A stinker of a tinker?

DANNY Wilson has rarely played the role of tinkerman since his arrival at Swindon 15 months ago, but the boss admitted he may have got it wrong with his double change at Milton Keynes Dons last night.

Captain Gordon Greer and 13-goal front man Charlie Austin were somewhat surprisingly dropped to the bench as Wilson looked for a response from Saturday’s humiliation at the hands of local rivals Bristol Rovers.

The duo’s replacements, Sean Morrison and Vincent Pericard, did little to impress – with Morrison at fault for Dons’ first goal – and were withdrawn early in the second half for Greer and Austin.

But by then the damage was done, with the hosts two up through Aaron Wilbraham and James Tunnicliffe, and more than happy to sit on their lead.

A stoppage time strike from Danny Ward raised little more than a smile among Town’s band of travelling supporters, for it was too little too late, and Wilson explained his selection decision.

“I keep saying that we’ve got a squad of players who are champing at the bit to play, and with the games coming up in the next few weeks, we will need everybody in peak form,” he told the Advertiser.

“Sean did well when he came in for his last game, and Vince was ready for a game. The two boys who were left out, we thought we would give them a little bit of a breather, because there is a lot of pressure on them all the time as a club captain and centre-forward.

“This is a game we thought we can go and see what we’re made of. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out that way.

“Maybe it was right or wrong to do it. In hindsight, you will turn round and say the result suggests we were possibly wrong. But at the same time I wouldn’t hesitate doing it again because I believe it is the right thing to do.”

If Town’s defensive change was intended to shore them up, it backfired spectacularly as they got off to the worst possible start with 65 seconds on the clock.

Luke Chadwick robbed Sean Morrison, sprinted away from Scott Cuthbert and, although his shot was saved by David Lucas, the loose ball fell straight into the path of Aaron Wilbraham, who tucked into the empty net.

Swindon’s first opportunity came on 10 minutes, when Jonathan Douglas fed Danny Ward and, after a mazy dribble, he forced Dons keeper Willy Gueret into a low save. But the hosts were soon back on top, with Chadwick’s cross finding Mark Carrington unmarked in the middle of the area, but the midfielder somehow failed to test Lucas.

In the 14th minute Town were almost back on level terms. Jon-Paul McGovern’s delivery from the right took a slight deflection off Dean Lewington and fell invitingly for Billy Paynter. The 22-goal top scorer met it on the volley, but saw his 15-yard effort crash against the cross bar and away with Gueret beaten.

The visitors were beginning to have more of the play and Alan Sheehan warmed Gueret’s palms from a free-kick before, straight up the other end, Jermaine Easter fired over having played a neat one-two with Carrington.

But Town were inches away from drawing level on 35 minutes when McGovern’s cross was only half cleared.

Jonathan Douglas, standing just outside the area, flicked the ball up for himself up before striking a low drive which beat Gueret, struck the inside of the upright, rolled back across the goalmouth and somehow stayed out. It was a miss that Swindon were left to rue two minutes later as the Dons doubled their lead.

Peter Leven’s corner was inch-perfect and defender James Tunnicliffe escaped him marker to head firmly past Lucas.

Having twice been denied by the woodwork in the first half, it wasn’t a case of third time lucky right on the stroke of half-time. Ward did well to get to the by-line, and his centre was met by Paynter a couple of yards out.

It seemed to take the striker by surprise, however, and under pressure from David McCracken, he managed to bundle the ball against the post and to safety.

Swindon started the second period brightly in a bid to get back in the game, but it was the Dons who again looked more clinical in the final third, with Mark Randall striking just wide five minutes in.

With 58 minutes played, Wilson took his first two throws of the dice by bringing on axed duo Greer and Austin at the expense of Morrison and Pericard. But they continued to lack the attacking spark and defensive solidity which has summed up their season so far.

Paynter headed wide Sheehan’s free-kick on 74 minutes, but clear cut chances were few and far between despite an abundance of possession.

Randall went close for Dons with a dipping strike from distance, and Lewington headed wide at the far post as they looked to put the contest to bed And the less said about a long range Kevin Amankwaah effort for Swindon with 10 minutes remaining, which troubled the scoreboard more than Gueret, the better.

Ward pulled one back in stoppage time with a rising strike which gave Gueret no chance, but it was Amankwaah’s effort which summed up Town’s night - promising situation, good position, but must do better.

Vincent Pericard has been more than disappointing so far for Swindon Town, and he reminds me of Iffy Onuora on a bad day.
I have some sympathy with Danny for making this unfortunate signing, because he had played very well for Carlisle United in the first half of the season, by scoring goals and not having injury problems.
Perhaps somebody could explain the contrast in form since his arrival here.

Anyone remember how long it took Jan-Aage Fjortoft to start doing the business for us? Not saying VP is anything like Fjortoft but sometimes patience can be rewarded!

