SWINDON TOWN: Wilson axe threat

A FURIOUS Danny Wilson has warned his Town players he will not hesitate to wield the axe if they continue to gift opponents goals.

Swindon slumped to consecutive League One defeats when they went down 2-1 at Milton Keynes Dons last night, handing the hosts both their goals on a plate.

Aaron Wilbraham’s opener after just 65 seconds came when Sean Morrison was robbed of possession inside his own half, before an unmarked James Tunnicliffe was left with a simple header to double Dons’ advantage midway through the first period.

Although Danny Ward, pulled back an injury-time consolation for Town, boss Wilson ripped into his players for their defensive lapses and promised that if they don’t tighten up then they will be shipped out.

“You cannot give goals away as cheaply as we did tonight and expect to get something from the game,” he fumed.

“To start a game in the manner that we did – so loose and pretty-pretty – you’re going to concede goals.

“The players weren’t ready for the game, simple as that. We had talked about it, worked on it, talked about it again I don’t know how many times before the game.

“Then the ball comes first time to us at the back, we hesitate and try to play out.

“Just put the ball back in where it should be and put the pressure on. We didn’t, and that cost us a goal.

“Then we don’t pick up from a corner.

“The boy makes a run, it’s not important enough so we don’t go with him and he’s got an easy header.

“We drill it into them again, again and again, and that’s all we can do.

“And the bottom line is that if they don’t react to it then we’ll make personnel changes “We made a good fist of it in the second half, but were chasing the game. We’ve suffered because we gave two stupid goals away.”

No point in threatening to ship players out Danny because it doesn't look like we can ship them in!

Nothing happened up front until Charlie came on. Ok, Greer looked a bit tired after the game on Saturday but has been Mr consistancy.

March was always going to be make or break for us. Sort it out before Brighton!

Maybe strengthening the squad might be a good idea. Still waiting!!
Seriously though, we have seen the cracks emerging for a while now and swapping Greer and Austin for Morrison and Pericard maybe wasn't the best option last night.
The Gaffer needs to stand up and be counted on this subject, cos the players are tired and most also know that their positions are pretty safe as the depth of squad is poor. I find it difficult to blame the players and believe that the Board and Danny have to shoulder some responsibility. The lack of real depth in the important positions is costing us right now.

I can't understand how the players get tired, especially the younger lads. All they do is play football, train, play football, have sex, train, play football. These guys are pro footballers. IMO 2 games a week should not pose a problem. Greer is not exactly a dynamo on the pitch, he's tired! I'm not talking about swindon alone, pro footballers in general. If I didn't have a real job working 70+ hours a week I would gladly swap it for lots of sex, football and training. Pull ur socks up town!

We are 6th and still in with a shot of the playoffs. I'm happy with that though clearly we have to get back on it. I can sort of see why Austin was rested. But resting Greer left us with an inexperienced central pairing and I can't fathom out the reasoning. Still Dann'y done alright so far. And we've lost 2 in a row before this season. So lets forget it nad kick on at a tough game in Brighton. In fact all our games are looking tough until after easter!

Squad needs to have some of these new faces on loan. Where are they? Surely the board can bankrole a couple of Loan signings til the end of the season? Is it that Danny is being to picky? The Guy is a great manager but as people have said clubs all around us are bolstering their squads while we have only added one extra player! I still think we can make the play-offs but we need at least two loanees in before Norwich. Anyone heard anything?

in my opinion, Greer has been looking like he has needed a rest for a while now so i think it was a good idea to bring in a fresh face there. Also i think that the fact we had gone two games without scoring a goal suggested that the two upfront just needed a kick up the back side so one got left out. i can only hope that they come out of the blocks quick against Brighton because that will be no easy game. They have done very well against the big teams in this division so usually i would say we would have done well to get a draw but after successive losses i think we now need a win.

