WESTLECOT indoor teams enjoyed a winning double in national inter-club team knock-out competitions last Sunday .

The Old Town club’s two mixed senior and junior sides recorded a comfortable 90-61 second round victory over Gloucester in the Egham Trophy, while the U25 team edged Bristol 40-37 in round one of the David Cornwell U25 Double Rinks championship.

In the Egham match, Westlecot won on three of the four rinks with Dave Snell’s home quartet recording the biggest winning margin of 20 shots. Ian Jefferies rink won by ten and Tom Walkley’s rink by three shots.

But they were denied a clean sweep when Chris Cheesley’s rink who were 17-14 up at 18 ends dropped a four on the 21st end to lose by four.

Westlecot though were always in control of this Egham Trophy match against Gloucester after making a fast start.

Across the board they led 23-15 at five ends, 45-26 at ten before pulling away to move 71-35 clear at 15 and 86-47 at 18 and finally won overall by 29 shots.

Westlecot meet Herefordshire side Leominster in the third round on Sunday, November 30. In round two Leominster beat Cotswold 82-67.

Rink honours were shared at one-all in the David Cornwell U25 Double Rinks first round match against Bristol.

The home quartet of Gary Jackson, Jake Webster, Craig Hatherall and Mike Titcombe lost by four shots but this deficit was completely wiped out as the away rink of Lucy and Katy Smith plus Craig Morphet and Kyle Anderson won their game in Bristol by seven shots.

In the second round on the weekend of December 20/21 Westlecot will face MidGlos who had a first round bye.

NATIONAL championship events have only reached the area finals stages so far this indoor season in two competitions, the men’s and ladies’ champion of champions and have to be played by November 23.

In Area 10, Neil Smith (Westlecot) is set to lock horns again with Malvern Hills’ Ryan Atkins who beat him 21-14 last year in the area final and went onto win the national champion of champions title at Hayling Island.

But Smith beat England U25 international Atkins recently in the quarter-finals of the planetbowls.com Grand Prix finals staged in Boston (Lincs).

To set-up his meeting with Atkins again Smith has beaten Nigel Cansdale (Fairford) 21-15 and Neil Chandler (Cotswold) 21-12.

Katy Smith, 17, the youngest daughter of Neil, is also through to the Area 10 champion of champions final in the ladies section.

On the way to the final she accounted for Pauline Tuckey (Fairford) 21-7 and Deborah Hurford (Cotswold) 21-5 and now meets last year’s Area 10 champion Gill Fry (Gloucester) in the final.

Last season Fry beat Katy’s elder sister Lucy, 19, in the area final on the way to clinching a place in the last 16 at Hayling Island.
