FULL TIME: Southampton 0 Town 1

CHARLIE Austin's 15th goal of the season handed 10-man Town a memorable 1-0 win away at Southampton this evening.

The front man struck 11 minutes into the second half having rounded home keeper Kelvin Davis, making up for two earlier disappointing squandered chances.

Unsurprisingly, Saints had the upper hand for large spells of the game and went close through Lee Barnard and Rickie Lambert, but some outstanding goalkeeping from Phil Smith and backs-to-the wall defending kept the hosts at bay.

Swindon even had to cope with the late sending off of Simon Ferry but held firm for huge massive League One points.

The hosts got out of the traps quickly and Lee Barnard forced Phil Smith into an early stop when he flicked Jason Puncheon's delivery goalwards.

And they were inches away from opening the scoring on seven minutes. Rickie Lambert was fouled by Scott Cuthbert 30 yards out and the prolific front man crashed a dipping strike from the resulting free-kick onto the roof of the net.

Swindon soaked up long spells of Saints pressure before carving out what looked likely to be a rare clear cut chance in the 20th minute.

Alan Sheehan's long ball down the left flank found Simon Ferry, who cut inside and slipped an inch-perfect ball into the path of Charlie Austin.

The front man took a touch and shot past keeper Kelvin Davis, only to see his effort go just the wrong side of the upright.

The home side's response was immediate and they had the ball in the back of the net just five minutes later, but Barnard's poke home after captain Dean Hammond had fired against the post was ruled out for offside.

If Town's injury problems were bad enough going into this clash then they were given an even bigger headache in the 37th minute when Scott Cuthbert limped off, replaced by Lecsinel Jean-Francois.

The centre-back had gone down minutes earlier under another challenge and, after attempting to play on, fell to the floor and was unable to continue.

Southampton continued to press and the visitors' defence was called into action once more right on the stroke of half-time.

First, keeper Phil Smith made a superb reaction save to keep out Wayne Thomas' headed after the defender had snuck in unmarked at the far post, before Jonathan Douglas cleared Morgan Schneiderlin's rebound off the line.

And then Smith was at it again, with an even better save, this time from point blank range to deny Radhi Jaidi when the centre-back simply had to score.

If the opening exchange of the second half was anything to go by then it looked like being more of the same as Southampton launched an immediate attack, with Puncheon slamming a strike high and wide from a tight angle on the right.

But it was Town who surprisingly turned the screw, keeping possession for almost entirely the next eight minutes.

And their spell of confident, controlled passing ended with Austin getting on the end of Ward's far post cross to slam the ball against Davis' legs and out for a corner.

If the youngster's two misses so far were uncharacteristic though he made up for it on 56 minutes, racing on to Ward's through ball to break the offside trap, round Davis and slot into the empty net.

The 2,000-plus Swindon supporters behind the goal were in great voice throughout and almost had even more to cheer when Marshall robbed Schneiderlin and played in Austin, whose low shot from distance was turned away for a corner by Davis.

The hosts made a double change in the 71st minute, bringing on midfielder Lloyd James and striker David Connolly for Dean Hammond and Wayne Thomas, signalling their intent for throw everything forward in search of a goal, and seconds later they almost got it.

Lambert collected the ball on the left, was given time and space to cut inside and thundered a strike against the bar with Smith beaten for the first time on the night.

Swindon's task was to get even harder with three minutes of normal time remaining.

Having only been booked just before, Simon Ferry clattered into another challenge and referee Keith Hill instantly produced a second yellow card for the on-loan midfielder.

But Town dug in, defended for their lives and hung on to claim what could be a vital win in their quest for League One promotion.

Just cannot believe the injury jinx yet again now we have lost Cuthbert who has been just outstanding this season boy old boy what a miss he is going to be, hoping it's not too serious but did not sound very good.
Still we seem to be playing ok so I would take a draw no problem but expect Saints to throw the kitchen sink at us. And Phil Smith has made some good saves including one stunning point blank save near half time.
Security word "loan-over" ????

