TEENAGE sisters Katy and Lucy Smith were the most successful bowlers in the annual Westlecot Indoor Club Championship finals They both won two titles, Katy, 17, lifting the lady’s singles championship, defeating holder Lucy in the final. Lucy, 18, bounced back to beat holder Tom Pittuck to win the under 25 singles crown. The two Smith girls combined for a very comfortable win in the ladies’ pairs final.

Their father Neil Smith retained his men’s singles crown with a 21-15 victory over Ian Jefferies,.

As the Westlecot club men’s and lady’s singles winners both Neil and Katy Smith will represent the club in next season’s National Champion of Champions competitions.

A new club competition was introduced this season - New Open Singles - aimed at those members at Westlecot who have never won a singles competition at the Old Town club or anywhere else indoors.

In the final Keith Williamson had to come from behind to beat Terry Walton after trailing for most of the match.

The men’s pairs final saw holders Kevin Embling and Ian Jefferies lose out to Denis Holborow and Terry Walton on an extra end.

Jefferies made amends for his two defeats in the men’s singles and pairs by combining with Maureen Rogers, a sub for the unavailable Ellen Bolland, to roar to a comfortable victory in the mixed pairs over Val and Brian Coles.

The men’s triples was a close affair with the trio of Josh Cottle, Lawrence Smith and James Nobbs winning 15-12.

While the Over 60s men’s and ladies’ pairs saw comfortable wins for the pairings of Josie Lloyd and Rosemary Nichols as well as holders Kevin Embling and Dave Snell.

Neil and his two daughters Lucy and Katy now will have turned their focus to the national indoor championships at Melton and District that commenced yesterday.

Lucy and Katy are competing in the ladies’ pairs championship starting today (1pm) and face Pat Watson and Daphne Wood (Chigwell, Essex) in the last 16.

Neil along with Kevin Embling and Ian Jefferies face a last 16 tie in the men’s triples next Wednesday against Spalding.

Meanwhile Lucy Smith returns to the green at Melton & District (Leics) next Friday (4pm) when she plays Rhoda Young (Bounds Green, Middlesex) in the last 16 of the ladies’ national singles championship.
