Swindon chairman Fitton hits out at Pompey for claims over £1million Austin bid

TOWN chairman Andrew Fitton has hit out at Andrew Andronikou’s claims that Portsmouth had a £1million bid for Charlie Austin turned down on transfer deadline day.

The former County Ground administrator is now overseeing cash-strapped Pompey’s finances and a takeover at Fratton Park by Hong Kong-based businessman Balram Chainrai is believed to be just days away.

As revealed by the Advertiser last week, the Championship side enquired about signing Swindon’s star striker Austin and proposed a fee, which was flatly rejected, but no formal offer was ever made.

However, Andronikou went on record yesterday as saying: “The owners put in a £1million bid for Charlie Austin from Swindon and that was turned down.

“They want to bring some young players into the club and had identified him as a quality player.”

And those claims angered Fitton, who told the Advertiser he has evidence to back up the fact that no bid was received and that the mentioned price was well below that claimed by Andronikou.

“I can absolutely categorically deny that they (Portsmouth) put in a bid of £1million for Charlie Austin,” said Fitton.

“And I am appalled at them putting out a story saying that. They mentioned a figure but it didn’t reach £1million, and I have got the text to prove it.

“I’m not going to say who the text is from but it proves what that figure was and I could really embarrass them with that.

“But I won’t. We live in a professional world, so all I am prepared to say is that Portsmouth did not put in a bid for Charlie Austin, let alone one for £1million.”

Fitton went on to echo the comments made by Swindon manager Danny Wilson last week, regarding clubs making transfer targets public knowledge.

He said: “Danny touched on it the other day and has my full backing on this - the notion of putting stories out into the press to unsettle players has to stop. It is amateurish.”

Last night Paul Caddis captained Scotland Under 21s as they secured a place in the European Championship play-offs.

Caddis helped Scotland secure their play-off place as the Scots beat Austria 2-1 thanks to Chris Maguire’s late winner.

Meanwhile Billy Bodin’s Wales Under 21s missed out on a play-off place after losing 1-0 against Italy.

Well many of us have opinions about AA and most of them un printable here. While talking about transfers, I mention Cox on Monday and it looks like Reading are tieing up a deal, perhaps we should have been quicker off the mark and secured a fave , who with Austin could have been outstanding.

As Mr Fitton says, it unsettles our players when they tell the press about a bid (or non bid in this case), but it makes Pompey's owners look good in front of their fans, making them think that despite being in a financial mess, they are bidding big money for decent players. Shame on them, but credit to Mr Fitton for keeping one of our hottest properties out of reach of these sleazebags. Charlie boy, stay here for the long term, we are run by decent people who will allways look after your best interests.

What i can't understand is why AA would have released this statement in the first place. Surely he must have known it would be refuted and that it would make him and Pompey's owners look stupid rather than good in the eyes of their supporters?

Why would Cox join us over Reading? He did well here, but he started at Reading...both clubs are in the same area of the country pretty much...both have a good set up....but they are a divsion higher than us, and would probably pay him more!

That's why the amateurs are in the mess they are. A £1 million bid is an embarressment in itself in todays market. We wont be able to hang on to Charlie for ever, especially if the season doesn't pan out the way we all wanted. But at least we can hang on to him until the time and price is right for all involved.

If there was any justice, Andronikou would be sharing a cell with Diamandis now.

It is great to see that Andronikou is as organized and managing as professionally as we would expect: http://www.dailymail

Isn't this pretty much a re-run of last weeks story??? Clubs making silly bids, which unsettles players, which annoys Mr. Futon.... I think we get the message!

London, I totally agree, but which type of cell would you prefer for these aholes, padded or rat and scorpion infested, after all thats what carp attracts usually, isn't it ?

Perhaps AA is jealous of what has been achieved here, especially given the state of the club when he sold it to Fitton, perhaps a feeling of bad blood exists between the two of them, if not before then certainly now.

After their recent history, I'm surprised that they even have £1 to spend never mind £1 million. Should go on paying off creditors in an ideal world....

Whatever next with Pompey, a 21 year old spoilt brat from Cheshire attempting a £25m buy-out of them?

Oh wait....

After behaviour such as this AA should NEVER be appointed again into a simular position. He is definately not suitable for the task, and has little grasp of what is expected from being in this position. Total Git !!

It's interesting that Portsmouth can supposedly come up with that kind of money yet they are close to going out of business as their debts are so high.

I would not be at all surprised if mr fitton took a step back from being chairman! clearly alot of things that go on annoy the hell out of him along with his other business interests i can see him taking more of a back seat in over seeing our football club.

It's a shame there are not more people like Fitton in the current day football! Reading other sites, it particular the paper that released the story first, the comments below from Portsmouth fans suggest they are less than impressed with the transfer dealing over the Summer and are simply embarrassed by their clubs actions. Saying that most question where the hell they would have got 1 million from? HAHA The circus merry go round from Portsmouth.. Let's home next time, they keep their business to themselves.
