Ladies' Trophy hopes are over
6:00am Saturday 7th July 2012 in Sport
WILTSHIRE Ladies’ hopes of success in this year’s revamped Johns Trophy were ended as they lost their last group match to Warwickshire.
They needed to beat the Midlands side last Saturday in the inter-county championship in their third and final game to win their section - West Group A - and qualify for the quarter-finals. But they were thwarted as they lost out 126-104 away at Norgren, Shipston-on-Stour, only scoring six points.
It meant Somerset, who Wiltshire thumped 124-94 (20-2) in their opening game, topped the group and reached the last eight after a 115-102 (18-4) win over Gloucestershire in their final group match.
Somerset finished on 38 points, Gloucestershire on 37 with Wiltshire third on 31 and Warwickshire last on 26.
The Wiltshire selectors have opted for the same eight players and two rinks that beat both Cornwall 47-22 and Somerset 42-35 in previous rounds for the regional final of the Walker Cup at Taunton tomorrow.
Local players Alison Fail (Purton) and Linda Kingston (Highworth) are included in the rinks skipped respectively by Alex Jacobs and Carol Grenfell.
In the national inter-county double rinks championship Wiltshire have been drawn against Herefordshire in the first west regional semi-final at Taunton on Sunday, July 15.
The South West Counties Ladies side made it three wins out of three at Devizes on Wednesday.
Wiltshire followed up successes in their opening matches against Cornwall and Somerset with a 108-99 victory over Worcestershire.
They took the honours on three of the six rinks to collect 16 points out of a possible 22 and take their impressive start to the SWCL campaign to 53 out of 66 points.
Elsewhere, despite leading at the halfway mark Wiltshire were beaten by Berkshire in their friendly match at Pewsey.
