Pardew believes Town would treat a draw like a win


SOUTHAMPTON boss Alan Pardew has warned his players to be aware of Town’s spoiling tactics tonight, insisting opposite number Danny Wilson will treat a draw like a victory.

The play-off chasing pair go head to head at the St Mary’s Stadium, with the Saints bidding to close the gap on the top six after starting the season in administration and on minus 10 points.

But Pardew reckons Swindon will head south in search of a point to try and put a halt to their climb up the division.

He said: “We’ve got to put pressure on and we can’t afford a slip up in the next four or five games, that’s for sure. So this has got to be a win for us.

“Swindon are aware of that of course and can protect themselves a little bit, and I think they will and try to maybe have a game plan.

“We need to be on our toes about what will that game plan be to try and stifle us and stop our momentum and try and nick a win or take the draw.

“They know the emphasis is on us and Danny (Wilson) is a wise enough guy to give us a problem.

“A draw for them is a win, it’s as simple as that.”

Pardew believes Town’s squad and Wilson have not received the recognition they fully deserve this season, and is confident they will be taking part in the play-offs come the end of the campaign.

“I like the fact that the manager is consistent, the way he plays, always has been,” said Pardew.

“He’s an underrated manager in my opinion – he’s doing a fantastic job.

“The players are good players and know their roles too. I think they are underrated.

“They’ve been together about 18 months and look a side that will get in the play-offs. I don’t think we’re going to catch Swindon, and we might catch somebody else instead.”

Ordinarily I'd call Pardew a prize male chicken. But a draw would indeed be a very good point, especially given our 'I can't believe it's not an injury crisis' (tm) - DW says having up to 6 players out isn't an injury crisis!.

Danny goes in to every game looking for 3 points and that won't change tonight, however in certain games you would settle for a point and that may be the case tonight. Our injury hit squad isn't ideal for the next to games, I pray that Lucas is available because Smith is very inconsistant. Town play better against the better sides so anything can happen. I'm going to be a bit abitious and say Swindon win 2-1.

After his impressive show on Saturday it seems likely that Marshall will be in the starting eleven tonight. Not so sure that he will last for 90 minutes though ! So much will depend on who we have on the bench i.m.o. Bodin ? Smithy will be busy and hopefully on his best form.

Complete and utter drivel from a complete and utter muppett.

To say "a draw would be a win" might be true if they were playing Stockport. However, we are a side who has been in and around the top six all season and have always gone away from home looking for victory.

Also, Southampton are without doubt the worst team to visit the County Ground this season. If Austin and Paynter had begun their partnership by that time we would have had a cricket score. As it was, it was the most comfortable 1-0 I have ever seen.

Another point to make is that even if Southampton hadn't had a points deduction they still wouldn't be in the play off zone and I think it is unrealistic of them to think of themselves as play off contenders.

With all that said, I would settle for a point tonight, largely because it's our game in hand and would leave a nice 6 point cushion between us and Huddersfield.

But Pardew can wind his neck in and I'd love it if we could make him eat his words.

You clown. Since when has league position been based on goal difference? We have a poor goal difference because on the very few occasions we have been defeated this season, we have lost heavily (apart from the 1-0 at Norwich).

I don't care if Southampton were just out of administration. Leicester got promoted while in administration and Portsmouth have qualified for the FA Cup semi final (I'm sure you don't need reminding of that!).

Southampton have no chance of the play offs this season and I expect Town to get something out of the game tonight, even with our crippling injury list.

Everyone has said that Pardew is a 'muppet' and a 'fool' because he said a draw would be like a win (in other words you would be happy with a point), but then you all more or less agree by saying that a draw would be a good result. What does that make you. Some of the comments on here are a joke.

We were awful when we came to you. Half our team has changed. We had only just come out of admin and had no pre-season. But hey, that's our problem not yours. In same way I wouldn't expect you to blame your 'injuries' when we beat you tonight.

We have won 7 in a row at home, and have only lost 4 in the last 33 (One to a Premiership side). Feel free to take a dig re: Portsmouth. I would do the same, but no one cares enough to be rivals with you. We have not been outside the top 6 form table since November.

Huddersfield arrived at our place, spouting off rubbish about how if we had the 10 points added on etc, we wouldn't be in top 6, and they got turned over.

In short, don't call someone a muppet, and then agree with him, because it makes you look like....well a muppet.

I look forward to you bring well over 3,000 down to our gaff tonight, like we did when we came to watch our reserves lose at the County Groiund.

cant believe im not making tonights game. Why did this one have to get re-scheduled to a tuesday night? So annoying. Me and bro have been on about these games for years. Him being a saints fan and me being Swindon. We were at the game at swindon, but cant make tonight because of work commitments. Very very annoying. Words cant even describe how gutted we are. Come on Swindon 3 lovely points to make that top 2 more of a chance again !!!!!

When all's said and done you are a mid-table third division outfit. We have a far greater chance than you do of being in the Championship next season, regardless of tonight's result.

