Bennett wants a tough fight

LAWRENCE Bennett claims he doesn’t want any easy fights as he aims to reach his full potential as a professional boxer.

The cruiserweight has already impressed in his first two fights within the paid ranks and Bennett believes he has a lot more to offer.

Bennett will be back in action next month when he fights on Keith Mayo Promotions show on Saturday, October 6 at Swindon’s Oasis Leisure Centre.

At 29 years of age, Bennett also accepts time is not necessarily on his side and is keen to keep as busy as possible. “Time is not against me as such but I am 29 and I want to stay as active as possible,” said Bennett.

“I need to get the experience as quickly as I can so I can improve as quickly as possible. “I’d like a tough fight next because I want to bring something else to the table and see where I am at.

“I’ll fight anyone at the end of the day.

“I can counter punch and I can come forward and I am learning all the time.”

Bennett entered the unknown when he travelled to Sweden at the last minute to fight home favourite Stefan Schallengruber back in April.

But despite all the odds staked against Bennett in Sweden he upset the form book to clinch an impressive points victory.

Bennett added: “I’m not fussed about opponents really.

“You can only talk yourself out of a fight if you worry about things.

“I went to Sweden with no preparation and no fear.

“I am confident in my own ability and that is all that mattered.” Bennett used to be a talented athlete but his inexperience cost him a career in the sport.

He admits he lacked the determination and was lazy during his athletics career and vows not to make the same mistake as a professional boxer. “I was a talented runner and who knows what I could have achieved there but I was lazy and lacked the determination,” he said.

“I’ve learnt the hard way. You can have talent, but talent alone will not get you anywhere.

“Now I have the right attitude and I know this is my last chance to become a professional athlete so I intend to make the most of it.

“Ricky Hatton wasn’t the best boxer in the world but he trained hard and had heart. I love people like that.

“I won’t leave anything in the locker.

“So long as I give this my best then I will be able to walk away happy whether I win a title or not.

“I refuse to be one of those people in the pub talking about what they could have achieved.”

Also on the bill featuring Bennett will be Kelvin Young who competes in an English middleweight title eliminator fight against Tony Hill.

There will also be a debut for former Walcot amateur boxer Danny O’Reilly who makes his first appearance as a professional.
