Woe for Westlecot

WESTLECOT crashed out of the Wiltshire Men’s Four Rink League play-off semi-finals last Sunday, writes DAVE EATON.

The reigning champions and winners of the top county team competition for nine of the past 10 years were well beaten, going down 90-47 to Holt at Devizes.
 

The heavy defeat at the hands of Holt came as a very big surprise as there were only two changes to the team that beat Wootton Bassett in last year’s four rink league play-off final.
 

And three quarters of the side thumped Holt 89-56 in the 2010 final at Wootton Bassett winning on all four rinks.
 

This time around though Holt gained revenge taking the honours on all four rinks, with Westlecot conceding after only 72 ends, to book their place in only their third ever final.
 

The final between Holt and Spencer Moulton will be played tomorrow afternoon (Sunday 2.30pm) at Devizes.
 

Highworth, the other local club in the semi-finals, fared no better as they lost on all four rinks at Chippenham Town when beaten 113-56 by Spencer Moulton (Bradford on Avon).
 

It was a tall order for Highworth as they have only ever reached one final before, and that was way back in 1976 but still a fine achievement to reach the last four.
 

Highworth lost very heavily on one rink against Spencer Moulton but in two others came close to taking the honours.
 

Richard Young’s foursome dropped six shots on the last two ends to lose 19-21 despite leading 16-12 at 17 ends. Robbie Allen’s quarter conceded seven shots on the last four ends to lose 20-16 although leading 16-13 at 17 ends.

Rink 2: Gary Jackson, Des Rideout, Paul Stokes & Mike Jackson lost to Matt Tucker, Robbie Jeffreys, Martin Oliver & Justin Davis 10-20 (18 ends). Rink 3: Craig Hatherall, Paul Sloman, Michael Richards & Graham Hatherall lost to Matt Snook, Malcolm Barker, Graham Archard & Keith Bailey 11-26 (20 ends).
