SWINDON TOWN: Loan signings will have to wait

DANNY Wilson believes Town fans may not see new arrivals at the County Ground until at least the end of the month, to ensure his side are well covered for the Christmas period.

With the emergency loan window now open, Wilson has the option to bring in players on a temporary basis up to a maximum of 93 days.

And leaving those deals until the start of October would ensure that a busy festive spell is covered - a common tactic for most managers including Wilson.

“It would be daft not to (have the loans covering Christmas), because that is one of the busiest periods of the season,” he told the Advertiser.

“You would ideally try and encompass all that together.

“We will identify the players but it may not happen in the next week or so.

“We will assess ourselves over the period and not rush into things like we have always said.

“And we feel that with the lads starting to put a bit of momentum together, it gives us a little bit of breathing space.

“But it still doesn’t alter the fact that we need one or two areas to be covered, and those areas will be priority for us.”

With goals being shipped at an alarming rate in the season’s early games, one of those “priority” targets was an experienced centre-back.

But following successive clean sheets and a handful of impressive performances from centre-backs Scott Cuthbert, Sean Morrison and Lecsinel Jean-Francois, Wilson hinted that Swindon’s focus may be changing.

“We have wanted our lads to prove themselves, and in a few areas that maybe we questioned they are starting to gel very well - and by that I mean the full-back and centre-back positions.

“With all due respect, Sean, Scott and Lecsy have surprised me over the last few games, and surprised me very pleasantly.

“We thought we maybe needed experience straight away, but the way they are forging a relationship may give us a bit of breathing space.”

We need slightly more than 'a bit of momentum'. Anything less than a win will see pressure on Danny gain momentum. I trust Danny as most do, but am concerned because at the end of the day the league table tells a true story, we are not very good at present. I've seen it before, when you are top everything goes your way, when you are bottom, confidence is effected and strikers miss sitters like Charlie did on Sat. Am a wee bit nervous about Sat, where last season I knew we would give any team a run for their money.

Well if you sit back and think about what is said above then yes, it makes sense. A bit frustrating, but basically, we have who we have and the door isn't forever open for incoming staff, they all have to be paid. Wilson seems happy with the staff we now have on board, and only one loan. There were many moans last season about the fact that all the key players seemed to be on loan. The wage bill must have been huge. Now things are under more constraint. With the double dip resession close by, Fitton is being a bit sensible. The club is walking a very tight rope one would think financially. If the guys start winning some games we will soon climb out of this mess. If we don't then they will re assess things in three weeks time, time for steady nerves and not to panic. Stay positive, calm and best not to jump in before thinking things through.
Roll on Saturday and three points.

What 'sitter' are you referring to?

Was it the one that bobbled up about 6 inches ashe went to strike it?

Anyway, I understand your point, a big game saturday, but if you believe that the table doesn't lie, and that 5 games in, pressure is building, then by the same token or thinking, you must admit that recent form has been much better than the 1st 3 games of the season?
For that reason I am very optimistic about this Saturday.

I remain absolutely confident that, once the current squad has settled down, we will have as good a team as any. Loan signings will be extra strength, but Caddis will show his potential, Timlin has already demonstrated unexpected strength, Kennedy and to a lesser extent Evans have shown they have what it takes, Morrison has starred, O'Brien is taking on his critics, Pericard is definitely coming good....OK Rose has disappointed so far, but Sheehan has arrived, and the jury is still out on Prutton. But actually we are a lot stronger than we thought we were! Be patient.

Tough games ahead just hope we start getting some wins under our belt soon, have the players who have improved over last couple of games got the ability and mental strength to be consistent ?? players need to prove to the manager they are good enough to be at the club, the back four still lacks that experienced leader in my opinion also who is the player to partner austin up front? pericard dossevi or ball,or play austin, ball with dossevi behind the front two lots of decisions for the manager who needs to get this right before this season turns into a non event.

Bradley red,

Austin and Ball or Austin and Pericard, with Dossevi tight in behind seems to be very logical to us, but not Wilson. I would still find room for Ferry though, with JD and J-PM, and four across the back. As you correctly point out we now need to sort out the scoring options, and without Pericard in there Austin will get kicked to pieces.

I guess the Premier League new squad rules are not quite working as we might have hoped. I thought a few players might become available quickly after teams announced their 25-man squads. But this pointless 'home grown' rule means that it hasn't really affected many clubs. Arsenal have named a squad of just 20, not 25 players (none of them English) which is supplemented by 50 under-21 players!