We are a club on the up and have some fantastic backers and who will take this club forward no doubt. Come on Town this result will put me in heaven tonight Come on boys keep it going. Superb result given the injury woes we have and this goes to show we truly have the credentials to push for automatic promotion at the end of the season... It feels good to have other league team fans commenting on how well we play - true testimony to DW and the lads hard work this season. Norwich will be tough for sure but given the way we are playing at the moment i don't think we have any need to fear any team in this league. I'd quite happily miss a day out at Wembley for Automatic Promotion! Anyone?!

I will apologise adam1981 as quite right you did not say you would beat us and in fact you are the only one to come forward to commend the Town for the win. In all fairness I like some friendly banter and its all good fun and thanks for coming back on here to say what you thought of the game. I will say that the other fans I mentioned were quite harsh against our club and it transpired to totally rebound on them big time. I had a sneaky feeling that making rash statements on this forum this morning could leave a few with egg on their faces. Im sure you will storm the Division next season and I do like Pardew being a West ham fan as well as Town fan myself. I always thought Pards would do well at the right club. Good luck at Wembley and rest of season. But I'm certainly enjoying what was a fantastic win by our patched up team.

Listened to the second half on Wiltshire radio at breakfast time here in Australia. Well I am stoked. Just so wish i could be there on Sat-anything is possible now. Great to hear the fans goiing nuts on the raido too. Was in the UK for Xmas and caught the game at Charlton-loved it. It really gives me a spring in my stride to see how well Swindon are going this year. Lifelong (since 57) supporter looking forward to Town playing in a higher division again and appearing on TV in Australia. Radio commentator said it was the best game he had commentated on all season including many EPL games-not biased at all!
Charlie Austin-what can i say-already a total Swindon LEGEND. Maybe a deal on tickets for the last batch of home games would encourage the fans to really get behind the promotion push. Extra fans /extra money/ extra atmoshpere-could just help to get us over the line. Think about it Mr Fitton.

Fantastic display tonight! First 20 minutes or so were pretty even, we were then under severe pressure but battled heroically with last ditch tackles and blocks flying in all over the pitch. Came out 2nd half and played them off the park for 20/25 minutes and then, when the inevitable late pressure came, we soaked it up and hung on.

Everyone played brilliantly tonight, but given the criticism he often gets Smith deserves a special mention for a faultless display between the sticks, and Lescinel was absolutely immense when he came on - I'll admit I was a little nervous when we lost Cuthbert! That said they were all brilliant - Greer looked commanding, the full backs were excellent and in the 2nd half in particular I thought the middle 3, especially Douglas, were excellent in both their work-rate defensively and also getting a foot on the ball to keep possession and stop any pressure building. Marshall and Ward were full of running and provided good outlets to ensure we always looked a threat on the break and Austin worked tirelessly - tough job up top on his own but held it up well and took his goal brilliantly.

In other words, all 11 players were outstanding! Huge result and a performance that had everything - COYR!

Fair play for your comments. Great stadium and a great club with a rich history. You were well organised at the back but I thought your boys gave possession away a little too easily and were too quick to resort to the long ball.

A great performance by the lads tonight. Austin's finish was pure class. Ward was a handful. JP awesome. Smith is doing a great job - two clean sheets away from home in four days against teams in form.

They soaked up the pressure in the first half and really came out all guns blazing in the 2nd.
Douglas was outstnding (as usual) Smith made some fantastic saves, and Marshall too had an exellent game.

You lot dont get it do you? its not about the number of fans - its about results on the pitch. Draw your own concusions from that.

