WENDY Nicholls produced one of the best performances of her illustrious career to finish runner-up at the World Duathlon Championships in Spain, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

Representing Great Britain, the Fairford-based athlete had gold within her grasp at one stage but ultimately had to dig deep to hold off surging American Vanessa Cook to win 45-49 Female AG silver by just two seconds.

“This was my first international medal and the most satisfying result since my running days,” said Nicholls. “I hadn’t had the greatest build-up and wasn’t as run fit as I would have liked but I felt determined and confident I could get onto the podium.”

Nicholls started well in the 10k run, clocking 39mins 36secs to come in well clear of the field and 2:35 ahead of eventual champion Annette Corydon.

A swift transition enhanced her advantage heading onto the bike ride, although Corydon gradually cut back her advantage.

“I was still leading going into the final lap of the bike when I was overtaken by the ex-elite Danish woman (Corydon),” added Nicholls.

“I didn’t let this worry me and once out on the 5k run, there was no way I was going to lose the silver medal. My 5k run was painful and my (lack of) run fitness was showing with the US girl catching me all the time,” said Nicholls. “So massive thank to my husband Justin, who was shouting at me to sprint to the line. I crossed it arms in the air with a couple of seconds to spare.”