I was at the game last night and yes we gifted them their goals which was very disappointing. Saying that we hit the woodwork 3 times so could have like saturday come away with a result if we took our chances. Maybe luck is not on our side at the moment but whilst there is still 12 games to play things are ot all doom and gloom like a certain section of fans seem to think going by the abuse they were dishing out last night. Lets get behind the team we are still in the top 6 and looking at the remaining fixtures for all the teams up there anything is still possible. These players have been fantastic all season and i'm sure this is only a temporary blip. Confidence maybe low at present but i'm sure Danny will get the lads buzzing in time for Brighton and Southampton. Then it's Norwich at home. All to play for so come on u reds!

To lose 2-1 away to M.K.Dons is not surprising or embarrassing, especially as Lady Luck seems to have deserted us by hitting the woodwork three times.
The real damage was done last Saturday against a fairly mediocre Bristol Rovers team, that had failed to score one single goal in seven away games.
We certainly have a very difficult programme ahead of us in the next three matches, and I doubt if we will collect many points.
However, I do think that Danny and his team will pull it around after this, and that we just might sneak into 6th place at the end of the season.

Our next realistic chance of 3 points is Tranmere at home on 8th April. If we can pick up the odd scrappy point between then and now we will be ok and still in with a chance of the play offs.

Well we've had this coming for a while, from the start of the season we had alot of draws because Cox was not adequately replaced to support Paynter, I think we waited about 3 months into the season before something was done about it. We got lucky with Austen stepping up to the plate, because without him we would not have won as many as we have. Now we have been waiting since January 1st (10 weeks), to bolster the squad and apart from Ritchie coming in (who has had very little impact), nothing has happened. We have a couple of squad players in Timlin, Easton and Morrisson that can step in to full a gap when necessary, but we have no one on the bench that can change a game. From what I have seen of Pericard, he is not fit, too slow or both, so much for his promise of 15 goals. A right back, an experienced midfielder who can score a goal or two and another striker capable of changing a game coming off the bench are a must. At this rate March will be over and the damage to our play-off hopes will be done if something isn't done. Is there a reason we don't know about why we don't get players in other than clubs don't want to release the players we have targeted. Question is how do the other teams manage to pull it off.

Can't believe all the panic and constant moaning over loan players. Yes we need them but as Danny has said on more than one occasion he has had deals scuppered at the last minute and one of them was Stockports Mullins who got injured when Danny was almost there. Matt Ritchie could not come when Danny wanted him due to Pompey needing him as cover. Don't fret that Danny is trying all he can but he has his list and will not just take anyone who will not make a difference. I bet he could have bought any tom dick or harry in and would have got slated for bringing in rubbish. Obrien and Pericard could be in that catagory as fans are critical already of these two so don't you think Danny is walking a fine line with players. To me the strain is showing on the whole team and we have to try and come through it and just hope like some other poster said the other day that we have not been punching above our weight and now we are getting found out. Still a good season in my book and very unexpected after last season so come on guys keep the faith and at least stick together!!! are we not all in this together, teamwork is fans included.

C'mon people, get real, this team is not good enough for the play-offs.
A few weeks ago Wilson was stating that his defence couldn't hold out for 90mins as they were leaking late goals. Now the Manager is moaning that his defence has become slow out of the blocks at the start of games. This guy, who some fans regard as some sort of God at CG cant even entice any new recruits to the club. Is there a problem that we dont know about ? Forget about promotion and look forward to playing Plymouth/Sheff. Wed/Palace next season and maybe more success. As for our next three games,Brighton,Soton and Norwich three points is about all we can hope for.

My word what a negative post!

So we couldn't realistically win on Saturday? Brighton aren't that great at home this season, the lads have a point to prove now so anything could happen.

Every team in this division is beatable! Show some believe in the players who have got us into the play off position we currently find ourselves in.

