SWINDON Harriers signed off the season in style by winning the league and qualifying for the Premier League promotion play-off match, which would see them face the strongest teams from the south of England and Wales.

The Harriers U13 and U15s went the duration of the season unbeaten for the second year in succession.

A result which further indicates of the strength in depth and the hard work going on at the club, as it strives to establish itself as one of the top junior clubs in the south of England.

The Swindon side put in a great display in the promotion play-off, with numerous athletes securing personal bests.

Despite this, it was not quite enough to secure promotion as a the Harriers claimed a sixth-place finish behind clubs such as Bristol, Cardiff and Bath will mean the club will need to try again next year.

The Quad Kids (U11s) also put in a positive performance, as they set a club record of 1,967 points, in addition to three individual club records.

Fin Keating registered 40.05m in the Vortex Throw, while Sam Rai clocked a record time of one minute 53.10 seconds and the boys claimed the final milestone, with a points haul of 884.

However they were unable to clinch the league title as Woking managed 1,743 points in their 3rd round match and followed that up with an amazing 1,745 points in Round 4. Comparatively, the Harriers did well to finish second in a league of 24 clubs, with just 14 points between the top two, especially considering the club only started an U11 competition squad in 2013 and finished well down the table in their first year.

Steve Sparkes, who is a coach at the club, was quick to praise the group following their result at the weekend.

“Each and every one of our young athletes should feel very proud to have played their part and for those moving up to Foundation,” he said.

“They are giving the coaches in that group real hope for the future with expanding our talent base.”

Overall, the boys finished in fifth place (their highest ever finishing position) and the girls finished in third place.
