SWINDON TOWN: Miller excited by Roberts' return
6:00am Thursday 13th September 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Swindon Town's Gary Roberts
TOMMY Miller thinks Gary Roberts’ impending return from injury will be a huge moment in Swindon Town’s season.
Roberts, who the Advertiser understands is still a fortnight away from a return to full fitness as he recovers from a lower leg problem, has yet to make his debut for the Robins since arriving in Wiltshire from Huddersfield over the summer.
Miller played with the winger at Huddersfield and Ipswich, and the 33-year-old knows exactly what Roberts can offer Town when he is fit and available.
“Gary Roberts has been coming on very well. He’s a key player,” he told the Advertiser.
“He did very well for Huddersfield over the years, a great crosser of the ball so it will give us a big boost to have him back in the squad and back on the training pitch.
“It adds to the squad. The squad’s a big squad as it is and there’s competition for places and everyone’s got to be on their toes mentally and physically because the manager’s not afraid to change players if we don’t perform.
“He can quite easily change six or seven players to we have to be on guard and we’ve got to start on Saturday getting back to winning ways, getting a positive result and a positive performance.”
With Matt Ritchie and James Collins returning to the matchday squad for the home defeat to Leyton Orient last weekend, and Troy Archibald-Henville closing in on a first-team comeback after his knee injury, Swindon are almost back to full strength as they bid to end a three-match losing streak at Carlisle on Saturday.
The Robins suffered a similar fate at the start of last season, when they lost four of their first five league matches under Paolo Di Canio, but Miller revealed the Italian is using the experiences of 12 months ago to haul his team out of their current slump.
“We’ve spoken about that. The manager went over things, what happened last season in a similar sort of period and they put things right then,” he said, “They worked on things on the training ground and that’s what we’re going to be doing this week - working hard and getting back to basics and I’m sure it will come right again.”

By all accounts I read, he did have a bit of a mare at Preston and assume that's the main reason he seems to be out of it at the moment. He made some useful contribrutions last season and if he's training hard, I'm sure it won't go unnoticed by Paolo, everyone deserves another chance and I hope he get's his as he is capable of winning games.
It will be good to have Roberts fit and able to start although I have heard he is prone to injury. De Vita has been one of the stand out performers for us so far this season so will be an interesting battle. Miller is going to have to battle to keep his place too. Hope the show gets back on the road with a win at Carlisle. Too early to talk of a "slump"- every team goes through patches of poor results. COYR

Such a shame DeVita's chance on the half volley never went in, would have been goal of the month for me with that build up play.

Rooney has been disappointing. Has had chances but fails to deliver, particularly away from home.
Roberts is a recognised winger and against Palace looked a very good player.
We have never been as strong on the left as the right and hoping that Roberts provides the threat that Ritchie does................
Apologies for mentioning it again but its obvious we miss Caddis in the Ritchie, Ferry triangle. Now that is a loss.
Would be very happy with 4 points from the next 2 games and hoping that Paolo has put his arms around some of the players this week in an attempt to bring back the missing confidence.
No need to panic yet.

Rooney at Preston was absolute dire, and have been when ever he has started. Also he came into our stand after half time and sat with us, not sure paolo told him but maybe he did with fodders. Don't think he will ever play again for us if paolo didn't tell him to join us. The whole saga of the Preston game certainly embarrassed the fans/players/board. Even the prestons fans was taking the pee.

Loan out or send back, both rooneys, ward,Navarro

I know he was out for a while at Udders after Douglas broke his arm - but that is a bit of a freak injury compared to a reoccurring isses like say Michael Owen

He played 164 games in those 4 years at Udders - so thats 41 a season on average even with that lengthy lay off

Also ward played against a team with no ambition, no motivation in the final if I can remember.
As I said before wards debut was the worst I've seen in 41 years and I also said a Rooney was pants at poxford and after watching another embarrassing show against l o. Found him in the same bracket as pericrap and Dossevi

Really think we need to give a few of these players a chance - we didn't sign them because they're **** and they didn't become **** overnight - implies to me they still have something to give.
If Ritchie had a few bad games when he first joined, would we have been looking to get rid of him so hastily? What would the cost have been to us if we had (promotion last season for one, possibly). Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater is all I'm saying.
Criticism of Adam Rooney and Ward I find particularly harsh - Ward has a sterling record, and Rooney was played once out of position, and once where he missed when clean through, so say. However if you look at the replays the defender was so tight on him he really only had the option to shoot with his right, with his body in a bad position to do so. Reckon some come straight from the match and have a rant - let's face it, you only get an impression when you're there, which is why we all end up with different opinions. Once you've gone over the replays from a better angle you always get a better idea of what's gone on.

Ritchie did have some poor games when he first arrived - his first loan spell was a bit of a disaster - so when he arrived the 2nd time he was described as a "panic signing" - Now look at him!

Why did paolo play flint? Because he watched the video over and over and thought do you know what yes ward was poor and it was his fault for the goal.
As for Navarro his he better than ferry/bostock? Never in a billion years.
I must say tho Roberts is pure quality a great signing providing he stays fit which is a big ask.

