Wootton Bassett A consolidated their lead at the top of Wilts & NE Somerset Division 2 by beating Chippenham C 4-1 at the Lime Kiln.
The home side went straight on the attack, dominating the opening encounters.
Their attacking intent paid off after two minutes when Luke Salisbury found himself free in the D. He turned and lifted the ball into the roof of the net to put his side 1-0 up.
Chippenham responded quickly when a misplaced pass found a visiting player and he levelled matters at 1-1.
Their confidence high, Chippenham pushed Bassett back deep into their own half but were shut out by the home side’s defence.
Bassett hit their opponents on the counter-attack and Salisbury found the unmarked Jake Nunns for an easy goal.
As half time approached, Bassett extended the advantage further with a sweetly taken reverse hit from Matt Daniell.
Chippenham launched wave after wave of attacks after the break, but Bassett’s back-line of Trevor Cappon and Dave Gardner were in imperious defensive form.
As the half wore on, Bassett put the result beyond doubt when a breakaway found Nunns, who hammered into the bottom left corner.
Bassett firsts had been due to play Old Bristolians but the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Emma Collison and Sarah Price both went close early on before goalkeeper Jody Langford pulled off a great save to keep the scores level.
Bassett finally got the goal they deserved when Nattie Moore’s cross was met by Suzanne Montgomery.
The visitors were frustrated again in front of goal in the second half, as goalkeeper Langford and Tegan Buchanan pulled off goal-line clearances to cling to the lead.
Montgomery went close to scoring a second while Bassett had Zara Salisbury to thank for preserving their lead after a superb goal-line clearance at the death.