The biggest 'names' that haven't been given a squad place are Jonathan Woodgate and Danny Shittu. But I guess that one is injured while the other is looking for a permanent club. Maybe younger players (foreign 'home grown' or English) will get more chances at their clubs under the new rules. But the new rules seem to have stifled transfer activity in, and hence loan players out.

I don't see that we need 'cover' for Christmas. We need to kickstart our season now - and fast. I prefer signing our own players full time rather than loans, but you can only afford a certain size of payroll, and I'm unimpressed by some of our recent signings. We'll see.

If I was at Saints I would have gone for Phil Brown, and bought him a vat of tanning lotion. That said he did so well at Hull and has the proven ability to get his teams promoted on a tight budget. Curbishley would have been my second choice. With NO disrespect I dont think Adkins has sufficient experience to take a team all the way to the Prem which is what they want.

Well quite honestly I'm completely flabbergasted & utterly disgusted that DW didn't a) compete for whoever this player is, b) inform us that he is trying to sign this player, and c) if he did indeed fail to sign this player then surely that is the final straw!!!!

In fairness, Danny can only get who is available and if targets he want aren't going to be made available for loan then there's not very much he can do. There are a few good frees like De Merit, Aliadiere etc. so hopefully Danny will be reinforcing the side before long.

London Red says...
9:04pm Thu 9 Sep 10

The answer to those questions are:
.
1 DW will be given a long time as you never achieve anything be chopping and changing all the time. Is it a coincidence that Man U are the most successful team and have the longest serving manager? No it's not!
.
Also the board have more realism than most posters. They will recognise how far we have come in such a short space of time. i.e. Delegation battle to Wembley in 12 months. They will also realise unlike most on here that only 5 games have gone and not left!
.
Saying that though they have targets and if we fail they will act. We must get 2 of the following 3: JPT final, FA 3rd round and or POs. We can still do those so DW will not be under any pressure.
.
2 Yes despite what most posters say about AF being tight. We have spent a lot on players like McNamee, Cox, Casal, Amankwaah, Cuthbert, Austin, Caddis and Ferry. Plus bigger wage bill to get players like Lucas, Douglas and Greer in.
.
3 Yes we do have the squad. It's is just that new teams need time to gel. Ours is showing signs and I now fully expect us to start to show our potential, pick up points and move towards the top.

yes, good points made i suppose the key is how quick the new players gel with who was here last season and for wilson to get the best out of the squad, but ultimately the chairman and the board will have there own ideas of progression and as we all know if those players do not start to win matches it is always the manager who gets the sack!!!will be interesting to see how this season turns out and if the manager is still here in may 2011.

Oi Den! says...
9:44pm Thu 9 Sep 10

London Red, I agree that there are some good signs, but I can't see that we are going to produce a side as good as last season's from this squad. There's not much doubt that we can achieve a respectable mid-table finish. However, unless we get lucky in the loan market, I think promotion is very unlikely. Last season I thought we had the best Town side in a generation. For whatever reason, they couldn't finish the job when the finishing line was in sight. Most of us seem to agree that the current squad is underachieving. That continuation in form from last season is a worrying factor - and it's why some of us find the "time to gel" argument a little unconvincing.

Grimreaperswifesboyfriend says...
10:28pm Thu 9 Sep 10

Thinks change as the season goes on - dunnit!!
The squad this time last year was no way the same as at Xmas or earlier this year - werenit.
Every month will see development of the squad and by January I betcha we see a diffrunt pictchur.
Consequently I am with those that say - give the team time to gel, be patient with the loan signings - better to have them once the current crop of new boys aqre settled and remember Obadeyi and Hutchinson!!

London Red says...
10:48am Fri 10 Sep 10

Last season can not be included in a gelling period as the team has changed since then!
.
The poor end was due to fatigue as the players simply ran out of steam after a 50+ game season.
.
This has been addressed by having more competition - this year we have 2 in each position who could play where as last year we did not!
.
Plus gelling is occurring all over - i.e. Cuthburt has to gel with a new CB
.
the CB's then need to gel with new FB's
.
Ferry wasn't here so DP had to gel
.
O'Brien is basically new so needs to gel
.
Then we have Austin needing to gel with Vince or Dossevi.
.
Thiks take time but as Ferry said the team new look in players and formation is showing signs and it won't be long before we are flying again.

Oi Den! says...
3:29pm Fri 10 Sep 10

London Red, I wasn't suggesting that last season should be included in the "gelling period". My point was that we went into a slump after Easter, and that slump has continued into this season. I am therefore wondering whether "time to gel" is as important a factor as you suggest. However, for the sake of argument, let's assume you are right. In that case, how long do you think the gelling period should last?
