SWINDON TOWN: On best behaviour for Paolo

KEEP CALM: Paolo Di Canio KEEP CALM: Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio knows exactly what tonight’s derby clash with Oxford means to the Swindon Town fans, but the Italian has urged the travelling supporters to stay out of trouble at the Kassam Stadium.

Town travel up the A420 this evening for the two sides’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash, looking to avenge the two defeats they suffered in League Two last season.

Di Canio knows the emotions the Town fans will be feeling in the lead up to kick-off, having passionately followed Lazio as a youngster and consistently attended their derbies with city rivals Roma.

The Town boss still feels the same emotions he did as a fan now he is a manager, and is keen for the Town faithful to enjoy the game without getting into trouble.

“I will work hard with pain in my stomach and my heart. I didn’t sleep all night (after the Preston game) thinking about what kind of performance we made,” he said.

“Obviously this is more because I know what it means for the fans, how they enjoy it when we win and send out from this competition the rivals but it’s important that we play with maximum desire and passion.

“Behave well and stay there, enjoy the moment, the passion because it is a different game. You can joke with each other, blame the colours because this is typical, send some funny message. I know because I used to do the same.

“Afterwards, what happens later, there is nothing to do –nothing to do. I know the anger in the rivalry can sometimes go over in the crowd with the honour you have for your colour but it’s not good.

“I don’t want to invite to say bad words but it is normal, sometimes someone has to put their anger out otherwise you are perfect and then one day you’re going to become a killer.

“Behave with your opponent in the right way, joke with them but at the end we celebrate, joke like they did last year. They go sad back home, I hope this, and then we’ll see what’s going on.”

"Otherwise you are then one day you're going to become a killer." Think I know what he means although if so, I'm meeting him more than half way! Genius. Said it before but PDC and Gordon Strachan are kindred spirits in craziness and entertainment :-)

You've just got to love and admire PDCs total passion... Anyone know how many tickets we sold. Heard it was only 1,200 which if so is p1ss poor for a derby match regardless of what ever trophy it may be...

We were only allocated about that many, weren't we?

We we're allocated around the 1900 mark! Ive got my ticket but priced at 19 quid for adults for a JPT game regardless if its a derby game is daylight robbery!!

I know what Paolo is trying to say and personally I cant wait to get to the game and start the verbal abuse! Unfortunately some mindless, usually drunk and small minority of fans seem to have to step over the line of rivalry and start a fight or something of that nature.

If tonight passes without any arrests then I will eat my wooly hat!

Dont get me wrong I love the banter, rivalry and passion between oxford and swindon but some fans seem to fancy themselves in thier own version of green street and go over the top!

to be fair to us, our fans weren't really that bad at all last time. It was the Oxford fans who were attempting to break the police line, throwing coins, ect, ect.

The only trouble with STFC fans really started after the idiots in charge of the police there decided to keep us penned in like animals for 30+ mins after the game, no announcement prior to the game ending, no care for the boy next to me who had asthma for a good 15 mins, no care for any of the older supporters who struggled to stand for that length of time.

Then the idiots made us walk through a car park full of Oxford fans to get to our bloody car!!

Slightly biased recollection there. I remember plenty from Swindon doing their best to cause as much trouble as possible.

In an ideal world no-one should be prevented from going to a football match if they behave themselves but realistically, there are some that aren't safe for vulnerable (or any decent, for that matter) people. Didn't go to a town v Oxford game with my dad until I was about twelve for the very reason he didn't want to take a young child in there and risk anything happening. Same for the elderly, they shouldn't be afraid to go to a match but you can see why they may, in fixtures like this. Sad but at least football's moved on a bit in the past thirty odd years and at least seems to be more of a family game now.
