BILLY Paynter may be in the richest scoring vein of his life, but the striker refuses to set targets of personal milestones, preferring to enjoy the feeling of being part of a successful team.
Paynter scored twice last night as Town beat Oldham Athletic 4-2 at the County Ground, taking his seasonal tally to 19.
But the Scouser did not want to comment on his approaching the sought-after 20-goal season, preferring to pay tribute to his teammates and manager Danny Wilson.
“I’ve never really set myself targets,” he said. “I just go out on the pitch and look to score and it’s worked this season.
“The gaffer’s put me up front and it’s all going nicely.
“I’ve got a good partnership with Charlie (Austin) and we’re both scoring goals which is good for the side.
“And we’ve got the experience and power of Vince (Pericard) coming on to help us out as well.”
That connection with Austin continued its prosperous streak last night, as the former Poole Town man also found the back of the net to further his return to 11 this campaign.
It is in stark contrast to the opening weeks of the season, when fans were bemoaning the lack of clinical finishing in front of goal, and Paynter was thrust into the fore to solve the scoring crisis.
“People questioned where the goals were going to come from and someone had to step up,” said the hitman.
“I was the only fit striker at the time and I felt confident in myself that I could get the goals.
“Whereas last season I was playing a lot deeper in service for Coxy (Simon Cox), this year the gaffer’s told me to push on up and play higher up the pitch and it’s paid off.
“Now I’m confident, I’m scoring goals and I feel as though I can continue.”
