Wilson rues missed chances

DANNY Wilson was left frustrated by a lack of killer instinct by Town in front of goal at Brunton Park this afternoon, which saw his side leave Cumbria with one point instead of three.

Wilson was pleased with the style of his Swindon side's performance in their draw with Carlisle United, but rued several missed clear-cut opportunities to take a maximum return from their long trip to the north west.

Charlie Austin was the main culprit, spurning a last minute chance akin to his Wembley miss in May.

But the striker, like many Robins players, put in a good shift for his manager and the team's display drew praise from the County Ground boss, albeit tinged with a little disppointment.

"You sometimes get half chances and you sometfrom the County Ground boss, albeit tinged with a little disppointmentimes get scrambles whch you say are half-chances, but we've had four great chances, but we haven't finished them off," he said.

"We'll take the positives. Carlisle are unbeaten and difficult to play at home, but really Dave (Lucas) has not had to make one save all game.

"We carved he best chances out, in particular in the second half when we opened ourselves up and played much better football."

can someone who went to the game (or listened to the full commentary) tell me how Pericard played? (and ball when he came on). Wonder why dossevi wasnt played today as he was available.

Listened to the game. Played well, VP had a good game. Can understand DWs frustration, we had by far the better chances, CA missed a couple that you'd expect him to notch in his sleep. Kennedy was playing really well and was surprised he was subbed. Oh well, draw away to the team in second not a bad result. Season starts on Sat! U Reds...

thats good to hear Pericard had a good game, I thought he might net the winner today after his brace against southampton. The big plus today is carlisle had 18 corners yet our defence seems to have turned the corner (just heard morrison speaking), and without any new CB in other than the kennedy/sheehan replacement at LB. Id still be inclined to get a decent CB in on loan purely because we're in trouble cover wise if anything happens to cuthbert/morrison.
Not looking at the downside by any means but if brentford beat sheff wed at home tomorrow we will be rock bottom!

They said he did well, in particular the quality of his passing - sounded like he was putting Kennedy in some good positions up that left-side.
Come on Adver! 1-1?!?! This is embarrassing......

Drop to second bottom but listening to the game we played well. Positives in that Cuthbert seemed to have come to terms with things and Morrison was solid. Dougie may be getting there but some way off his best still. Ferry seemed to be involved throughout. Some of our best passing seemed to come from Timlin. The other fancied sides are struggling too, so still confident we will be in the shake up at the end of the season. Think Danny seems intent on at least two loan signings, most likely a CB and striker I guess. Nothing from the Liverpool connection so far.

The current league table should be ignored, it's far too early.
The only thing that requires any attention is what is happening on the pitch - ie individual form, partnerships, different departments connecting better, communication, defending better, work-rate, chances created/converted...
.
JD was more like his old self today, Ferry's energy was a feature of the game, we created chances, we did the ugly things well & kept a clean sheet, Timlin's had 2 good games in that narrow position, Kennedy & Morrison are playing well & gaining good experience, noticeable link-up play between Austin & Pericard in the last 2 games, etc etc
Looks like we're heading in the right direction to me.

Bit disappointed with the way we (CUFC) performed but well played to Swindon- we had more of the ball but no cutting edge.Austin was really impressive today ditto Pericard and I'm sure the goals will start to flow soon although I think if Paynter had been there today you would have won it.Wilson had obviously done his homework- we built our set play work around Harte (who wouldn't ) and Swindon really didn't mind conceding corners today.
Fair play to your 264 fans not a bad effort and a lot better than MK Dons & Brentford who battled to bring 120 each. It really **** me off when people start crying about the distance to Carlisle, how far it is etc etc. Our fans travel every other week in numbers and don't complain about it

Good luck for the rest of the season

In the words of the mighty Quo - "down, down, deeper and down" Pluses have got to be 2nd clean sheet in a row and a draw with Carlisle at BP is a fair result particularly when they had a spate of corners and couldn't break the Town down. However two swallows don't make a summer and I'm not convinced that Town have stopped shedding goals.

Negatives - no firepower - PerrierWater fizzed then went flat and its clear fans expectations of Charlie to be their darling(and saviour) by scoring in every game are way too high -if he gets 20 this campaign he'll do well.

Carlisle is a helluva way from Swindon if one is a travelsickness sufferer. It also costs more than say Exeter or Brentford away ! Carlisle sells poor chips too !

