FULL TIME: Town 2 Huddersfield 1

CHARLIE Austin's second goal in as many games sealed a massive three points for Town tonight as they beat Huddersfield 2-1 at the County Ground.

The 20-year-old, making his full home debut, raced on to Lecsinel Jean-Francois' pass on 58 minutes and made no mistake with a clinical finish.

Earlier, Billy Paynter had put Swindon in front, only for Lee Novak to level things up for the visitors minutes later.

Alex Revell could have made the scoreline even more emphatic when he flashed a header wide, but in difficult conditions and against a promotion-chasing side who had won their last five games, this was an impressive victory.

On two minutes Jordan Rhodes struck an effort from distance, but it was easy for Town keeper David Lucas.

The home side who should have opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Charlie Austin's high, hanging cross was touched forward by Simon Ferry, and fell for the unmarked Anthony McNamee eight yards out.

The wide man swung a left boot at it, but failed to connect and it bobbled tamely towards goal for Alex Smithies to collect.

But in the 24th minute, and with little notice of intent at either end, the deadlock was suddenly broken by Paynter.

The front man headed down for Charlie Austin and when the youngster gave it back to his strike partner, Paynter made no mistake with a cool finish slipped under the body of Smithies.

Four minutes later, however, Huddersfield were back on level terms and in stunning fashion.

Lee Novak picked up the ball 25 yards out towards the right hand side, and with seemingly nothing on crashed a fantastic strike into the far corner with Lucas helpless.

With the swirling wind in their faces, Swindon spent most of the half unable to really get on the front foot, and limited the visitors to long range efforts, with both Novak and Antony Kay driving wide of the upright.

Huddersfield started the second half brightly and four minutes in captain Peter Clarke rattled a 25-yard shot against the bar after Lee Peltier had swung the ball in from deep on the right.

The wind was continuing to cause havoc and a shank from Kay almost on the halfway line saw the ball fly back down the other end for a Town corner.

Jon-Paul McGovern's delivery was inch perfect, but Paynter was unable to provide the finishing touch from a couple of yards when a second Swindon goal would have surely followed.

But it did follow in the 58th minute, and stemmed from Lecsinel Jean-Francois comin away with the ball from a crunching tackle on Anthony Pilkington right in front of the dug-outs.

The full-back strode forward before before clipping a pass into the unmarked Austin on the edge of the penalty area.

And from that point there only ever looked to be one outcome as Austin took a touch, held off the challenge of his marker and drilled the ball past Smithies from a tight angle.

The goalscorer was replaced minutes later by Alex Revell after going down with cramp, and his replacement almost extended Swindon's advantage even further.

McGovern fizzed in another wicked corner and Revell's flicked header across goal flew agonisingly the wrong side of the upright.

When Theo Robinson was introduced as part of a double change by visiting manager Lee Clark, the County Ground faithful made it perfectly clear what they thought of the striker who made a U-turn on a summer move to Wiltshire in favour of Huddersfield.

And if Robinson was in any doubt about their feelings towards him, they spelt it out as he wellied a shot over the top of the Town End.

That was about as good as it got for the visitors, as Swindon looked in little danger of letting their lead slip.

Great result against a good Huddersfield team. Ferry was awesome, we have to try to buy him if we can.

Austin looks superb, a proper goal scorer with natural ability. He linked up fine with the team. I disagree though, he wouldn't have been ready straight away. The club have done the right thing with him and slowly eased him into the team.

Lucas played well too and showed their goalie how to kick a ball.

Poor support though from us. We should be getting bigger crowds than this.

The number of fans may have been low. But the atmosphere was pretty good.

Wonder Strike, I'm afraid that I have a few Celtic fans who are all big admirers of Ferry and cant see him being sold but according to AF on the radio there's a verbal agreement between us, the player and celtic to keep him for the rest of the season so lets hope that this holds up unlike the robinson fiasco! And you're completely right about the support but hopefully more and more fans will turn up in due course if we keep playing like that!
Keep feet on the grounds lads and while it's AMAZING to finally have some positivity on this forum we have to keep it going!!
IN DW AND AF WE TRUST!!

What a debut for Charlie boy and what a find. Danny you have pulled of the master stroke of the season in Austin and he is coming along nicely. Boy when he gets even fitter he will be awesome. Some great performances out there tonight especially Ferry and Douglas but all played very very well and Lucas showed great handling. Biggest disappointment was McNamee who had a stinker and never got into the game too lazy by half. We actually look a good outfit and the pair upfront are forming a great partnership. Robinson got his just rewards with a load of stick and a defeat to shove up his nostrils. Well done Town shame Austin is cup-tied next game.