In no way can you compare the two. Pericard just wasn't interested last night. Lack of effort, willingness, desire, skill, etc, etc, etc. Fjorfoft tried, even when it was not going his way, Pericard did not try last night.

If you read the Carlisle supporters views after Pericard left them to join us you would be in no doubt this guy is a very good player, Carlisle offered to make him their highest ever paid player so after only 1 full game for people to talk about "this unfortunate signing" is quite simply crazy and ridiculous! I didnt go last night but judging by what our fans who did go said i accept he didnt play well, but then again it sounds as if most of the team were crap as well. I remember Billy went long periods last year without scoring and not playing well and a lot of fans called him Barn door Billy, my point is dont judge Pericard yet and give him more time.

I have been a harsh critic of Pericard recently, but I think it's unfair to accuse him of not trying. He just doesn't look up to the job. Lazaat, I admire your patience but we have just thrown 6 points away. Now is not the time to be experimenting with a player who might come good eventually. The Paynter-Austin partnership is proven. Wilson has a strong belief in David Lucas ("If he's fit, he plays"). Unless Paynter or Austin has a complete mare, which I haven't seen, I think the same should apply to them.

Fjortoft was a legend and don't think he can be compared to Pericard. DW is honest enough to admit he got it wrong. Pericard came here with a good CV but the injury has stalled his abilities somewhat. March was always going to be a bad month and I think the pressure is getting to the players. We are close to being out of the top 6 at the moment but not out of contention come the end of the season. DW keep with the first team and what you instinctively know is right. Doesn't help with some of the fans getting on your back. Did people honestly think we would remain unbeaten until the end of the season ? Loads of time to get it right Danny and I for one am dissapointed but not worried. Keep the faith in DW as he is the man.

say what you want about pericard but history books say he's played well until he gets a contract. Thats why i was unsure as to whether he was a good signing or not

Oh yea of little faith , just check out the fixtures this weekend .
Brighton v Swindon 15.00

Carlisle Utd v Colchester 15.00

Huddersfield v Norwich 15.00

Millwall v Charlton 15.00

Southampton v Leeds

We are still in the mix , I admit watching VP he seems to get the ball caught under him never seems in total control , but he is a handful and when 100% fit will be a handful . Not looking forward to the Brighton game mostly due to the terrible stadium but really looking forward to going to Southampton . bound to be a shock result in March for one of those clubs we have , I would love a draw at Southampton then beat Norwich at hom , we almost did it in the paint pot and we are a much more complete team now than then , so keep the faith , its a marathon not a sprint .

I was at the game last night and theres no doubt about it, Austin and greers omission cost us the result. We still deserved (in my opinion) to get at least a draw out of the game though.
Sean Morrison looked out of his depth at times and had we not have conceded so early on (because of his mistake) then Im sure we would have got something from the game.
Pericard was very disappointing, he just didnt look interested and him and Paynter were just not forming a partnership like we know Austin-Paynter is.
It would have have been more interesting to see Pericard start with Austin instead to see if theres better potential there, as I dont see pericard-paynter working and it didnt.
Although having said this I will not write Pericard off just yet. He could still come good, needs a goal.
Amankwaah looked crap for the most part (he clearly was carrying a knock/or wasnt fit/off form) and I just cannot understand why nathan Thompson is not being picked for the RB slot while amankwaah isnt fully upto it. Amankwaah pulled up with an injury towards the latter end of the 2nd half, and the management looked clueless for a while as to who to replace him with. We should have put the ball out of play immediately and made the change, instead he hobbled around for about 5 minutes! (It looked a bit amateur from our point of view.)
(Could have cost us another goal aswell which would have been game over).
with the fixtures coming up, and having lost these 2 games I was certain we were going win, Im now in doubt to us finishing in the top6, we've certainly got a massive battle on our hands to finish in the top 6, with the likes of millwall, huddersfiel
d and colchester, and last nights defeat will have given dons hope aswell and they certainly cant be written off with the team theyve got.
I also think we need further cover up front aswell, with Danny ward being used very effectively on the wing. we could use a pacy nippy striker to bring on late in the game to play alongside any of the 3 others we've got. (or we could even slot ritchie into left wing and move ward up front with charlie or billy?

It would be just like us to win 2 of the games coming up, that most fans would have us down to lose.

At this stage it is a minor blip in an otherwise outstanding season, there will be plenty of twists and turns from now until the end of the season.

There are very little if any games that mean nothing to a club, whichever end of the table you find yourselves at, and that makes it interesting.

If we now turn round and do over Brighton and Norwich, all will be forgotten for the time being.

I don't predict a happy outcome from gayville, and expect a point at best against norwich, but the players probably have a different view of that and I hpe they go out and prove me wrong.
