Howell makes his move in Sweden

BROOME Manor professional David Howell forced his way up the leaderboard with a second successive two under par round at the Nordea Masters yesterday.

Howell began his campaign in Sweden with a level par round on Wednesday before shooting two under on Thursday to make the cut, and repeated the feat yesterday to leave himself four under for the tournament with one round remaining.

The 36-year-old got off to the best possible start at the Bro Hof Slott Golf Club, as he birdied the par five first backed up by pars at two and three.

Howell picked up another shot at four as he birdied the first par three of the round, but after a par on the fifth he dropped a shot at the sixth to slip back to three under.

But a good par on seven got him back on track, and the Swindon man hauled himself back to four under with a birdie at eight ahead of a par on the final hole before the turn.

Howell started the back nine with two quick pars, before picking up another shot at the 12th with a birdie on the shortest par five on the course.

A par at 13 followed, but Howell dropped a shot on 14 before paring the final four holes to end two under for the round, and four under for the tournament.

Despite enjoying three solid rounds in Scandinavia, Howell is still well off the pace of leader Lee Westwood who carded a four under par 68 to top the leaderboard on 16 under.

The world number three sits three shots clear of fellow Englishman Ross Fisher, who in turn is one ahead of home player Peter Hanson.
