ENGLAND hockey star Nick Brothers is targeting a new playing contract... with Swindon Town.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper, who has played 22 times for his country, will take part in the opening stage of Samsung’s Win A Pro Contract competition with the aim of bagging a deal at the County Ground.

Brothers, from Fairford, will be put through his paces in front of club scouts and coaches at the west London trial tomorrow.

He said: “I always analyse football goalkeepers as most of the skills are directly transferable to hockey, except the ball doesn’t travel at 100 miles an hour.

“I am really curious to see how well I can do in a full size goal. I have always been quite good in a five-a-side goal because of my quick reactions.

“I constantly watch keepers make mistakes and think that I could have done better. I guess we will find out soon if I can.

“The hockey lads have been very supportive. They even added an extra football training session into our current programme so I can practice.”

Brothers is currently preparing for the 2010 Commonwealth Games with England but is no stranger to football, having had some success in the sport before.

“At Exeter University I won a tournament with the first eleven football team,” he explained.

“We played some fairly good sides - Exeter City, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers all took part. “I am a massive Robins fan, so this was just too good an opportunity to turn down.”

The nationwide competition has attracted more than 2,500 entries and players will take part in a series of regional and national trials, before a winner is chosen by Town boss Danny Wilson in December.

The winner will sign a professional playing contract with the club and join the first team squad in January.