Rooney arrived as one of the fittest at Gills but could match anyone at STFC

Troy has declared himself fit - but was left out as PdC and Co don't agree!

I'm sure in the next few weeks when he new boys reach the STFC level of fitness they will start to feature more

We'll soon see who is right - but as I said when he signed Ward will be a regular and I expect him to be captain come Jan when he signs on perm

Navarro can't be compared to Ferry and Bostock as they are cometely different players

It's like comparing Caddis and Flint

Navarro is here to do the unnoticed dogs body job to allow Ferry to dazzle

It's like Klinsmann said about Germany in the Euros - no one was prepared to look "bad" in order to help the team - that role is often overlooked

It's like Klinsmann said about Germany in the Euros - no one was prepared to look "bad" in order to help the team - that role is often overlooked . Miller is the one who is like Ferry - both are meant to be the creative force

All I said was I think Ward didn't play against Orient due to fitness
.
The bits about Caddis and Rooney are true and came from the horses mouths
.
Mike it takes more than one game to determine a sides fitness - or lack of - I think 99% of people will agree our team are super fit
.
You only have to listen to the players to determine that!

mike1990 wrote:Well Mike they did do Brentford with a scuffy goal after the Bees dominate most of the game. Fair play to them Rus Slade havegot them playing the way he thinks is best for them given limited skill levels. With regards fitness levels, please take injto account we played 3 games in 6 days, (2 away from home), Orient had a complete week to rest, I'm not saying they had a game plan on the day that worked for them, but I don't agree with you it was a fitness issue, other than the fact we showed signs of wearyness after too many games in too short of period.
London Red wrote:London Red you seem to think PDC's team is super fit, well after watching Orient out run us,also sharper and faster,we don't look that fit to me,will be interesting to Orient tonight,to see if they can do Brentford,as easy as they done us.
It's probably down to fitness
.
As we have seen Caddis is not fit enough for us but is Birmingham!
.
Rooney arrived as one of the fittest at Gills but could match anyone at STFC
.
Troy has declared himself fit - but was left out as PdC and Co don't agree!
.
I'm sure in the next few weeks when he new boys reach the STFC level of fitness they will start to feature more
.
We'll soon see who is right - but as I said when he signed Ward will be a regular and I expect him to be captain come Jan when he signs on perm

London Red wrote:Brentford lacked quality and had no idea in the final third, although they had the better of the game in my eyes both teams looked no better than some of the teams we played last season, we can all still have a very good season and (fingers crossed) get out of this lge but some of our fans thought we would just cast aside other clubs in this lge due to us signing decent players and the euphoria of last season,we need to be more patient and understand that mistakes will be made, confront it,sort it and move on without shattering players and ours the fans confidence. Many a team have tried to buy there way out of a lge,i believe it takes a little bit more than that.
Orient did a job on Brentford too - another 1-0 win for them!

In the brief time he was on the field with Williams they linked well and I dont believe it was any coincidence that we had our best chances after he was introduced.
pdc does wot he wants wrote:I'm sure you ment the ward balls up? Also ward played against a team with no ambition, no motivation in the final if I can remember. As I said before wards debut was the worst I've seen in 41 years and I also said a Rooney was pants at poxford and after watching another embarrassing show against l o. Found him in the same bracket as pericrap and Dossevi Onwards and upwards Not harsh I just live in the real world.SeanG92 wrote:although i didnt like the way ward kept hoofing the ball up the pitch he looks very solid defending he didnt give oxford a sniff untill the flint balls up. he only had a couple of days training with the team give him a chance, remember he did well enough for millwall in the play off final. i know everyone loves him but mccormack has struggled lately just cuz he is club captain doesnt mean he has to play every game, hope its just a dip in form and hes back at his best very soon..smirg kcab wrote:Bit harsh on Ward and Navarro there mate. Haven't seen, them much yet, and they definitely haven't fully blended into the squad yet. Have patience, have faith. In Paolo we trust!old town robin wrote:O/t/r Rooney at Preston was absolute dire, and have been when ever he has started. OnwArds and upwards Loan out or send back, both rooneys, ward,Navarro . and bring in a decent r/b as devera is not up to playing out of position.Psychedelic Syd wrote: It will be good to have Roberts fit and able to start although I have heard he is prone to injury. De Vita has been one of the stand out performers for us so far this season so will be an interesting battle. Miller is going to have to battle to keep his place too. Hope the show gets back on the road with a win at Carlisle. Too early to talk of a "slump"- every team goes through patches of poor results. COYROnly saw Roberts the once against Palace and he looked a class act. In his absence, Luke Rooney should at least be making the bench as an alternative to Raffa if required.
To compare him with Pericard and Dossevi after little more than 90 minutes is like the people that said Bostock was carp after a 20 minute (out of position) cameo at Wembley.
It is noticeable that a scapegoat has been missing on this board since Risser went to Stevenage...
Give these players a chance before condemning them to the scrap heap.
