FULL TIME Swindon Town 1 Barnet 0 (2-1 on aggregate)

SWINDON Town have booked their place at Wembley after a 1-0 victory in a nervy Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area final second leg clash with Barnet at the County Ground.

Alan Connell’s first half header made sure of a 2-1 aggregate victory, after the striker cushioned home a superb Paul Caddis cross.

Town had a host of chances but failed to make them pay, most notably when Paul Benson was inches away from converting another Caddis cross.

Barnet rarely threatened in the first half but came back into it in the second, but their challenge was all but ended when Charlie Taylor was sent off for what appeared to be an elbow on Oliver Risser.

The County Ground was gripped with nerves during five minutes of injury time, but they held on to secure a famous victory.

Here are the key moments from the match.

4 mins: Town’s first real attack comes to an end as Matt Ritchie’s fierce shot is blocked.

10 mins: Alan Connell goes down in the area after a clash of heads with Barnet captain Mark Hughes, but referee Darren Deadman waves away the penalty appeals.

17 mins: GOAL Town fly forwards down the right hand side and captain Paul Caddis swings in a deep cross, which allows Connell to pick his spot and head the ball back into the opposite corner.

26 mins:Caddis flashes a cross across the box but the outstretched Paul Benson can’t quite get the vital touch.

29 mins: Callum Kennedy fires a free kick just wide after Hughes brings down Ritchie.

33mins: Superb link up play between Simon Ferry and Connell allows Ritchie to fire in a long range shot, but his effort is straight at Dean Brill.

42 mins: Raffa De Vita finds himself in spares and bears down on goal, but he takes one touch too many and his shot from a tight angle is saved by Brill.

HALF TIME

48mins: A long range effort from Sam Deering brings a good save out of Town keeper Wes Foderingham.

54mins: A good pass from Jon Smith sets Caddis free, but the Scot fires in a cross which is claimed by Brill.

59mins: Smith forces Brill into another save with a long range effort.

62 mins: Oliver Risser and De Vita both see shots blocked during a frantic goalmouth scramble.

70 mins: The ball drops to Ritchie on the edge of the area but his vicious drive flies just wide.

82 mins: Barnet start to get a real foothold in the game, and McLeod fires just past Foderingham’s right post.

87mins: RED CARD Barnet go down to ten men after Charlie Taylor goes in late on Oliver Risser, leaving the Namibian in a heap on the turf. Both sides surround the referee.

90+5 The full time whistle goes and Town fans pour onto the pitch.

Dominated in chances 14-6 with 7-2 on target

May have been a damp squib because we didn't need to get out of 1st gear

Sky analysts at the end:
.
Gavin - Were you disappointed by Barnet that they were clearly a level below Swindon?
.
Foster - Yes I was disappointed that once they went behind Barnet seemed to accept defeat as inevitable and never made a fight of it!

A dogged, professional performance against limited opposition but job well done.

Although everyone in the team put in a 7/10 performance my 1-2-3 were

1) J Smith - won virtually everything in the air, played it simple and played a few long balls too. Tackles went in when necessary, looked refreshed from a few games out.

2) Caddis - usual excellent performance and lost count of how many runs he made, plus a great first time cross for the goal.

3) Benson - Ran his socks off, held the ball well and again linked well with Connell, not many direct chances but caused problems.

On a negative note, during the crowd invasion it was an utter disgrace to to see the steward wearing yellow hi-vis jacket 72 assaulting people as they ran on the pitch from the Town End. He ran towards then kicked at least 4 youngsters then an older fan had strong words with him and presumably his supervisor. The steward should never work there again and I hope Sky Sports got that on camera. Disgraceful.

Also was Ferry getting subbed due to actually sh1tting himself on the pitch a first for a Swindon player? Perhaps London Red can confirm? :-)

LR, your first paragraph is a welcome contrast to the statistics you reeled off above. Nobody is going to change their view of a performance on the basis of any statistics. We will all trust our own judgment, based on what we have seen.
.
I don't see people complaining. They are commenting on the standard of the game. For what it's worth, I think we are a good side who played very well for most of the game but occasionally got drawn into kick and rush by a mediocre Barnet side who played well in very occasional patches. People can argue with that view if they like but they won't convince me that I'm right or wrong with any statistics.
.
Sometimes I wonder which is more important to you, statistical analysis or the joy of football for its own sake.

Connell my MOM, ran his socks off, laid the ball of superbly and took his chance really well.

Thought everyone played well. If Da Vita's control had been better on a couple of occassions the score would probably have been more comfortable.

Barnet have improved 1000% since the last time they were at the CG and Saturday will be another difficult match. However, we stifled MacLeod very easily and with Rooney available I believe we can come back with three points.

Bl00dy hell it was freezing last night! there I was watching the gamre from my lofty perch high up on the bar stool of the Plough in Highworth and when I went for a Jimmy at half time I was fair shrammed by a trip to the outside khazi,

From the fish eye lens, thought Devera & Ritchie excelled and Town were worthy if not totally inspiring winners.

Congrats to PDC and the players for making the final and generating some hany revenue dosh-hope the boys go on and win it. I'll probably have a glance at the final on Sky but won't be making the trip to the most souless stadium in the world for a minor minnows cup final -just doesn't do it for me - FA Cup, League or play-off and I would have put my dislike of Wembley aside and gone. Like some of the other old codgers I've been spoilt by past cup exploits and the JPT dosn't do it for me nor did it when it was the LDV and goodness knows before that!

Hope all the young 'uns have a good day out and return with the trophy, and me? well I'd have happily exchanged a Wembley spot for 3 points v the Bees on Saturday if that had been on offer before the game last night.

