Crucial win for Cats

SWINDON Wildcats have put their English Premier League destiny firmly back in their own hands after a superb win on the road at Sheffield Scimitars last night.

The 2-1 victory was the Cats’ third in four games after back-to-back home successes against Guildford and Slough last week, and with Bracknell Bees losing both of their weekend encounters Swindon now leapfrog their rivals into the final play-off berth.

With two games remaining in the season Cats now control their own future, and after last night’s result assistant coach Gareth Endicott was quick to highlight how important that is.

“It was a big result, a massive result and one we really wanted,” he said.

“It puts us in the driving seat now and it is all ours to lose.”

Aaron Nell gave Swindon the lead on 05:16 and Sam Bullas extended the advantage on 36:12 as Cats controlled large portions of the contest.

Endicott was delighted with the way in which his teammates gelled on away ice, banishing memories of their 3-1 defeat at MK Lightning on Saturday night to overwhelm their guests.

“It was a really gritty performance and it was great to see,” he said.

“For the first two periods it didn’t look like they were really going to threaten, and although they came out strong in the third the boys did what was necessary and did well.

“Everyone is buzzing at the moment. We’ve got the momentum, which is great, but we have to keep it going.

“The season is not over yet.”

Wildcats face Manchester and Basingstoke next weekend, whilst Bracknell, who are now two points behind Cats, entertain bottom-of-the-table Romford Raiders.

One more point is likely to secure a play-off spot for Swindon, and Endicott has urged against complacency with the finishing line so close.

“We have two more big games on Saturday and Sunday, and we’ll be looking to pick up points in both of them,” he said.

“We’ll be looking to wrap it up, but we have to make sure.”