So we lost 2 games, and yes we may not be good enough for play offs why???
as a post said we leaked so so many soft goals, also agree Cox was not replaced and the goals were not there until Charlie Austin Arrived.DW has been say we are looking for additions to the squad, my ggod other teams appear at ease to get in reasonable players.it's not as if these loan guys are coming for 2 years , maybe 2 months. No in this instance DW has set his heights way to high, granted he is the one who is the Boss.
As to Charlie Austin, how well this young player has adapted to Div 1, I read some BS aafter Sat game, all I gotta say is we were all 20 years old at one time or another, ok he might be strutting round the Town etc ok he is young and in my book enjoy his football and life while he can.
So DW get searching as the deadline is falling.
As said we lost the last 2 games is not the end of the world, however play offs just dont know, would be nice.
Good luck at Brighton

To me, I think it's fairly obvious why we seem unable to buy or get players on loan when other clubs seem to have no trouble getting them.

I believe that Fitton & the Board have set up a firm wage structure which they have set out to maintain at all costs, and to keep within their budget. Unlike previous Town regimes who spent way beyond their means, Fitton & Co are trying to keep Town on an even keel, and I'm sure we all applaud them for doing so.

The downside of course, is that it becomes almost impossible to entice any decent players who may be getting Championship wages, or higher, as other clubs may be prepared to go broke to get them.

This gives the Town Board a dilemma - do they break their wage structure and risk discontent among the existing players and a possible financial noose around the club's neck if we go up and then immediately come back down, saddled with the higher wage bills to find - or keep the Town on an even keel but miss out on the chance of promotion?

The majority of clubs go for broke, and that's exactly what most of them find themselves as, eventually. Much as I hate to see it, I think prudence must win out here, and hope to make a stronger challenge next year.

However, even if the Board decide to stick to their wage structure, we cannot expect to make any progress or have any hopes of promotion next year unless more supporters come to the CG and continue to support the club through thick and thin. There just will never be enough money coming into the club to afford better players.

If we want promotion we must back the club and players to the hilt. The boo boys should stay away, only maximum and continued support will see us through.

Whatever the Board decide, we must back their judgement, which so far has only erred with the muppet Malpas. I would not like to be in their shoes to make the decision either way, it's a "Catch 22."

Just my opinion.

Not the end of our season by any means, it does however end any chance we had of automatic promotion.Need to dig really deep now, IMO Brighton is a must win game, but this is the Town so would not be the least bit surprised to see us win .Really need to get a player or two in urgently. All is not lost yet.

Dover Red says...

If we want new players in we need to get more support through the gate to raise the money to pay for them, why should the board have to fund everything all the time? they have done more than enough in that department. When we can only get just over 10000 for a local derby home game when we are doing so well is very poor, guess we need to play Leeds every home game !

Great post.....

How quick people forget where we have come from, this team is good enough for the playoffs, look at all the teams above us and none of them have caused us massive problems, two games on the bounce yeah so what, we could now go on another unbeaten run of 13 games, wake up people we have a good club financialy sound with some very good players, IMO this is the best team we have had here for ages, years and years.... what we dont need is all this negativity, if we had said after narrowly avoiding relegation last year that we would progress to the top 10 I am sure most of us would have taken that... Yet here we are in with a shout of the playoffs.... come on... get your cheap season tickets and get behind the club, this is a blip, all teams have one...

I understand your concerns about more support through the gate, but Saturday was an exception for two reasons.
Firstly, the Swindon Police can't seem to cope with a 3.00 p.m. Kick-Off, although the Bristol Police can.
And secondly, you could not blame Swindon Town fans, for the extremely poor following by Bristol Rovers fans of only 1,400.

If Danny does want to tinker with the team, maybe he should consider playing Ward upfront alongside Austin OR Paynter and play Ritchie on the wing. Only 1 goal in 3 games we need to start finding the net again.

However lets take credit for the recent run and again last night with a little luck the 3 shots that struck the wordwork could have gone in on another night.

