On target again - but no goal target for Billy

BILLY Paynter may be in the richest scoring vein of his life, but the striker refuses to set targets of personal milestones, preferring to enjoy the feeling of being part of a successful team.

Paynter scored twice last night as Town beat Oldham Athletic 4-2 at the County Ground, taking his seasonal tally to 19.

But the Scouser did not want to comment on his approaching the sought-after 20-goal season, preferring to pay tribute to his teammates and manager Danny Wilson.

“I’ve never really set myself targets,” he said. “I just go out on the pitch and look to score and it’s worked this season.

“The gaffer’s put me up front and it’s all going nicely.

“I’ve got a good partnership with Charlie (Austin) and we’re both scoring goals which is good for the side.

“And we’ve got the experience and power of Vince (Pericard) coming on to help us out as well.”

That connection with Austin continued its prosperous streak last night, as the former Poole Town man also found the back of the net to further his return to 11 this campaign.

It is in stark contrast to the opening weeks of the season, when fans were bemoaning the lack of clinical finishing in front of goal, and Paynter was thrust into the fore to solve the scoring crisis.

“People questioned where the goals were going to come from and someone had to step up,” said the hitman.

“I was the only fit striker at the time and I felt confident in myself that I could get the goals.

“Whereas last season I was playing a lot deeper in service for Coxy (Simon Cox), this year the gaffer’s told me to push on up and play higher up the pitch and it’s paid off.

“Now I’m confident, I’m scoring goals and I feel as though I can continue.”

The man is on fire. The first goal last night was in the words of harry redknapp 'triffic'.

I always remember Billy trying something like that at Barnet away a couple of seasons ago and nearly killing someone in the stand behind the goal.

Good to see the man on fire and long may it continue.

Lovely goal last night, Billy and a cool penalty. Walsall away seems a lifetime ago.

Stunning strike and good penalty take too Billy is at the top of his game and great to see the partnership blossom again. These games have a habit of being scrappy affairs but Tribute to Oldham who never stopped and played very well and were better than us first half yet we went in 2-0 up. Slight downer was Smith should have done better with both late goals especially the second. Good result from Town and Ward was MOM he was fantastic and scared the Cr*p out of their defence.

BP’s playing out of his skin at the mo! We look really sound up front these days with Paynter, Austin, Ward and Pericard to choose from. Bit worried about Phil the “Spill” though. Despite our new goalkeeping coach he ain’t a lot better than last season. If Lucas isn’t fit for Saturday maybe Danny should risk the Polish guy in goal, can’t be any worse than Smithy.

On another note, any news on loan signings? If Portsmouth get wound up today, would we still be able to sign Matt Ritchie I wonder? I assume all the players at Pompey would become free agents if the club were wound up. So would be free to join another club because no transfer would be involved.

What a goal by Billy..... and decent pen, Charlie and Ward took theirs well, ward was outstanding last night...

SMITH - I have stuck up for him all week, but sooooo dodgy on crosses give the polish lad a chance on Sat IMO..... But again two goals conceded in the last ten mins WTF !!!

Billy keeps slotting the penalties away. When did he last miss one?

Walsall away in September. He scored one in that game too.

The improvement this guy has shown over the last couple of years is amazing, he's just getting better and better. He's starting to build a great rapport with us supporters and hopefully his new contract will be signed in the near future so he can focus solely on cementing our place in the play-offs. We're on the up!

......he's here all week.
Top-class again, Billy-Boy. Your first was one to remember, and we needed something out-of-the-blue like that to get us going, because there was absolutely nothing happening for us for 40 minutes.
That first goal is so important as it can completely change a game, & last night was the perfect example of that.
I'm not particularly worried about his new contract as they usually take ages to agree. Probably just a matter of when they meet in the middle.

Not the best performance from Town in the 1st half last night until a screamer from the legend set us on our way. The man's confidence and self belief has gotta be sky high at the moment and long may this continue along with the brilliant partnership he has formed with Charlie who also deserves lots of praise and credit for his contribution in his 1st season as a pro. I've always admired Billy mainly because of his work rate and he really does deserve all the plaudits that he's getting this season. He's a really nice guy off the pitch too! On to Huddersfield now and i think if Town can get a result there with 2 more home games to follow which they 'should' win then i really do believe this could be our season. RED ARMY RED ARMY!
