SWINDON TOWN: Happy to stay

CHARLIE Austin believes Town were right to reject transfer deadline day approaches for himself, insisting he is more than happy with life at the County Ground.

The 21-year-old striker is one of the hottest properties in the Football League and attracted interest from a host of Championship sides on Tuesday before the window slammed shut.

Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth are understood to have enquired about the former Poole Town front man, while Millwall saw a £600,000 bid flatly rejected by Swindon’s management.

And after scoring the second goal in their 3-0 win at Southampton the same evening, Austin celebrated by rushing to the away fans clutching the Town badge on his shirt in an apparent show of commitment.

“It (the celebration) shows I’m still a Swindon Town player and what this club means to me,” he told the Advertiser.

“The fans were great and got right behind us at Southampton.

“There’s not really too much to say (about interest from other clubs).

“I didn’t know too much about it - I saw it on Tuesday morning but just thought it was speculation.

“I’m still a Swindon player after the transfer deadline though and what the club did, they did right.”

Austin played the role of both goalscorer and creator on Tuesday as Swindon secured their first win of the season in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

And now the forward is determined to take that form into league action this weekend.

“You’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do for the team to get a win. And we did that on Tuesday,” he explained. It is still early in the season but we really wanted a win and we got it against Southampton.

“Hopefully we can kick on from now on.”

Although you , Charlie, have a rosey future you`re in the right place for at least this season. Please continue to enjoy your goal poaching for Swindon and we`ll enjoy watching you. Take care of your fitness and learn from the older hands. Oh and bring back three points from Carlisle !

Charlies boyhood dream is still intact, his desire to see "his" team promoted through his exploits, and his boot is still there and we all hope that will happen. Decency and desire within this young man are a commodity not often found in this day and age. The tale of the local lad who becomes the club hero is still there to be had and its up to us now to do our part to help the club keep him here. Its almost the Don Rogers story all over again, so lets take part in it and MAKE it happen for him.

Respect all round. We will all wish him well when he moves on to a premier team in the next couple of years - just get us into the championship in the meantime, Charlie!

What a legend this kid is. One of the most committed swindon players in a while, if he spent another two seasons at town, and we got promoted in that time, then he could easily go down as one of swindons greatest ever players, up there with Don Rogers.
Its nice for once to have a great player who is happy here.

He's got some way to go before he can be considered anywhere near the legend that is Don - but I share the general gist of your sentiments.

The grass ALWAYS looks greener on the other side Charlie, but I can tell you it's not often the case. We are on the up, stable, progressing, with a good vibe about the County Ground (even with the indifferent start). Ask Sammy Parkin what he would have done differently in his career, he was as good as you Charlie, ask Simon Cox how much he misses first team football, he was as good as you Charlie. If Peteborough can keep their two hotshots for the long term, why can't we keep our hotshot for the long term.

well said that man, well said.

If our aim is to gain promotion to the championship, then our aim should be to hold on to Austin and him play for us, in that championship.

I was going to give Sky the benefit of the doubt with Saints not allowing photographers in but that is a very old picture.

Off subject, I,ve just seen the goals on BBC from Tuesday and the 3rd is why I rate O'brien. He leaves there defender with no chance when picking up the ball. Granted not the worlds greatest crosser but the pace is a real weapon. There is no doubt he is improving and I think with more game time he will be able to improve on his crossing.

Oh and as for Charlie. Awesome player. Keep doing what your doing and we'll all be winners

It will be interesting to see what happens in October when AF opens contract renegotiations. If CAs contract is not extended in October, let's hope we don't get to the end of this season with CA only having 1 year left and faced with another Greer situation...

Hi ginger-nutz, Thanks for that bro, I could not resist to be honest and do not forget as they had some **** giving it large especially that plank called Baquette. Many thanks for the back up I have not looked at the site since last posting so will get straight on there. Interesting thing is they have a few Grim Reaper types down there on their site so it must be a global thing. Many thanks for the support and back up, lets keep em on their toes.

On another note football rumour site, i know alot of it is rubbish but it does give alot of names flying about, just nice to discuss any truth in erm so for free transfers ive seen these being named as coming to the town

Teixera - Swindon
Francis Jeffers - Swindon
Richard Kingson - Swindon
Sam Sodje - Swindon

As much as I have high regard and expectations for Charlie. Legends usually put in at least 10 years with the club and earn testimonials, IF we can get promoted, it's possible he will stay and become a real legend, but to put him in that league of stars after less than 1 season, is a little optomistic.

Well done Charlie, glad you're in it for the long haul! You make us proud to be Swindon fans.

As for the transfers mentioned, some good names there - Jeffers would be a great signing but his wage demands might be more than what we can offer (I thought Blackpool had snapped him up, to be honest). Kingson is a good goalkeeper, but would he drop down to play in League 1? No mention of Jay DeMerit there, who has been previously linked. Tiexera and Sodje - yes please, would do well at Swindon.

Agree with you old town but lets settle for a legend in the making for now although these days i dont see a player staying with us for 10yrs unless there fairly average,we can live in hope though eh?

I can't recall how long he was with us, but it was a long time that Steve White was here and he was awesome. He became part of the furniture but scored so many goals over the years. A very humble legend. Great security words for Chalkie, 'just-goal'.
