BOWLS: Carter leads Shrivvy quartet to victory

A RINK from host club Shrivenham led by Keith Carter won the annual Shrivenham Mixed Open Floodlight Tournament sponsored by Wadworth Brewery.

The event was held last week over five nights, and was the first time in the eight seasons since the competition was started in 2005 that a Shrivenham team had won the first prize.

Despite only finishing second in their section on shots difference over Julia Hunt’s Wanborough rink and claiming a place in the semi-finals, Keith Carter’s Shrivenham quartet went on to win a closely fought 12-ends final 10-9 against Highworth .

The lead changed hands a couple of times, at seven ends the teams were level at 4-4 but at nine ends Shrivenham trailed 5-6.

They hit back with a three and a count of two to lead Highworth 10-6 and then hung on for a tense 10-9 victory despite dropping a three on the 12th and last end.

Shrivenham had qualified for the final with a 12-7 win over Fairford, while Highworth had beaten 2009 and 2010 tournament winners Swindon Town Gardens 14-10 in the semi-finals.

Previous winners Town Gardens won the third and fourth place play-off as they did last season with a 13-9 success over Fairford, despite conceding five shots on the last three ends.

Fourteen teams took part in the event, with winners Shrivenham picking up £200 as well as the trophy from chairman Roger Powell.