Great to hear such positive comments for a change. I wonder where the guys are who slate the board, manager and players most of the time? Sure they will be back when Charlie has a game without scoring or we have ONE bad game!! So proud of the lads, best team and squad we have had for years. Be good to let hutch go and get a classy forward. I hope Sean Morrison comes back as he is a class defender who has improved big time. Sean, like a few others are the future for us. Just got back from the game & very happy. I thought Ferry was superb & really glad that we could be keeping him until the end of the season. Huddersfield are a good side but 1-1 half time felt comfortable. Great goal by Charlie Austin. He can only get better as well. The conditions were terrible but I must say that Billy had a great game as well. He chased everything. Well done the Town & well done the supporters. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. What a diference from last season. We are looking a very good side & with a couple of new players coming in I cannot wait until the next home game. Proud again to be a Town fan. Well done Danny & the board.

I agree, I have no doubt that Austin will score a min of 15 goals this season and I'm sure bigger clubs are already know about him, and with 15 goals in what 25 games left roughly the sniffs will only get bigger. Needs to sign for longer.

Agree with the comments on Austin. Undoubtedly a great prospect and the Club are bringing him on in the right way.

Can't agree with the comment on the poor gate though. 6,700 isn't bad on a foul November evening when there's euro football on TV and fans are counting the pennies before Christmas.

A geat game given the conditions and a massive result. The team are playing like a good unit now and there were some great individual performances. Well done lads!

Technically he isnt ready.....he's been subbed off in both games! Imagine how dangerous he'll be when he's adjusted to the fitness levels of league 1!

Went last night and was well plesaed with the effort the lads put in. One observation though. I (and the many people sat around me) thought Macca was struggling the whole game. His positional play, inability to stay wide to provide width and crosses is worrying. At times, he looked lightewight, lost and out of his depth. Shame that, I quite like the lad when he's on song - unfortunately that doesn't happen too often. If we can offload him for a fee whenever it is the transfer window is open, then we should do so.
On the whole a great win even if the wind made the game a bit of a lottery. Still, it was the same for both sides.

BTW, thought Douglas and Ferry were awesome. Esp. Douglas who provided a much needed stop-gap in front of the centrebacks. The amount of times he 'tidied things up' was amazing.

You Redz!

I agree with the comments about Ferry and Douglas, they are looking solid and is it just co-incidence since Douglas has been back from his ban that results and performances have turned for the better?? Have to say fair play to DW on the way he has nurtered Charlie, seems to be paying off so far, lets hope they have the same attitude and work rate saturday so we dont slip up at Wrexham

Great game, great win. Well pleased for Charlie, he took his goal brilliantly. Agreed with MOTM verdict but thought Douglas was usual awesome self and Cuthbert and Greer were outstanding. Only sour note was Macnamee seeming a little lost at times and struggling to get in the game.
Bit disappointed with the crowd but as commented on above we were going to struggle to win over the arm chair fans what with the poor weather and Euro football on. Also, other than the Southampton game, the home performances haven't always been as exciting as last night and this may account for a lower than expected attendance. Hopefully this result and performance will bring a few of the 'floaters' back.

I posted something similar on the BBC 606 thread.
Credit where credit is due, I feel that there were two unsung heroes from last night's performance. All of the Town players (except McNamee) played well.
For me , the difference between the two sides was that Amankwah & Jean-Francois, were just so much better than their opposite numbers.
Not sure if I was watching the same game as Lee Clark, who so very cliché with the old chestnut about poor defending (yawn). The game I watched had 3 good goals in it with (arguably) Novak's being the best of the three.
What Swindon were, quite astutely, doing was to try to stop delivery into the box. Huddersfield didn't seem to cotton on to that quite so well. Our two 'fullbacks' (Amankwah & Jean-Francois) were so much better than theirs and gave Swindon the edge.
The pair of them, not only defended well, but also linked up with the attack whenever the opportunity presented itself.
If McNamee had turned yesterday (instead of sending his sister), the scoreline would have been far more emphatic.

Work the third one out:
1) My view - awful conditions, great commitment and a great result - spot on Moneaux, they played a blinder, plus Paynter and Austin is a real partnership that gives confidence throughout the team, even Revell looked so much better last night....As an ex-goalie, all credit to Lucas as well, horrid conditions but safe hands!!
2) Huddersfield fans (we were sat with 5 around us), they thought our defence was a mean as fcuk (their words), and thought we looked better in most departments.
3) female receptionist at local hotel I stayed at overnight...said - even as a season ticket holder I didn't go as the weather was so bad, but I know you're wrong (when I said it was an entertaining night), because my husband told me it was a rubbish game and that the highlight was the weather....!!!????..
.I'm sure her husband must be the miserable old s%d who sits behind us in the Arkells stand and moans from the first minute - why do they bother buying season ticket!!??
Well done Town...we have arrived in the play-off hunt, and the next 5 home games should all be winnable!
