SWINDON TOWN: Bessone happy to fill any role

Town's Federico Bessone Town's Federico Bessone

MR VERSATILE is hardly the title Federico Bessone expected to be landed with when he signed for Swindon Town, but the Argentinian is more than happy to take on the role to help the Robins push for promotion.

Bessone joined Town on transfer deadline day, penning a six-month deal with the Wiltshire club and has since played six times in the red of his latest club.

However, the former Leeds and Swansea man has occupied three different positions during that short time in SN1 - with Paolo Di Canio using Bessone at right-back, left-back and on the left wing.

The last time Bessone played wide in midfield was as a teenager but he said he is willing to fill in wherever necessary as Di Canio deals with a sudden flurry on injuries.

“I don’t mind. As soon as I’m able to help the team I want to do that,” he said.

“In any position I am going to try my best to help the team. It’s not a problem. I just think to work hard and do my best and if I play left winger try to go forward and, in that case, help Jay in defensive positions.

“I used to play left winger but it was 12 years ago. If the gaffer needs me there then I will play there.

“He (Di Canio) didn’t tell me anything, just I’m going to be ready if he needs me to play there. I’m just going to be ready as I was last week.

“I didn’t know I had to play as a left winger.

“If the gaffer needs me as a central midfielder I’ll try to do my best.”

Bessone honestly admitted that the first quarter-of-an-hour at Bury on Saturday provided a real test as he came in for the crocked Gary Roberts.

But with the help of his teammates he quickly found a rhythm.

“It’s not easy because sometimes I was a little bit lost. Sometimes I was too deep, sometimes a little bit out of position,” he said.

“In the first 10 or 15 minutes I was a little bit lost but the gaffer’s been helping me and also the teammates were correcting me a little bit and after 20 minutes I think I was in a good position.

“I practised during the week but I didn’t expect to play as a left winger. It’s not a problem, if I have to play as a left winger I will do my best.

“I am not a tricky player like Gary for example but I try to go forward, help in defensive positions and stuff like that.

“I haven’t seen anyone else away from their position. Everyone has their position and because we are struggling on the left he decided to put me in that position.”

Is Raffa carrying a knock or was he also injured. No disrespect to Besonne but if we are struggling to fill the left midfield/wing position why is Paolo not recalling Luke Rooney from Burton or is he another one for the exit door.

Roberts was only rested on Sat After an injury so is back now so this whole debate is irrelevant as he will play against Coventry
.
Unless of course he has had a reaction which has been kept quiet

That will be good news as Roberts is one of those who makes a huge difference when he plays.

Having seen Bessone play a few times I have not been impressed, but, if he is being used as a "make do and mend" player, while others are recovering from injury then I have little or no complaint.

Being used like this he is certainly giving us value for money, but at the same time there is a trade off, and his game is never going to be at its best playing in so many positions, not his fault, but perhaps a discovery in being such a universal player. Like many others I thought he was on loan, why I don't know, and I also had the impression he was a right back not a left sided player.

Bessone versatile ?? That must mean he's rubbish wherever he plays?

Bessone says he tries to go forward !! Don't make me laugh, he has never crossed the half way line the time I've seen him.

He's better than Bessone in that position. Bessone isn't better than anyone in any position.

Definitely a left back but not in Jay's class even if he did play for Swansea!
...
His distribution is awful and he panics when he should be distributing the ball calmly.....I'm sure he is way better than he has shown us to date but I'd rather have Jay in left midfield if both have to cover the left side.....but then you weaken a strong defence.

I'd play Storey as a left winger being honest - his pace with the odd good cross will terrify the opposition.

Agreed, all I was saying is, he is doing a job, not always in his best position. Jay is by far and away one of the best left backs we have had in a very long time, his timing is superb and his distribution best of the team right now.

Nice one jayden! Took a while for the penny to drop though. Maybe you've hit the nail on the the head - he's so versatile that he can fill a role filling rolls when he's not in the matchday squad and we're short of catering staff?