The point I want to make though is about some of our so called Supporters. The gobby ones who think it is good to get on players backs. To shout to the ref "off off off" when Pericard made a foul and thus actually support a decision to reduce us down to 10 men what is that all about ?

We all have opinions in football and I guess if we pay we are entitled to our opinion and all that.

Agree with most of your post. But I had an awful feeling yesterday that Austin was going to be dropped in favour of Pericard. When I heard the team news my heart sank because I couldn't see it working. I wish I had been proved wrong. Squad rotation is all very well when you can swap players around with confidence. But Pericard had done nothing to suggest that he was a capable replacement for Austin. As you say, we could have won the game last night with our best eleven (including a fit Amankwaah, which seems far from the case at the moment). I believe that side can win at Brighton on Saturday and also get something from the trip to St Mary's on Tuesday. So we are not all doom and gloom merchants just because we have a constructive point to make. I was getting behind the team as much as anyone last night - and I will be on on Saturday and Tuesday. I think that entitles me to my say.

he doesnt seem to understand that at stfc we have a high workrate and will chase down "lost" causes and put defenders under pressure.
for me he just coasts along, he has only looked like scoring for us on two occasions and has not put in the effort other times to create chances for himself or the team.
definetly not a player i rate or like having at town, hes there for himself and not the team.
on a brighter note, got home last night to find a letter from the club which actually recognises that the fans are important to the club.

Can't do midweek games, not even listen to them. Therefore nothing to say about the game. Do want to agree with those who say that getting on a players's back during a game is totally mindless. Also support those who constructively criticise on here, even if I disagree. That's part of being on here. We are still in a great position. Tough games to look forward to. Motivation should not be a problem at all at this stage but if it is, changes should be made. The team has developed very well and we play a style of football that works well 80% of the time. (and its good to watch)When we are losing that style is easy to play against - let us push the ball around knowing it will end up on the flanks. Squeeze and block crosses and if they still come in make sure they are first to the ball or very tight. Win the ball stick it past the centre backs for their lads to run on to. Job done. We need to develop a plan B for a losing situation, 15 mins to go. I'm Still Happy!

I would not like to be in their shoes to make the decision either way, it's a "Catch 22." Just my opinion.
Very good post, you are probably right on much of what you say

Only 1 goal in 3 games we need to start finding the net again.
not a bad suggestion to have Danny up there with Chaz and Billy and try Ritchie as an out and out wingman, but who would you leave out, not Ferry or Johno I hope.

More than a little surprised with Pericard showing little/not enough interest last night.Personally feel that criticism of DW for making changes is misplaced,I for one fully support his decision even though it didn't work out as we all hoped it would.Had expected Pericard in particular to be proving a point with a strong performance.Interest

the only reason i say that is because he has played well at previous clubs until he gets his contract.
done nothing other than win us a pen to prove he's changed

WELL SAID, CNUT!! That is the perfect response to that stinking claptrap. It's a scratch n' sniff posting - go on, give it a scratch and you can smell the bullsh*t.
Dobbo, crawl back behind your stone or go & join the Poxford mongs, who are also miserable after last night :0)

Thanks m8 , sounds like he might be worth a punt, if DW rates him good enough for us that's good enough for me.

Saw him on the box vs Fiorentina & Reading (spits on the floor) - vs La Viola he just looked like a typical youngster making his debut for a great club in the Champs lge, really keen, getting stuck in & bombing on whenever he got the chance. Didn't look ready for it to me, no shame in that & I'm confident that he could really offer us something.
Vs Reading he looked better, more settled & composed. From what I can remember I'm chuffed, & slightly surprised, that we've (hopefully) been able to bring him in.
Manky didn't even look semi-fit to me last night, even before he went down then hobbled for another 5 mins. Then Sheehan had to play right back, class player but didn't really look comfortable on his right side, had to cut inside to use his left foot every time he got the ball. We're clearly desperate for a right back.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If only we all had a crystal-ball. If the 2 changes last night had come off and they had played a blinder the comments on here would be totally different. Trouble is you never know before the game how they are going to play. Roll on saturday.

