JON-PAUL McGovern is unsure whether Town will face a Walsall brick wall tomorrow at the County Ground, but whatever their style he knows he is in for one of his toughest games of the season against a former teammate.

The sides go head to head in League One action this weekend, and lining up for the Saddlers at left-back will be Jamie Vincent, who was released by Swindon last summer.

The veteran defender has become one of their star performers this season, and could be in for a busy afternoon if Walsall decide to employ the tactics of a number of visiting sides in putting 10 men behind the ball.

But McGovern is confident he and his teammates will get back to winning way after one point from two games.

“It’s going to be a really tough game and will be interesting to see how they come and play - whether they will just try to stop us playing or whether they will play a bit themselves,” explained the midfielder.

“A few teams have tried to do that, and some have worked, some haven’t.

“When you pack the midfield you try and absorb the pressure and then hit the other team on the break, and it can be a hard one to break down.

“But we always keep going, show the togetherness and belief that’s in the squad, and have got our rewards for it.

“Jamie is a great player and a good professional, and was maybe a bit unlucky not to still be here.

“He will make it a really tough game for me, I’ve got no doubts about that.

“But it’s not just about me and Jamie Vincent, it’s about Swindon and Walsall. It will be a difficult game but hopefully I can do my part for the team.”

McGovern is currently leading the division for assists, and added another to his tally on Monday night when his driven cross-cum-shot forced Exeter skipper Matt Taylor into an injury-time own goal.

The former Sheffield Wednesday winger is modest when it comes to taking any sort of plaudits, and instead just wants to see his name on the team sheet tomorrow.

“I’ll take that and another four or five of them before the end of the season,” he said of that goal. “It was just nice to get in that position and I was delighted it just went in. Even if it had gone in off the referee we would have taken that.

“I’ve managed to sneak up to the top of the league for the assists, which is nice on a personal level, but as long as I’m doing my job and playing week in, week out, then hopefully the manager is happy with me and hopefully I will retain my place for Saturday.”
