SWINDON TOWN: Timlin wishes Town well in League One

MICHAEL Timlin might not be joining Swindon in League One next season but the midfielder has wished his former employers well.

Timlin looked set to play a key role under boss Paolo Di Canio and started the first game of the season against Crewe, but was then loaned to Southend at the end of August before a permanent move was agreed in January.

The ex-Fulham man latterly missed out on a return to League One himself as Southend were sunk by Crewe in the play-off semi-final, but he hopes Swindon enjoy 2012/13 in a higher division.

“Once we got relegated from League One, the ambition was to go straight back up and after (interim chairman) Jeremy Wray made the appointment of Di Canio, my thoughts were that we had a good chance of doing that,” said Timlin.

“It ended up happening so good for them and Di Canio, who has done wonders there. They have done incredibly well.

“Since I left they have been the team I’ve played against who are definitely the most accomplished as a whole, and that comes down to the work Di Canio put in with us in pre-season.”

Timlin also insisted there was no ill feeling from himself towards Swindon despite the hasty nature of his departure.

“I was disappointed with how it happened and that’s just what happens in football sometimes. I won’t hold any grudges with anyone,” he added.

“I still have a good relationship with DI Canio and I sent my best wishes to him when I heard about his mum passing away, and then I did the same when they won promotion.

“Southend were interested in taking me in the summer and it was a tough decision to stay at Swindon, because my family wanted me to go but I was looking forward to working with Di Canio.

“But now I’ve got the next best thing which was to be at Southend with all my family and I’m really enjoying it.”

Always rated Timlin as a player even though he sometimes went in a bit heavy for a challenge. Seemed like a nice bloke as well. Honest and hard working. Wish him all the best for the future.

" sometimes went in a bit heavy for a challenge" ? The game is still evolving but players of yesteryear like Dave McKay would go in heavy every time ! There was no time to dive !

Lazy reporting. Can't wait to see what Paynter thinks, or indeed Joe Butler etc. Am not interested in what Timlin thinks. Move on, please.

Shame that Sarfend didn't get promotion, but too many of Luggy's BBQ's took it's toll.

I put TimliN in same boat as Ferry ,was'nt really fancied at start of season and we all know how Simon responded . I actually think we were too hasty shipping him out especially with the hind site of some of the failures that came in .With PDC training regime he would have been ok IMHO.

Great guy Timlin, the kind you'd be happy to see get a back room staff job at Swindon at the end of his career... top all round bloke. all the best Tims!

i always thought Timlin was a bit hard done by with us and iwish him all the best with Southend and he always had a good rapport with the fans.

Always get a good reception whenever he comes back to the CG as i think the majority of fans liked him and he was a good bloke.

There is clearly something unsaid in all this. As most of us thought at the time, there must have been some kind of fall out, but it's good to see that there are no hard feelings from Timlin.

Spilt milk and all that but I still think he was needed in the play-off against Millwall

I think he is a better player than some of the other midfielders brought in subsequently so think like Den there must have been something more than meets the eye. I wish Timlin all the very best for the future at Southend. He was a good professional for us and deserves success. From the sounds of it he has been one of Southend's best players this season. Good luck Michael.

Never understood why we let him go, especially as we were so light in midfield at times. Good player and good bloke.

smirg kcab,

I'm with you on that one. I've no opinion on him as a geezer/fella/bloke as I only met him, very briefly, once.
However, I did see him play a fair few times and was never impressed.
The most flattering description I'd give was that he was "ponderous".
