CHARLIE Austin was delighted to see his extra work on the training ground pay dividends with his 14th goal of the season at the weekend.
Having gone four games without finding the back of the net, the 20-year-old struck the winner as Town overcame Brighton on Saturday, and it was a welcome return to form for the player recruited from non-league Poole Town in October.
More shooting practice was the key factor to getting out of his mini slump, and Austin is now determined to fire Swindon to three more points at Southampton this evening.
“It didn’t really play on my mind before because the team has been doing well,” said the front man.
“But in the two games before Brighton I haven’t scored and we’ve lost, so I was thinking maybe I needed to do a bit more.
“I did a bit more in training - more shooting practice - and JP’s also helped me with crossing. He’s been a great help for me, as has Billy.
“It’s the first time since I’ve been here that I’ve had a few games without scoring, but the boys have been great. No-one’s said much to be honest, they’ve just always supported me.”
Town travel to one of the division’s in-form sides tonight, and Austin cannot wait to play at a ground which has hosted international football, less than six months after turning out in the Wessex League.
“It is a very tough games but we have to go there (Southampton) full of confidence,” he explained. “It’s only another game so I don’t see any reason why we can’t go there and get a result.
“It will be a great atmosphere there - it’s a big club and will be a great place to play.
“The games are coming thick and fast now. There’s about 10 or 11 left, and we know what we have to do to stay in and around the play-offs. It’s in our hands now.”
