SWINDON TOWN: Wilson slams Saints' managerial saga

DANNY Wilson has labelled Southampton’s on-going managerial saga as “absolutely crazy” - and heaped the pressure on whoever eventually takes over at St Mary’s.

Alan Pardew was sacked from the south coast club less than a fortnight ago on the back of a 4-0 win which brought chairman Nicola Cortese under fire from fans and pundits.

And as the sides face each other in League One action at the County Ground tomorrow, Wilson believes Southampton’s early-season struggles can be put down to their upheaval behind the scenes.

“It’s crazy - absolutely crazy,” Swindon’s manager told the Advertiser.

“If you’re going to make a decision then make it in the summertime.

“Why wait until this time if you’re not going to get on with your manager or whatever reason it was?

“What is the point in waiting around, because this is what happens - it unsettles them.

“This could go on longer and I hope it does - I hope it goes on a few more games and they don’t get wins.

“Certainly I think there is a better and more sensible way of doing things, but that’s the way some people work and it’s not my place to tell them how to run their business and their clubs.”

Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins appeared to be heading for the Saints’ hotseat yesterday until a dispute broke out over compensation, and it now looks as though caretaker manager Dean Wilkins will remain in charge for this weekend’s clash.

But Wilson warned Pardew’s eventual successor that they can not afford to make any mistakes at a club desperate to climb back up the football ladder.

“It is a fantastic football club, a big football club, and whoever goes in there will not only be in charge of an ambitious club but the expectation level is sky-high,” said Wilson of Southampton.

“There’s no room for mistakes quite honestly. They have to go in there straight away and get results. That is the pressure that comes with the size of that job.

“But with the squad they’ve got they are more than capable of achieving that.”

Yes seems there chairman is bit silly. Still hopefully should be to our advantage we hope?????
Like many of us we want our team to win and start playing again the football that will ensure survival let alone promotion.
In one breadth I think DW's recruiting methods are a bit naff as to time it takes to actually get bodieis on the playing staff. Yet he has proved us wrong many many times. My only fear is come mid/end Oct he has not brought in decent players who he is targeting we will suffer.
The team we have aint that bad but it's the old story the CB and striker were never really relaced.
Make no bones I want the Town to succeed but many of us I guess winge on mainley out of frustration.
All we need now is for AF not to have confidence in DW then we would have major problems

Good luck sat Town

I think we need to be VERY careful tomorrow. DW's words could come back to bite him, hard !!
I think Southampton will have been training very hard just for this game. Dean Wilkins will be looking for a result, as will the team, because who ever takes over is likely to be in the stands looking on.

Saints fans are very happy at the moment and the papers have egg on their faces.

Comments after last nights Saints Chairman's forum.. Read it Mr Wilson instead of the anti Cortese crap the Newspaper chain have been spreading as Nicola Cortese intends taking Saints to winning The Champions League.. and NZ Red (Hi) he told me in last years forum when they do win they'll come on a down under tour....

From The Saints Mad Site.. cut and paste

"well just got back. people who see NC in a negiative way let me tell you how wrong you are, the guys ambition is faultless with the money to back his ambition.

financial backing.
its still there and nothing has changed as regards to when st marcus passed away and he's got full backing of the liebherr family.

manager.
when asked about AP? he looked down and smiled, looked at me and said lets just say i had no choice, it had to be done.
as regards to the new manager the list is very short and a descition will be made imminantly (dont listen to the media at all) i piped up and said please not phil brown and his reply way not a chance XD XD XD

payment plans for STHs.
will be introduced again. once the new swipe card system is installed. as it is to many people brought STs did'nt pay for them and theres no way they can stand on the turnstiles and examine every ST.

Sponsors.
the club are already in negotiations with various companys for next season already.

media.
he hates the media. he said no matter what you say they always turn it around. im not used to media attention and dont like it. someone else said but you need to like them because alot of saints fans dislike you for the mushroom effect you need to get your intention out in the open, he was not suprised at all. and is already in discusions to start a radio solent open saints forum. when asked about the press ban? they are not banned only photographers, journalists are welcome just not photographers (again the media getting crossthreaded).

one of the last face to face chats with marcus.
marcus said i want to get back in the premiership and be about a mid table team. NC said i cant do that i want to win the champions league. apparently marcus's eye widened and he said do what you got to do.

to sum up the evening he is a really ambitious family orientated guy and here for along time as he said this will be my last job. im glad he's at the helm of our club, it could be alot worse.

IN NICOLA WE WILL TRUST.

I wonder if Danny Wilson is feeling the pressure himself. Overlooked for the Saints post after 3 wins on the spin and yet so far this season in the league Swindon have done worse than Saints. I think he is a very worried man. There are a lot of good managers out there !!!

Do we really need an essay on this page about how great Southampton's chairman is??? Surely the Daily Echo has a similar section. I notice they are also running an article about how a 'little' club like Bournemouth have a manager who has just turned down the chance of taking over as manager at St Marys!

The Echo and your paper are I believe in the same chain.. The chain are slating Nicola Cortese because he openly hates the press and has banned their photographers from St Mary's prefering to sell papers photos taken by in house media people.. Other clubs may soon follow suit.

