SWINDON TOWN: Preston surprised by big win - Monakana
6:00am Monday 3rd September 2012 in Sport By Andy Warren
PRESTON winger Jeffrey Monakana admitted the North End players were surprised to come away from their clash with Swindon with a 4-1 victory.
The former Arsenal trainee put in an impressive display as he consistently attacked full-backs Jay McEveley and Joe Devera down either flank.
Akpo Sodje, Nicky Wroe, Scot Beavon and John Welsh scored the goals as the Lilywhites claimed an easy victory over a lacklustre Town side, and Monakana admitted he and his teammates were not expecting such an easy win.
“It was a good game and there was a great atmosphere there, so to get the three points was brilliant,” he said.
“We were playing against the champions of League Two and we knew it was going to be a tough game, and they did play some good football even though we won. They have some good players and Di Canio has obviously instilled some good things in them, so it makes our victory even better.”
Swindon goalkeeper Wes Foderingham was hauled off by manager Paolo Di Canio after Town conceded two early goals, but Monakana was too busy concentrating on his own game to notice what was going on near the visitors’ bench.
“I wasn’t too surprised because I was too busy thinking about what we were doing, and our result was the main thing.
“We are a new team and this result is huge for us, and what we need to do now is carry this on. This will give us confidence.”
