SWINDON TOWN: Keeper search could start after seven subs rule

Paolo Di Canio Paolo Di Canio

SWINDON manager Paolo Di Canio has hinted that he may look to bring in a goalkeeper after the Football League agreed to revert to seven subsitutes from next season.

Di Canio’s options between the sticks are fairly limited at present, with number one Wes Foderingham supported by first-year professional Leigh Bedwell, while both Phil Smith and Mark Scott have been released after their contracts with the Robins expired.

Mattia Lanzano still has a year to run on his current deal, but the young Italian is unlikely to feature again for Swindon after struggling to settle in England following his switch from USD Gavorrana last summer.

And while Luke McCormick is set to train with Town following his release from prison later this month, there is no guarantee that the former Plymouth stopper will ever be handed a pro deal at the County Ground.

Football League members voted to increase the number of options available from the bench from five to seven at their AGM in Portugal this week, and Di Canio recognised the need to reinforce his ranks accordingly.

“In terms of the quality we need for the future and in terms of the physical integrity, we need players because from next year there will be seven players on the bench,” he said.

“I will bring every time a goalkeeper. I want a healthy goalkeeper, that has no problem when he kicks the ball and goes out for one month.”

Meanwhile, the Town boss has admitted that the discussions regarding the club’s and his own future, which preceded a two-year extension to his County Ground contract, have stalled his business in the transfer market.

But with significant backing now in place, Di Canio is ready to immerse himself in the pandemonium of the close season.

“We have a budget to build, in my opinion, a good team - otherwise I wouldn’t sign,” he said.

“You know me, I’m not crazy, I’m not here for employment. I was ready to sign for less money to have more budget, because to have success you can have a bit less money.

“It’s better to have more money to spend on players because the players go on the field. The quality gives you victories. The players and a good squad gives you the chance to go up and up and become one of the best managers and improve as a manager.

“We have the right budget to build something positive. It’s obvious that we have to be quick otherwise all the players go everywhere.”

There's one thing I don't like about all this. It sounds like pdc decided if he didn't get the backing he would have walked away. Otherwise he still had a year on his contact and still should have been planning for next season. I'm not having a dig at him but this is how it sounds. Long may he be here.

Toshman........on the face of it it may look worrying but this has got to be the negotiating 'tool' which lands the best of both Worlds ie money for players and money for Paolo. Lots of clubs, unless they are stinking rich, have the same methods of 'bargaining' for position between managers and Boards.
If Paolo's happy then I'm sure he will make us all happy with another exciting, competitive football season. Bring it on........

No problem with Paolo wanting backing to continue, but the season did finish some time ago, and we knew we were promoted with games to go, so not sure why the delay if the budget available was the factor. Still it's sorted now so looking forward to some arrivals!

Ever fan knew this, he said many times he would walk if not given the backing from the board.thats called ambition which the board have now, and never had this when fitton was at the realm. Jwray put all his eggs in one pan and we had the largest omelette ever.

It's not that simple to simply go we knew weeks ago why not agree a budget then
.
The board would have had to do a detailed plan on finances to estimate what it would cost them as every year it costs them millions!
.
ST sales would have been a major factor so maybe they needed to see how they were going?
.
Also if people have not notice we and the rest of Europe are back in a recession - our money men who are from the financial world will be seriously hit by this
.
That obviously will impact their decision on how much they want to basically "throw away" on the club
.
All is sorted now PdC has signed up (hinting at less money) and we are going to make an assault on L1
.
Only 2 clubs have been active so far and I would say we have "missed out" on one - which actually had nothing to do with the delay as we refused to pay his demands!
.
PFA list has lots of good players on it every position we need and we probably are also looking at cash purchases too - so fully confident by pre-season we will have 5 decent signings which will make us look very competitive

Spot on Grim,Paolo won't waste his time at a club with no ambition!if the board were happy to P1ss around trying to stay in Div1,Paolo was off!Paolo wants success, the fans want success and now we know the Board want success,so show Paolo the Money!!!!!!!!

with regards to this 'keeper situation, I maintain that we should have kept phil smith... he did make the odd mistake, but he was ok as a back up. i just don't see why a better 'keeper would sign, just to sit on the bench...

i'm sure i'll be proven wrong and we'll get a decent 'keeper in. however, whoever we get, I never want to see them play - would rather wes played the whole season!

I think the delay was due to possibly Fitton selling his share in the club to another or exsisting shareholder. PDC would clearly have stayed another year anyway as he said he was but obviously now with the extra investment he can make an assault on promotion instead of midtable....

TheDukeOfBanbury says...
9:15am Sat 2 Jun 12

I think the more "silent" Board members who are the backers are enjoying the PDC experience as much as we are. Spoke to JW on a few occasions last seasons and he was so confident that PDC would sign therefore I was never in doubt. He was so relaxed and was never going to push PDC whilst he was engineering the escape from that awful Div 2.

There is a plan behind the scenes and we are sharing the good times once again that often seemed possible again.

Jeremy Wray stated quite catagorically the Luke McCormick is not being paid by STFC.
If and it's a big IF it Swindon did sign this player then they would be geting a bl00dy good keeper.

The adver reported post Ryder we used a network of 5 former lower league managers which one was Nicky Forster
.
The other 4 though were not named
.
They were the group which recommended Smith and Connell
.
Though this year PdC probably has also formed his own list via watching games - just like he said to Wray get me Rooney and we'll win the league

On this very subject, I wrote this http://t.co/vNjGxODp on 5 vs 7 subs after the football league reverted back to 7 after one season.

Written for The Washbag so specific focus on Swindon Town Football Club but possibly worth a read for any football league club supporter.

Glad we have Wes Foderingham playing for our club, hopefully we won't need to use another goal keeper. Big fan Wes keep it up!
