SWINDON & DISTRICT LEAGUE: Spectrum miss two penalties in defeat
6:00am Tuesday 11th September 2012 in Sport
SWINDON Spectrum threw away a one-goal half-time lead and missed two penalties to slip to defeat to Lower Stratton in the Swindon & District League Premier Division on Saturday.
Spectrum had raced into the ascendancy when Mark Whyburd fired home in the first period and should have gone further in front just before the break, only to fail from the spot.
History repeated itself in the second half when again the hosts misfired from 12 yards and they were made to pay, as Stratton seized on their good fortune to produce a late fightback and canter to a 5-1 win.
Elsewhere in the division, AFC Globe enjoyed a fairly comfortable 2-0 win against Village Inn.
Dom Mazzotta stroked home a penalty to put Globe in front and Michael Corcoran completed a fine, flowing move to secure all three points for the home side.
Steve Winchcombe netted four times as Auto Engine Tune easily dispatched Highworth 6-0.
Ben Keating and Wayne Savoury also registered for the hosts in a simple win.
Queensfield benefited from a DJC Marlborough own goal, as well as efforts from Michael Jack, Kelvin Spencer and Ryan Fry, as they saw off DJC 4-2.
In Division One, Larry’s Plaice were hit by a late Chiseldon comeback as the two sides drew 2-2.
Larry’s were two goals to the good at the break thanks to strikes from Antosh Nowicki and Scott Bailey but Chiseldon did not lay down and die and rescued a point with goals from Alex Taylor and Jon Davis.
Old Town United appeared to have handed all three points to Ramsbury on a plate when they found themselves trailing 2-1 having conceded two penalties to their hosts.
However, Steve Nesbitt’s brace and James Relen’s effort turned the game in their favour as Old Town emerged 3-2 victors.
A double from Jamie Watts proved critical as Ferndale WMC beat Swindon Spitfires by the odd goal in seven.
Jay Dixson and Danny Knight also found the net for Ferndale in their 4-3 win.
Bassett Bulldogs slipped up 4-2 at home to Sportz Central.
