HANS Andersen is gunning for a big performance in Torun tonight to convince the Grand Prix organisers he is deserving of a wildcard for next year’s series.

The Dane goes into the final GP of the season 20 points behind Andreas Jonsson who currently holds ninth place in the standings, which has become an automatic qualifying spot for next season following the retirement of three-time world champion Jason Crump.

While it is not impossible, the Robins skipper knows he faces a tough ask to leapfrog Jonsson, but hasn’t ruled out the possibility of earning one of the four wildcards available for next year.

“If I put in a very big performance and close that gap right down I might be able to have someone look my way wildcard-wise, you never know,” he said.

“I have shown on occasions what I can do, so you never know, and if I do that on a regular basis I can be up there again.

“You just have to look at Nicki (Pedersen) who has been down at number 10 for the last few years and now he is in second place fighting for the title, so it is never over.

“I will go through the Grand Prix Challenge whether I get a wildcard or not because I have managed to get all the way to the final in the last two seasons, so I am confident I can go through that again.

“You need a bit of luck to do it, and I didn’t really get that last week in Gorican otherwise I would have gone through, but that is one of those things.”

“I just want to go out on a high at the end of the season because this campaign hasn’t gone the way I really wanted it to.”

With the race for the world title going right to the wire, Chris Holder and Nicki Pedersen are separated by only two points going into the event at the Marian Rose Motoarena, with Holder having the advantage of racing on his Polish home track.

But reigning world champion Hancock is only eight points further back, and Andersen believes the American shouldn’t be written off just yet.

“Everyone keeps saying it is either going to be Chris or Nicki, but Greg Hancock is still in there too and if Chris and Nicki have a decent night and score eight or nine points, Greg can go out there and score 20 and win it,” he said.

“I don’t want to put a name on it because it is very open, and there are things for and against all of the riders.

“If Nicki can gate like he did at Vojens he can win it, but saying that it is Chris’s home track and he has been there a few years now, and Nicki doesn’t normally perform at Torun.”
