SWINDON TOWN: Foderingham isn't alone in being substituted

WES Foderingham is not the only goalkeeper to be taken off by his manager for reasons other than injury.

Plenty of stoppers have found their time on the field cut short, as our whistle-stop tour explains.

• JENS Lehmann might have gone on to become on of the world’s top goalkeepers, but he was twice hauled off due to poor displays in his playing career.

The first was in his homeland of Germany in 1993, when he let in three unanswered goals for Schalke against Bayer Leverkusen and was substituted at half time.

The second occasion was with AC Milan at Cagliari in 1998, when Lehmann gifted the hosts an opener and brought down Roberto Muzzi to concede a penalty.

MIlan coach Alberto Zaccheroni immediately replaced the custodian with Sebastiano Rossi, who saved Muzzi's spot-kick.

• CAMBRIDGE went four goals down to Ashford inside the first half hour in 1984, resulting in gloveman Nigel Ashman being withdrawn.

One of Ashman’s central defenders donned the goalkeeping jersey and from both a defensive and attacking point of view, the decision worked, as Cambridge pulled it back to 4-3.

• MANAGER Fred Osam-Duodu might have wished he hadn’t taken off stopper James Nanor in Ghana’s 2001 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

With the Super Eagles 3-0 up, Osam-Duodu benched James Nanor and replaced him with Osei Boateng.

Disaster struck when Boateng was sent off within two minutes, forcing skipper Emmanuel Kuffour to take over between the sticks and keep the damage down to 3-0.

• FORMER Manchester United goalkeeper Paul Rachubka had made several high-profile mistakes in the period before Leeds took on Blackpool at the back end of 2011.

He started anyway, but promptly dropped three clangers that put his side 3-0 down, before being replaced by rookie stopper Alex Cairns at half time.

Shortly afterwards, Rachubka was shipped out to Tranmere on loan .

• ZAIRE’S Mwamba Kazadi was brought off in the 1974 World Cup group game against Yugoslavia having conceded three goals in the first 20 minutes.

The first act of his replacement Dimbi Tubilandu was to pick the ball out of his net, which he did another five times in the 9-0 defeat.

• PERUVIAN keeper Jose Acasuzo was substituted after just 13 minutes of his side’s World Cup play-off against Chile.

The first shot went through his legs and two more efforts easily beat him in the 5-3 loss. That was Acasuzo’s final cap for his country.
