GRAHAM Shadwell and his wife Debbie have scooped the National Mixed Pairs Championship at Beach House, Worthing, writes DAVE EATON.
A member of England’s Commonwealth Games team, Graham warmed up for the Delhi event by partnering Debbie to victory on the last day of this year’s National Championships.
The duo who play for different clubs in the county - Graham for Spencer Moulton (Bradford on Avon) and Debbie for Avon (formerly Cooper Avon Tyres, Melksham), had a comfortable 26-14 victory in the final over Sussex representatives Sue Willmott and David Richardson from the Lindfield Bowls Club.
It is the second time that the Shadwell husband and wife combination have clinched a national mixed title.
They were members of the Wiltshire quartet that landed the mixed fours championship at Worthing in 2007.
In the mixed pairs semi-finals the Wiltshire duo had earlier overcome the challenge of Jamie-Lea Winch, another member of the Commonwealth Games team, and her Warwickshire partner Simon Gilbert 23-15.
Willmott and Richardson reached the final following a 27-17 win against Lynn Newport and Kevin Jones from Somerset.
The Shadwells had on day one of the mixed pairs championships notched up comfortable 28-12 last 16 and 27-4 quarter-final victories over Surrey and Hertfordshire respectively.
