BOWLS: Wanborough remembers former skip
6:00am Thursday 27th September 2012 in Sport
WANBOROUGH staged a charity bowls match on their green at Hoopers Field against a Swindon Post Office representative side in memory of former club captain Ray Miller.
They played a special seven-rink game against Swindon Royal Mail with all proceeds raised on the day going to the Swindon and South West Asbestos Group.
Miller, who previously played for Supermarine and Cricklade before joining Wanborough in late 2008, had just retired from the Post Office last year but passed away only a few months later from an asbestos-related illness.
He was a competitive bowler who played in both of Wanborough’s Wiltshire and Swindon & District League sides.
The Post Office representative team was assembled by Terry Costello, Eric Collier and Dave Woodbridge and consisted of past and present employees. They ran out convincing winners on the day, 181-107.
A total of almost £300 was raised at the match and added to the money collected during the season took the grand total to £700.
A cheque for this sum was presented by Wanborough Bowls Club chairman Bill Suter last Saturday afternoon prior to the end-of-season presidents versus captains day match to Brigitte Chandler, a founder member of the Swindon Asbestos Group.