I wouldn't want to be a bog-roll cup winner in L2 next season!

Hi Wiz nice to see you back and hope all is well. The forum is a friendlier place it seems in recent times and good to see you posting again. Football is the focus at the moment which is great and presumably everyone involved has got bored of the tit for tat multi i.d. rubbish, and the Oxford trolls that post on here are either banned or have finally realised we are the better team at the moment.

Devera man of the match for me. I think he's come on in leaps and bounds since he joined us. Considering he's been playing second fiddle for most of the season, I think that's quite an achievement for him - and probably testament to PDC's management and coaching.

Den - I just get annoyed that no matter what the lads do this year, how well the club is doing in all aspects the posts on these boards are never one to match what is actually happening
.
You say commenting I say complaining - tomato tomato! (doesnt quite work the same in text but I take it you get it)
.
I really can not see what there is to complain/comment negatively about this year - yet day in day out someone is not happy about something
.
As for stats - as PdC said once - they confirm what has actually happened and he stated like me how in one game we had more of the ball, more corners, more chance etc showing we were far and away deserved winners
.
Last night was no different and really a 3-0 or 4-0 scoreline would have not flattered us at all as we were so far superior than Barnet it was not even a contest!
.
The point of my stats was too show that!
.
61% of the ball at half time - simply confirms how one sided it was
.
Then we have the chances created with a clear pen truned down (AGAIN - certainly not evening itself out!!!)
.
Benson had two good chances, RDV had a good chance which he just couldn't get under control plus the goal - compared to what one cross from Barnet which hit the side netting
.
Then in the 2nd half we continued to play some superb football - that ball out wide from Macca to Ritchie who deflected cross fell to Risser who effort was blocked was simply sublime
.
You take all of that into account and to moan at the lads is harsh - all they should have got is praise for a truely professional job!
.
You can only beat what is in front of you! Had Barnet made a game of it we probably would have responded like we always do against the bigger and better sides
.
Barent may have been 1000% better than Sept - but we were 1000% beter than the first leg which was a total dire game with nowhere near the same quality on show as last night!

LR, very few people in the ground would have known that was a cert penalty. It's just one of those things we have to accept. I wasn't far away from it but still couldn't tell how much of Connell's fall was due to a push. I appealed for it of course but I didn't know for sure - and I don't think the ref could have done. There was a time when refs would have given it as a stonewall pen. Nowadays they don't know whether it's a push or a dive.
.
I don't disagree with most of what you say but I still don't think your stats help. If I come away from a game thinking we've played well, no stats will make me change my mind. And what if the team is under the cosh for most of the game and puts in a sterling defensive performance to earn a 0-0 draw? We may well be delighted with that performance - but your stats would say we played badly.
.
What we see for ourselves is all we need to know.

Although everyone in the team put in a 7/10 performance my 1-2-3 were 1) J Smith - won virtually everything in the air, played it simple and played a few long balls too. :-)
COYMR

Yes Devera had a good game and linked well with Macca, thought both anticipated well and won their fair share of headers too. Devera has certainly improved since his initial performances, and to be fair most players look better when they get a run of games - Connell a good example. I still have that Oxford performance of Devera's in my memory but he is improving for sure.

Oi Den,

Your last comment was, for me, the most telling.

You wrote, "What we see for ourselves is all we need to know".
Stone me, I often see things in a game that (almost) no-one else has.
Yep, As long as I've got an 'ole in me arce", my views will never-ever coincide exactly with yours, and I often DON'T agree.

However, I often do.

ZZ -each to their own - it doesn't matter how many stadium's Ive been in IMO the new Wembley is a Sh1t-hole compared to the old one and the Millenium which is great as far as I'm concerned - Have you been to either perchance?

Not too sure what to make of that one Mondeaux! My point was just that stats are not necessarily a good way of assessing performance.
.
I wasn't talking about whether we agree or disagree with each other but I'm glad we don't agree all the time!
Nobody is right all the time either. I'll always point my point as strongly as I can but I'm also always prepared to be convinced by someone else's point of view. I hope it doesn't come across differently. If so, I will watch myself!

Yes mate Wembley(playoff v milwall)
I think the soul of a stadium comes from the supporters within,as you say to each his own,but to demean the trophy as a bog roll or pee pot,i,m an old timer and i,m proud of pdc and swindon, whatever the trophy its the wearing of the shirt that matters, imo.

ZZ I think there is general agreement that the new Wembley is a soulless place devoid of atmosphere - you only have to read the posts on here to see how eveybody is trying to get together to generate some sort of atmosphere - despite their best efforts I don't think it'll come close(due to design) to the noise that reverberated around the old Wembley.

The Millenium by contrast is much more like the old Wembley and if you get the chance or can do so from across the pond - listen to the build up for the Rugby -Wales v Scotland - you'll hear some noise then and perhaps understand where I'm coming from re new Wembley.

I'm also an old timer -first game 1961 and while like everybody else I too am pleased to see PDC & the club doing well, to me ,my opinion, the JPT is a nothing competition. I appreciate that having got to the final there is a trophy to win and revenue generated -all good stuff and I hope we do. But personally the competition itself leaves me cold hence my ppot reference, and as I said on another thread - I'd hate to be the JPT trophy holders still playing in L2 next season. So I'm sorry ZZ I don't see my views on this as arrogant - just different to yours perhaps.

Oi Den,

Profuse apologies, but my post which confused you was, very slightly, fuelled by an over indulgence in the jolly, old vino collapso.

In fact, when i re-read it just now, I'm not sure I know precisely what I meant. In a nutshell, I think I meant that I agree with you more than I disagree.

It's probably best not to respond to anything I post after 10pm (arf-arf)
