strengthend with the likes of Greer and Douglas - I would put us in that group of 8 sides he should consider - and some of them ala Leeds and Norwich will not want him meaning we should be an attractive option.