Nice post Cumbrianinswindon - I love going up to Carlisle as I try to make a long weekend of it and enjoy a day in and around town.
I think everyone forgets the loyal Carlisle fans who travel the length and breadth of the country EVERY other week!
How close is the nearest game this season?....it must be a good 140-150 mile round trip at a guess?
I can't believe how nonchelant I am at being 2nd from bottom in the league - I don't expect us to be anywhere near that byt eh end of September...in fact, had Charlie's last minute chance gone in (or at Hartlepool) we would be in 14th position and only 3pts behind 6th spot - just going to give us a big story of Swindon rising from 23rd to 3rd by Christmas!! :-)

Our shortest trip is Hartlepool and apart from Huddersfield, Oldham , Tranmere & Sheffield Wed, all the other team are in the south. The problem is most teams bring around 120-150 fans a time(cant wait to see how many Exeter and Dagenham bring up) & with our own gates being around 5200, its an ongoing battle for us to compete with better resourced teams. Brunton Park holds over 16000 so it can seem quite lonely and empty but while we dont have the same numbers as some other clubs ,we can still make it tough for away teams.Passion?- you should have seen Brunton Park when a certain on loan goalkeeper from Swindon scored with the last kick to keep us in the League 11 years ago.Always had a regard for Swindon lending us Jimmy Glass - we wouldn't be around today if it wasn't for you!

Expected you boys to be challenging for the play offs again and on yesterdays performance , I think I'm right

Does not take awy we are second from bottom and after brentford game as a post said we could be bottom.
Any news on replacements??????

mallorca,

Mostly agree with where you are coming from. However we have just this week played two of the better skilled sides in L1 and kept a clean sheet in both games. I admit we dont have a "name" in defence but we now have some guys who work hard and apply themselves very well, and know each others game, so a good relationship is already being forged. I'm quite happy for that to continue.
As you correstly point out, we have no direct replacement for Paynter, Dossevi didn't even get a look yesterday which I think was terrible as he had put club before country.
Dossevi has something about him and with out doubt, he is a poacher of goals and he doesn't get a start. Austin is very guilty of wasting gilt edged chances. he is off his game without doubt. Wilson seems loathe to try Dossevi up front with Pericard, or Ball.
If you want a "name" Danny Shittu was available earlier in the week and would be purpose made for our defence, but all these new names, where and when are they going to get a game, and more we have, the more difficult it becomes to find the right combination, and I think to a degree that is our current problem. Tinkerman-Dan seems to want to sub people in a game as a matter of course, often taking off our best performers.
As goes the league table, we are still in September, just look at Norwich last year.

3 points from 15...

Good points Wizard. Our league position is not in itself a cause for concern at the moment, but we can't get away from the fact that it reflects very poor form - relegation form in fact. I don't think we'll end up in a relegation scrap but if we don't start winning soon, we'll find ourselves a long way back from the pacesetters. On the substitutions point, I thought it was a bit strange when we were a goal up against Orient, we had two subs about to come on, then Orient scored - and they still came on. This seems to back up your point about substitutions being made regardless of the way the game is going. I see you have made the "too many cooks" point again - and I have to agree. I am still at a loss to see how we have a better squad than last season, as so many people have said. Yes, this season we have a bigger pool of players capable of playing at this level, but I don't believe we have the same quality - and I would take quality over quantity any day.

Happy with that result to be honest and although a last minute goal would have been nice that would have been unfair to Carlisle.
The one thing that stands out is our postings are well down after a decent result, just to show how many come out of the woodwork when we lose. I suppose its that human nature thing just to remember the negatives and forget the positives. Now if you ever think the Town forum is bad after a loss then just have a quick shifty on the Daily Echo Southampton forum on the game posting. 330 hits at 1.40 present time and blimey its like world war 3 on there. Obviously the fan base is huge compared to our club but I mean 330 post and growing. There are plenty of Muppet's too as we have one or two, but nothing on their scale. Hopefully after 5pm next Saturday we can hope to add plenty of fuel to that raging inferno.
Definitely food for thought though on how these forums allow us to let off steam or show our gratitude.

A good point away at another difficult place to go. The amount of corners Carlisle had they should have won easily but that shows our defence is improving all the time. Cannot understand why Kennedy was taken off he sounded like the towns MOM imo. Dossevi deserved to play for giving up international duty, cannot blame him if he should put in a transfer request when able. Charlie seems to be off form at present so why not try Pericard and Dossevi? Morrison had another good game. Is he the reason for the defence improvements?

Does it really matter at this stage. Top team can hit a bad run as easily as we can hit a good run. All quite meaningless. Time to panic is if we are still there in January. We have had a bad start same as Southampton who have the same squad as last season, and some of the best strikers in the Division and we are 1 point behind them.I will wait to judge after at least 20 games then decide if its good or bad. Both Carlisle and Sheff Wed have dropped points on the form guide this weekend so has the bubble burst for them. No its called 46 games.
