YOUTH RUGBY: Bassett under 16s run riot
6:00am Wednesday 19th September 2012 in Sport
Wootton Bassett Under 16s ran in 12 of the 13 tries scored in their 79-6 demolition of Swindon.
The county champions were in ruthless mood in their first Wiltshire Cup match of the season.
Bassett’s Tom Fieldsend began the scoring in the third minute and he went on to bag 27 points following two more tries and six conversions.
Further tries came from Darcy Beal (3) Sam Fry and Ben Park, the latter of which also slotted a conversion between the posts.
Corey MacLaren-Hunt helped himself to two tries and a 20m break from scrum-half Harry Read resulted in the ball being touched down once more.
Number eight Joe Pettit rounded off the match with another try after a brilliant charge from halfway.
Meanwhile, a tough pre-season training regime set up Wootton Bassett Under 15s’ convincing 34-10 win over Frampton Cotterell.
Centre Tom Davies' solo run from 40 metres got the ball rolling before a further try from winger Sam Haskell gave the home side a 12-point advantage.
Frampton Cotterell replied with two well-worked tries before winger Charlie Endicott powered over for Bassett.
Davies grabbed his second try and Matt Roberts and Andy Campbell then crossed the whitewash to ensure victory.
The under 15s start their Wiltshire Cup campaign at Westbury this Sunday.
Elsewhere, an experimental Wootton Bassett Under 14s side narrowly lost out 29-25 to Melksham.
Stoneham enjoyed his first experience of playing on the wing as he ran in two tries following excellent play at the breakdown and slick handling by the backs.
Rookie outside-centre Harper added to the scoring with a searing run, while number eight Mutton twice crossed the whitewash to provide Bassett with a 25-5 half-time lead.
A number of substitutions and positional changes took place at the break, and in the second period Melksham bounced back to secure the win.
The under 14s face local rivals Minety at Ballards Ash on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Bassett Under 13s opened the season with a solid 24-7 victory at Corsham. Tries were scored by Russ (2), Humphries and Park, while Higginson was successful with two conversions.
