CALLUM Kennedy expects to sit down with the Swindon Town hierarchy to discuss his future with the club this week, and the left-back is desperate to secure himself a new deal at the County Ground.

Left-back Kennedy, who progressed through the Robins’ youth system to sign his first professional contract with the Wiltshire outfit in 2007, is amongst the club’s longest serving players but sees his current deal expire this summer.

Having been in and out of favour with manager Paolo Di Canio over the course of the campaign - Kennedy made 23 appearances in 2011/12 - a question mark looms large over the 22-year-old’s future.

But the defender remains hopeful he will be handed extended terms by the Town management.

“(My contract) expires this season so we’ll have to sit down and talk about what happens now,” Kennedy told the Advertiser.

“We’ve just been waiting until the end of the season and then we’ll see what’s being said then. Probably within the next few days we’ll know more about what’s going to be happening.

“I’d like to stay. I thoroughly enjoy playing for the club, we’ve got brilliant team spirit and I think everyone’s seen that this season and I’d like to be here.

“It’s a good club, it’s going in the right direction.

“Hands-down I’m a much better player because of him (Di Canio), just through the intensity of training and how much he makes you concentrate.

“That alone has helped me improve 10-fold and I’m thankful for that.”

Should Kennedy secure a new contract with Town, he intends to arrive back at pre-season in July in near-peak physical condition.

“Obviously we’ll go away, have our rest and we’ll be given a programme that we’ll fulfil in the summer,” he said.

“You have to make sure you come back with good fitness before pre-season even starts so you’re ready for it and then hit the ground running when pre-season starts.

“If you give yourself two weeks off and give yourself a complete rest and then get going again gradually it’s not too bad.

“I’d rather do that than hang around doing nothing anyway.”