Superb performance from us last night the whole team were superb and we bossed them in all departments. Living in Southampton all i hear about is they have the best squad in this league and we will have no chance against there back four. DW had his tactics spot on because we showed how vulnerable they were at the back with their lack of pace and Jaidi is like a Citroen 2CV accelarating when he turns for a ball.
the support form the town fans was superb as well.
I hope Cuthbert is going to be ok.
The refereee seemed to be a bit of a homer and the times their full backs were holding on to Marshall and Ward which went unpunished and the two booking Ferry got was a total joke. The referee should look at his performance to see how bad he was but back to the positives WELL DONE TOWN SUPERB you made me feel proud.

Anybody got any complaints to make of Phil Smith?

Fantastic result lads, brilliant! I wasn't there last night so am prepared to stand corrected but one poster made a comment about people knocking Charlie, can't remember anyone knocking Charlie to be honest!! From the Adver's report i think a special mention should go to LJF and Smithy, both have received stick this season, quite a lot over the top and short term reactionary imo but I'm really pleased they were both heavily involved and "presumably" played well in such a great result and deserve a mention. A lot of injuries / suspensions now but what a great time for Marshall and other squad players to come in and try and force their way into the reckoning, might turn out to be a good thing. Come on you Reds!

Saint David, Glastonbury

I suggest you change your name to "Turnip from Glastonbury"
You seem to suggest that Bristol Rovers have a bigger home and away support than Swindon Town ?
Bristol Rovers only brought 1,400 supporters to Swindon 10 days ago for a closer local derby.
And here are the current average home attendances for the two clubs so far this season :-
Swindon Town = 7,951
Bristol Rovers = 6,978

I think what you are really upset about Turnip, is last night's scoreline :-

Southampton 0 Swindon Reserves

Just reading on the local saints site and some of the comments calling us a kick and rush side none of our players would make their bench.

oh what a pity they are upset the mighty Saints. A few are calling for PARDEW to go. I love it love it love oh how i do not like saints fans.
the local echo is so biased in its report as well only giving Greer and Austin 8 out of 10 i cant believe they marked Douglas as 5 and most of the rest got 6 or 7 they are upset very upset but according to the echo there still going for the playoffs.
keep dreaming saints.

saintdavid- are you related to anyone whos a tanker driver. Rread the full write up now why saints lost and we won and it was because they didn't play their normal game and put all their effort into the Leeds game oh but hold on i keep hearing they have the best squad of 27 players. Thye dont get it do they they didnt play their normal game as tactically we have a better manager who knew how to play against them and their totally naive manager Pardew never changed his tactics during the game just a long punt upto the local super hero at saints called lambert.
They obviously dont understand football and the real reason they lost oh and we are the only team to take 6 points off them but were rubbish.

stdavid - pith off you stupid little cretin. Have you ever heard that people move to different areas which is why i live in Southampton and surprise surprise there are quite a number of Swindon fans who live in Southampton and Winchester but unlike you they live in houses and not your romany caravan in Glastonbury so i suggest you travel to your next part of the country in your little caravan and my gypsy friend.
Thanks again for the 6 points the one and only team to do that to the once mighty saints, yes saints without the capital s.

cup final? dont think so!!! it was a big game for us but no cup final. cheer up pardew and you arrogant saints fans. we played well but by no means above ourselves. as for brizzle rovers away support, i am told by my work mate that they took 2,800 to your place not 3500. maybe wrong on that but hey it is not important on how many went or how loud we sang, we beat you end of. maybe give us some credit, 6 points no goals conceaded. pardew is a tw@t for his comments but egg on his face me thinks!!! it is great hey!!! how many did you bring to swindon? didnt exatly seel out at our place even with your premiership history.........alwa
ys struggling every season and you will not return for at least a decade, maybe 2. your team is overated and looked crap in second half.bunch of cheats and divers, got ferry sent off when the second foul they guy has stayed on the floor until confronted by sheehan. atleast we dont need to resort to cheating and rolling on the floor. maybe you should be the ones treating a draw like a win but you didnt even get a point from us this season!

I see last night the Chairman of Saints has come out and criticised Pardew again as they are now out of the playoffs i've been saying it all season he is an overated manager and tactically he is not up to it i think he will be out during the summer.