The piece above is a retort to Danny Wilson's diatribe. Fair I think.. Good Luck Robins.. Hope for a great game for all. Sure you'll make the play offs at least.

Wilson should focus on turning round the Town's problems. Results from last 20 or so games have been unacceptable. All talk of new players seems to come to nothing...what about the so called special relationships with Man City, Liverpool and Celtic...so far one loan signing in David Ball, hardly inspiring!!
Plenty of talk about Plymouth rejects though!!

The Advertiser needs to run a story so they look at what could be interesting about the upcoming match and then feed Danny a question.

Wait until next week and I guarantee that, because it is Walsall, there will be an interview with Super Sammy Parkin asking him about his time at the Saddlers last year!

You could go through the whole year writing headlines months before the matches happen.

WE care about SWINDON TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB - nothing else. The important thing to us is climbing the table and pretty sharpish too. Ok, the loan market may be slow but we need cover in defence - Morrison has done very well but he's a young lad and we'll need cover for him. Maybe young Thomas Cruise of Arsenal - he's said he'd consider a loan deal (http://www.goal.com

Sorry gotta disagree this time, where have you picked up on others here thinking tomorrow will be easy?

I for one think tomorrow will be a very tough game for us, but I thought that before any of this rubbish was printed.

I also believe it has no bearing on the outcome tomorrow. If we are at our best, we will win. If we are not, I don't think we will, but Idoubt we'll lose because of what is written or quoted through media outlets.

Anyone who suggests that life is now harder for us because of this is wrong imo.

So given the mickey mouse way the manager hunt has gone this week, should I expect their squad to be in turmoil and dejected tomorrow?

I still predict a 2-1 win for us, but we will see.

the_gloves says...
3:41pm Fri 10 Sep 10

I'm going for a 2-1 win to us. Whilst it was a deserved win for Rochdale last week I heard Saints played quite well so am expecting a tough test. They still have good players and if there is a leader in the dressing room they might have pulled together in the face of adversity. However, I'm convinced we've also turned a corner. We've had a couple of good results and I think Morrison and Sheehan/Kennedy on the left of our defence makes us much stronger hence the clean sheets so I reckon we can get a result. Either way it'll be a good game.

As for the article, I don't care about Saints enough to know anything other than what I read in the main media. I'm also sure that Danny doesn't care enough to go and find out every detail. He is clearly offering his opinion on what has been written and the adver has gone with it because it was highlight of usual pre-match press conference. Agree with it or not but football would be a lot less interesting if the adver didn't ask these questions and Danny didn't answer them.

stfclondon says...
3:43pm Fri 10 Sep 10

Of course tomorrow will be a hard game. Regardless of the JPT result and the two wins last season, Southampton are still one of the strongest sides in the division and we have no pre-ordained right to beat them.

Let's hope our tendency to raise our game against the better sides is evident again tomorrow and we get the win we need to kick-start our season. But talk of 'must win' games at this stage of the season is a bit dramatic - we could lose or draw tomorrow and then go on a ten game winning run.

If we're talking predictions, I will say 2-1 to Swindon being as we're at home and a good home crowd atmosphere will boost the players.

There's nothing wrong with the Adver asking the question and there's nothing wrong with Wilson answering it, except that he should perhaps have been a bit more careful in his response. glasred says...
6:12pm Fri 10 Sep 10

No, not angry.Sometimes it needs a very strong statement to get the point accross.Rather than comment on the running of Southampton and saying such things as managerial matters should have been sorted out in the summer,Wilson should look at his position and perhaps wonder why he failed to assemble a strong sqaud in the summer. As for Wilson saying the expectations are massive at Southampton for any future manager,he should simply concentrate on OUR club because what you concentrate on and pay attention to is useualy what you get.

I'm finding it hard to understand why so many on the forum being concerned as to Danny's response to the South Coast team's manager situation. he is in the union and obviously doesn't like to see fellow managers sacked, albeit on this occassion he would seemed to be mis-informed As one of the Saints posters mentioned, most of us were not aware he was sh****g his players partners and the team refused to play for him. Even before this knowledge many of our posters said he was a sleeze-ball, now it's confirmed, it's SCT problem not ours, IMO their chairman took the correct action, there is no place in any business for that type of behaviour.
On another note I bought one of my grandson's a ticket for tomorrows match, the Arkle stand where I have my season ticket is sold-out both for us and SCM, they have already taken additional 1,000 for Stratton Bank, but I was told by ticket office they will also be allowed to but tickets on the day. IMO they are some of the better visitors to the CG, so I'm looking forward to both teams playing the game in the right spirit, would expect something in the region of 13,000 - 14,000 tomorrow.
On another point bought my concession £5 for the Torquay game, free for my grandson (under sixteen), fantastic value, would urge as many as possible to take their kids, should be a good game as Torquay are playing very well so far this season. (by the way if memory serves me right, we had luck on our side against them in round 1 or 2 of the 1969 league cup triumph), was it 4-3 we scrapped through or was that Bradford. are you in a time warp, we do not have a player called Mcnamee. Agree with the rest of your post, it would be hard to drop Morrison, Sheehan will be first choice LB, Prutton may still prove to be an assett, but IMO he will not automatically win back the shirt as long as Ferry does the business. Rose has blown his chance at LB, he'll either go back to the North or convert to left mid-field
