YOUNG SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR: MORGAN GASCOIGNE MORGAN Gascoigne was left speechless after scooping the Young Sportswoman of the Year award.

The Swindon Harrier, who lives in Calne, saw off strong competition to snatch the accolade.

She was nominated for her incredible year in long and triple jump, which included titles in both events at the South West Schools’ Championships.

Gascoigne also broke the Wiltshire long jump record that had stood for four decades and was selected as county captain for the English Schools’ Championships.

Also nominated were Olympic rhythmic gymnast Jade Faulkner, international judo player Steph Walker and fellow Harrier Keeleigh Chapman.

And while Gascoigne was thrilled to triumph, she admitted she was dumbfounded by the success, bearing in mind the achievements of her fellow nominees.

She said: “I hadn’t even considered winning the award. In a way I was actually considering not coming after I heard what the other girls in the category had achieved.

“Yes, my achievements are big for me, but some of their achievements were phenomenal.

“(Steph Walker) went to the Commonwealth Judo Championships aged 14, and I was just like, wow.

“For me to even get a chance to be up with those stars was just amazing.”

Gascoigne will hope to continue her improvement when the track and field season begins again soon.
