On the wettest edition of the Highworth Running Club’s annual cross country fun run, 129 competitors found their inner amphibian and slithered and swam their way around the 5.3 mile waterlogged circuit. After a dozen horse jumps Highworth town resident Gavin Wedlake turned into the final straight neck and neck with Corsham Running Club’s Stuart Henderson.

But Wedlake’s current good form proved too hard to beat as he sprinted over the line to record the first win in the event’s six-year history for the hosting club.

Both Wedlake and Henderson were followed home by Avon Valley Runners’ Justin Peters. In the ladies race the Chippenham Harriers were in indomitable form and were only separated by unaffiliated Lucy Kershaw in second place, behind race winner Claire Francis and ahead of Michelle Maxwell.

Incredibly, the efforts of the podium place runners was matched by the inventiveness of the fancy dress costumes in circulation all vying for the coveted ‘best fancy dress’ award.

The Highworth Running Club were raising money or the Riding for the Disabled charity.