I’m not sure why Southampton fans are commenting on here, haven’t they got their own local rag website to use? Anyway, back to the point. I fully expect Swindon to win here, and put an end to Southampton’s unrealistic play off hopes. I was there the last time we played them at the Dell and lost 5-1 in 1993. How things have changed since then! If I remember correctly they only had half a stand behind the goal and the other half was a main road.

I'm more worried about Bristol Rovers. They are 5 points better off than Southampton, and smashed them 3-2 at St Mary's earlier this season.
I also believe they are more equipped to deal with the run in to the playoffs, and have more talent than Southampton who just seem to have reached their level now.

Yes there will be plenty of tickets left as most Southampton fans turned their back on the club when they got relegated from the Premiership. You haven’t been anywhere near a trophy since you won the FA cup 34 years ago. In the same time Swindon have won the 4th Division, 3rd Division, 3 play-off promotions and a league cup semi-final.

Oh it upsets me to get dragged into these arguments but can't help it. My view on Saints is that they have a very good side due largely to the fact that they have used a rich owner to harvest the rest of the leagues talent e.g. 4 of their 5 scorers against Hud started the season as top players at other league clubs. They are doing the best to bu their way out of the league. Its a free market, they are entitled to do it but not what I think football should be about. Thats another debate though. They'll almost certainly go up next season but be interesting to see whether they survive with purely league 1 players or whether the owners will have to buy their way out again. As for when we first played them there is no way it was a reserve team. I was sitting with a Saints fan who was gutted at the state of his team and worried for the season. As for your bleating about just coming out of admin not having time to prepare.....thats league 1 for you. The value of your squad should still have beaten us. But it didn't. You need to face facts that with whats been available you,ve had a dreadful season. As for tonight, we can do it depending on what players are available. I'd love to see DW gamble with a few young players. He went with the relatively untested Marshall on Sat who was revelation and played big part in us winning. It'll be tough but if we play to our full ability we can get 3 popints tonight

Pretty poor 'wind up merchant' but hey who cares, I think the pressure is more on them than Swindon, we are possibly expecting a bad result - seems they're not. Our side will be a bit of an unknown quantity even to us - wait and see what happens.
I think Pardew has helped with our team talk too.

Also the team at Swindon had 3 players left from the previous season. and only 5 will appear tonight. If someone puts money into your club, you won't use it to buy better players.

Anyone would think you were sitting in the play-offs sitting 16 points clear of your opponents tonight. I'm not making any excuses, we'll go to your place tonight looking for the win, but you better hope you don't get beaten, as you'll be 19 points from 6th places with only 33 points to play for. You are the same as Leed's fans, think you're too big for the division as you have loads of fans. We have taken plenty of fans to Wembley every time we have been. Lets see if you are so smug come the end of the season.

im actually going to the saints final as my bro is saints fan. Tickets came through last night. Gonna be a big match Vs. eerrrrrr ..... Carlisle. Mouthwatering. Saints have been allocated 3 quarters of the ground (expected to sell out) and Carlisle a quarter (or something like that) wow saints really do like these big opposition games.

My point is that most teams start with very little funds. We lost our best player with little time to prepare and bring cover in. Lots of teams in same boat. As for last time we played, you could put the same argument for us. Only 3 will turn out that played earlier in the season, 5 if whole team was fit. I'm not making excuses. I still think we can beat you today. Even with injuries. Just think that if we didn't have 1 fit striker as well as numerous injuries else where it would be game of far higher quality. And please don't start with the juvenile comments about having fewer fans turn up to games. May well be the case but we're higher up the league and beat you last time we played. You have your fans, we'll have the points.

Dear oh dear, we get 2 (yes only 2 - for such a massive club) visiting supporturds come on here today. spouting what can only be described as 'drivell' at best, and it sparks such a reaction!!

I think the biggest loser in this whole story is Pardew. He was nothing short of deluded both before and after their defeat to us earlier this season, and it appears he has not changed much since.

I personally think we might get hammered tonight, and I thought that prior to our injuries, but could equally see us nick it, as we did on saturday with a patched up team, after a shocking defeat at home to rovers, and and unlucky night at MK, both games we expected to win, now that is what it is like following our 'little' club lol

Our little club that has seen top flight football, european cup victory, league cup winners, 3 times play off winners and other divisional titles, along with 33,000 fans making the trips to wembley, but hey, let 'massive' southampton spout their garbage and their over inflated views about 'where they should be'

As for the comment about goal difference!! What a muppet, can anyone tell me the last team to get promoted from mid table with a big positive goal difference?

Ha ha what a laugh, I love the saints fans they are great !! Deluded but great..... They were a big club and you have to say still are, but being a big club gives you more money better finances and the ability to pay players big wages...
But when you come up against teams with a bit of passion full of players who actualy enjoy playing for their club (and arent there for the wages) then they fall short.
We have come a long way in a short space of time, nearly relegated last year and will be in the playoffs this year, saints are a very good team and have bought some good players, same as huddersfield, but "little " swindon are above them all, even if they beat us 10 nil tonight, wonder how their 33,000 fans feel about that !!!!

