THE PAOLO DI CANIO COLUMN: Focusing on the league

It is obvious that I have intelligent players and I have a lot of confidence in my squad, but they have to forget now about Wembley because it is a stupid thing to think about.

We should think about Wembley before the game but concentrate on the league.

We do not need to think about Wembley because Wembley is there at the end of March, so we need to do our best in the league to put ourselves in the best possible position to get promoted.

We do not need to focus too much energy on the cup because our big challenge is the league and game by game we are getting closer to the top.

In the end we want to win the league now so that needs to be our focus.

For the players it is very crucial because the maximum they can do is win the championship, and they are very close to the top of the league and playing very well.

But they can also win the cup, and this is a very crucial moment for them in their career because it is a massive game and all of the nation will watch it on the television.

It is a real good chance to step forward and take the opportunity to become a better player.

Their fitness is going to be essential from now on but has anyone noticed how we seem to have an absence of recurring hamstrings this season?

Just had a check through and we've got two games to be re-arranged:
- Burton (H)
- Aldershot (A)
Looking at fixture dates we have the following free Tuesdays:
Tues 28th Feb - Not a favourite as we'll have played Sat-Tue-Sat-Tue-Sat already and a free week before the Pox on the 3rd would be preferred.
.
Tues 13th Mar - again not ideal as we have Tues fixtures either side of that week but preferred to the 28th Feb.
.
Tues 27th - two days after Wembley - A big NO THANK YOU!
.
Then we're into mid-April for the only other free mid-week dates:
Tues 17th, 24th April and May 1st

My attention was grabbed by this lack of mid-week availability on top of the forecast for the end of the week as I'm betting on the game at Barnet being called off on Sat plus Crawley (H) on the Tues could also be an issue.

Brings back memories of bad weather in my childhood which resulted in a number of clubs playing Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday towards the end of the season. We could end up with a backlog and a very tired bunch of players!! Hope the fitness training pays off! Still, its great not to be leaking goals in the last ten minutes of games anymore. On the Kerrouche thing, presumably Oxford will pay part of his wages which will help us. I cannot see them going up, they have hush-hush money worries I am led to believe and even heard that the club really wanted Constable to leave as they needed the money...only hearsay but interesting nevertheless. Why else did they sell their allocation of tickets for the Town game so incredibly early?? As it turns out, our strikers look good and we wouldnt have needed him.
