KEVIN Amankwaah has vowed to put six months of injury difficulty behind him as he bids to recover his place as Swindon Town’s first-choice right-back.

Amankwaah has featured 15 times for the Robins this season in several short spells in Danny Wilson’s starting 11 without really finding the form which saw him become an integral member of the Town team which reached the League One play-off final last term.

But, having overcome the latest of a series of niggly setbacks, the former Bristol City defender is hopeful of forcing himself above Paul Caddis and Scott Cuthbert for the spot of the right of the back four.

“From playing every game last year and doing well to being in and out this year, being injured with niggly injuries, it’s been quite hard for myself but hopefully I can stay fit now,” he said.

“I’ve always got a good attitude. When I’m injured I try to get back as quickly as possible.

“There’s three right-backs, so whichever one he (Wilson) picks will do a good job and help make sure the team gets three points.

“It’s good competition. You know you have to play well when you’re in because there are people clipping at your heels, but we’ll see what happens.”

Amankwaah’s most recent comeback was far from memorable.

The 28-year-old was part of the Swindon outfit beaten on their own patch by non-league Crawley Town in an FA Cup second round replay 10 days ago.

Amankwaah admits that night was far from acceptable but he believes other performances of late, most notably at the County Ground, show how good Town can be.

“I’ve had my first game back and collectively we didn’t do well because we lost the game but I’m back to full fitness now so hopefully I can push on - my body’s feeling good,” he said.

“We need a win (today). Our last home game against Sheffield Wednesday we did really well so hopefully we can have the same sort of performance as that game and get the three points which are much needed.

“It’s a game that we should be winning really at home and against a team who aren’t really near the top of the table. We need to take advantage of that and put another loss on their CV.”

Meanwhile, Town’s League One trip to Oldham Athletic has been rearranged for Saturday, January 8, kick-off 3pm.

The original match was postponed last weekend due to a frozen pitch at Boundary Park but, with both teams out of the FA Cup, the fixture has been moved to third round weekend.