Having a large fanbase doesn't entitle you to anything, so you needn't come stamping in here throwing numbers like "33k against Leeds" as if they mean something. Nobody cares about your average gate, they care about your form on the pitch and ability to win games.

Are Southampton on an impressive run of form? Yes, undoubtedly. But so were we until a week ago. All it takes is one bad game, even one bad moment to ruin that. If I were a saints fan, I'd certainly hope that the players were more cautious of the threat posed by other teams than you guys are.

I know you've obviously come here for an argument (why else would you visit another teams forum and make inflamatory comments?) but at least use some valid points.

"blaming the injuries, making excuses already" - is that not what you were doing earlier with regard to having just come out of administration when you last played us?

"we got to play premiership sides in both cups" - aside from the fact that getting drawn against a premiership side is blind luck, so did we.

I could go on but I beleive the phrase on the Internet is "don't feed the trolls", and I've already done that far too much.

r surely it says more about our support that we are playing a smaller club,it's easy to sell out against a man united but not a carlisle which we have done quite well me thinks!

If Pardew truly believes what he says then he's even more of a plank than I thought. He really isn't a very bright bloke.

A draw would be a good result for both teams - Saints aren't in the playoff race in any case.

I reckon we'll win it 2-1 but fairly comfortably. Sounds like they're not preparing properly.

Saints, my second team, to go up next season or the one after - as long as they get rid of AP.

Second, you want an honest answer to your question the answer is yes, you have been a poor team for most of the seaon full of very good individuals at this level. It was me who were saying you,ve had a dreadful season and I stand by it. With the resources you have had available from start of season (one paper estimated 2 mil on players) you should be much higher. Leeds had 10 point deduction a few years back and challenged for the autos by the end. Thirdly "come and insult us". You lot came here spoiling for an argument. Fourthly, while my heart bleeds for you about your finances last season, we've all been there. You were "lucky" enough to find a super rich owner who wants to buy his way up. As i've said, thats his right. Lets hope he doesn't get bored next season or when he realises that you,ve spent 2 mil (?) on very good league 1 players, not Championship players. I like Saints and will be shocked if you don't go up next season but you are where you deserve to be this season irrelevant of the number of fans you have.

What an odd bunch Saints fans seem to be.

The gloves point is valid. Given your resources you should be higher than you are and are having a bad season. The comparison with leeds is also valid, because A, they almost went up automatically despite starting -15. B, their fans have massive chips on their shoulders as well.

No sane Swindon fan is going to argue that we are a bigger club than you. But we beat you earlier in the season, and have more points than you even if your 10 points were added.

No-one cares that you were a mess at the start of the season. Those games do count you know? We started the season with 1 recognised striker and without a 32 goal striker from last season. You spent £1m on a 32 goal striker.

The same saints posters saying we are making excuses about injuries make excuses about being in admin at the start of the season.

Hopefully you'll do a leeds and stay down for a few seasons. Some of their fans are starting to "get it" now after a few years that they have no divine right to anything beacuse they used to be good and have loads of fans and resources.

For our Saints wind up merchants consider the following.Yes you have a great stadium, so do Leeds, it counts for nothing over 46 games, and just because you have spent loads it doesn't mean you will go up next season this is a tough league to get out of no matter how big you are, or if you have a points deduction, or not.If I were a saints fan I wouldn't be to impressed with Pardews comments ahead of tonights game, would think our Manager will have it plastered all over our changing room , and therefore he won't have to difficult a time motivating our lads.If you win tonight? so what it's just one game,and just as you were short of players when we beat you at our place, we have key players missing throuh injury tonight.It's not an excuse we may still beat you, just because you have won 7, or 8 home games in a row, so had we when we played Bristol Rovers the other Saturday at our place, result we lost 4-0, with a full strength team as it happens, our first defeat in 14 games doesn't make us a bad side.Even with injuries we have a good side, so watch this space.

Everyone has an opinion and I'm entitled to voice mine on a Swindon website FFS. I've watched Swindon all season and we're a strong side who have comfortably beaten most sides.

We'll see what happens tonight but I think your manager and fans are in for a big surprise/shock.

Saints are a great club and a useful League 1 side but Swindon are stronger currently.

It won't be easy for us but in the end I expect a comfortable win. But I might be wrong.

The only people who get up my nose are those who will not tolerate others having a different opinion to theirs. (Well also serial killers, dictators, etc. too.)

I have no axe to grind with these guys and I think that Pardew, buffoon that he may be, makes a perfectly reasonable point. I would be very happy with a point tonight given their form and our injury situation and I don't care how we get it - spoiling tactics or otherwise. I also think he made some quite generous comments about our squad and our manager which shows he does happen to pay attention to what's going on in this division. In my view, had we spent the money they have spent this season, we would definitely have the better squad and better first choice 11.

Genuinely believe we have the better first choice 11, even though our overall squad is a bit lighter, money doesn't count for everything.Having an outstanding manager with the ability to pick up the Charlie Austin type of bargain I would take over their mega bucks any day.