Fair play if you were jesting, but that still makes you a bit of a bell-end. Talking of "sad person", is every day of your life as empty as today clearly is????
I hear that Bendtner is missing the next game because he broke a nail, & Nasri is also out because he laddered his tights. Good football to watch (which doesn't seem to get you any silverware, btw), but the gayest team there has EVER been.

We may have lost 2 games but some of our fans have to be realistic. Its amazing how its the end of the world because we lost 2 games on the trot. Unreal!!
At the start of last season when a Mr Malpas was in charge we wouldnt have even won 1 game in 6 months let alone having a record of losing 2 games in 15 matches!! Weve had a great season so far, playing the best football in years at at last I actually look forward when I go to watch Swindon play. For about 5 years previously to that i went but the football was crap and it wasnt that entertaining to watch. Yes it would be the icing on the cake to get in the play-offs but then youve still got to win them. Which would be a very hard thing to achieve anyway. Just think how far the club has come in a short period of time! Then everyone would be happy! Some people are never happy unless you win every game you play 5-0. Get real!!

As for Pericard, it's frustrating that he hasn't scored yet, but we need to stick with him. It's pointless getting on his back, what good will that do. Let's face it, if he was good at Carlisle, there's no reason why he can't do a half decent job at Swindon.

Stephen Darby

Liverpool
On July 18, 2006 Liverpool's official site announced that five academy players have been promoted to Melwood, Stephen was one of them. Darby played in Liverpool's FA Youth Cup winning teams in 2006 and 2007 that defeated Manchester City and Manchester United's academies in the finals respectively, captaining the team in the 2006 final. He was first selected for the Liverpool squad which played Turkish side Galatasaray in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in December 2006, but he was an unused substitute in that match. Despite being on the first team bench he didn't forget his roots and after a four-hour flight from Istanbul to Liverpool he went straight to the Hawthorns ground and played a full game including extra-time to help the youth team through to the fourth round.

During 2007-08 season Darby was the captain of Liverpool's reserves team that ended the campaign as northern and national champions. His performances earned him praises from manager Gary Ablett calling him 'Mr. Consistency'.

His first appearance in a competitive match was as a substitute in Liverpool's League Cup fourth round defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in November 2008.

He made his Champions League debut against PSV Eindhoven on 9 December 2008, coming on as a substitute alongside fellow homegrown players Jay Spearing and Martin Kelly.

On July 5 2009, Stephen Darby secured a 3 year extension to his contract along with fellow Melwood graduate Jay Spearing.

He made his first competitive start for Liverpool against ACF Fiorentina in the UEFA Champions League on the 9 December 2009.

His second competitive start came against Reading F.C. in the F.A. Cup. The game finished 1-1. Darby was praised by Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher for his performance in the game.

Darby made his Premier League début against Tottenham Hotspur F.C. on the 20 Jan 2010, coming on as a substitute in the 90th minute for Philipp Degen and had a blinder.

International career
Darby took part in England's squad for UEFA European U19 Championship qualifications in May 2007 and made two appearances alongside Liverpool team-mates Jack Hobbs, Craig Lindfield and Adam Hammill.

I can remember him making his début this season in the Champions League & the Premier League & to say I was impressed with this youngster would be an understatement! He is definitely on for the future, mark my words!! One hell of a coup for our squad!!!

I totally agree with you Keep Fitt. Also disgusted with the 'fans' who got on Pericard's back. Total morons. Pericard is a similar player to Paynter and is it worth noting that the service, ie balls kicked up in the air, will not bring out the best in him. Let's try keeping them to the floor, or chest height at most. Service is very poor to the forwards and I just cannot understand why we have to keep playing the long ball. Tuesday ight was very reminiscent of the start of season (before Austin) when the the forwards couldn't score and the pressure was put on the defence.
