PAOLO Di Canio has reiterated his stance that he will only bring in players he is certain want to play for Swindon Town after deciding to drop his interest in Argentinian striker Hugo Bargas yesterday.

Town boss Di Canio had felt the former De Graafschap frontman was keen on a move to the League Two side after he had stated his intent to fly to Italy from his native South America and discuss the possibility of a switch to the County Ground.

However, Bargas never appeared at the training camp in Norcia, instead phoning Di Canio at the last minute to request that the meeting be delayed for one week.

Di Canio had already been made to wait two weeks and rather than waste time waiting on Bargas to make a decision, he informed the 24-year-old he would be looking elsewhere.

“He called me and told me that he wanted one more week and instead to meet in Swindon,” Di Canio told the Advertiser.

“I told him ‘thank you but no’. I have said before that I want people who feel sure they want to come and play for Swindon.”

Bargas is the second striker this week that Di Canio has chosen not to follow up his initial interest in after Christian Cesaretti’s short trial was swiftly ended on Wednesday.

With the start of the season still four weeks away, Di Canio remains confident there is still time for him to finalise his squad before Town face Crewe on August 6.

Set to become his next two permanent recruits are trialists Oliver Risser and Ibrahim Atiku, with an official from Swindon flying in tomorrow with contracts for the pair to sign.

“If they decide different they face a risk because I will punch them,” joked Di Canio. “Now they are here and I know they want to stay. They will sign today. A member of the club will come and they will sign.

“I am very happy because it is a match day for us. Their commitment is very good, they have great quality so I am happy with them both.”
