WESTLECOT Indoor Club recorded two excellent victories last week in national inter-club team championship competitions.

The ladies began with a hard fought 11 shot local derby win over Fairford as they ran-out 75-64 victory in their second round Yetton Trophy match last Thursday.

And then on Sunday the mixed team accounted for midlands side Rugby by 24 shots as they recorded an 89-65 success in their fourth round Egham Trophy tie.

Unusually the home and away legs of the Yetton match against Fairford did not start at the same time. The two matches at Fairford commenced a couple of hours earlier at 10am. In those, Doris Woodley’s rink got to win by seven shots (22-15).

This eased the pressure on Janet Willis’ quartet who went down by two shots.

Carrying a five shot advantage from the away matches Westlecot were favourites with home green advantage to win the tie overall.

Wendy Anderson’s rink took control pulling away to win by 13 shots. It was just as well because in sharp contrast Nichols’ foursome were caught and then out-gunned by Josie Sullivan as her Fairford rink edged in front and eventually claimed a five shot win.

Despite rink honours being shared 2-2, Westlecot took the overall victory by 11 shots.

Westlecot have drawn MidGlos, in round three on Thursday, December 15.

In the Egham Trophy, the foundations for the overall victory were laid at home as the two rinks skipped by Ian Jefferies and Neil Smith recorded 18 and 13 shot victories respectively.

Away in Rugby the matches were much tighter with Westlecot having to endure mixed fortunes.

Dave Snell’s four fought back to win 20-17, but Tom Walkley’s rink collapsed in the latter stages after leading 17-8 at 15 to lose by ten shots.

Westlecot now face an exceptionally tough match in the fifth round after drawing former champions City of Ely (Cambridgeshire).

The match will have to be played on a neutral green on Sunday December 18 because of the distance between the clubs, and have the right to select a halfway venue.

Westlecot’s third round tie in the national Top Club competition at home to Oxford and District will be played on Monday, December 12 (6.30pm).
