WESTLECOT’S hopes of claiming another national inter-club indoor team title are over for this season.

The ladies at the Old Town club crashed out of the Yetton Plate last weekend, losing in the third round to Worcestershire side Bromsgrove.

Despite leading on two rinks after 18 ends they failed to win on any of the four rinks - two home and two away - as they went down 87-53.

Forced to make four changes to the side that won in the previous round against Fairford, owing to illness and injuries, Westlecot were always playing catch-up.

They trailed 20-12 after five ends, 43-24 at halfway and had slipped further back at 15, trailing 66-35.

But Westlecot rallied slightly, with Carol Coombs’ rink going 16-12 up away at 18 ends and Wendy Anderson’s four leading 16-15 at home to only trail 71-49 overall at 18.

However, they could not maintain that momentum before the finish.

n IN NATIONAL championships and competitions played over the past eight days in Area 10, Westlecot have registered a poor set of results.

Dave Snell is through to the area final in the O60s singles after his semi-final opponent, Paul Glastonbury (Cotswold), conceded the match as he was suffering from a back injury. Snell now faces either Alan Woodbridge or Jack Dempsey, both from MidGlos, in the area final.

Snell, the reigning national senior outdoor singles champion, is therefore still on course to complete what would be a unique seniors indoor and outdoor singles double.

However, the Wootton Bassett bowler, together with Kevin Embling and Ian Jefferies, are out of the O50s triples. They lost 18-10 in the area final on Wednesday night at Malvern Hills to a home trio led by Mark Atkins.

Wednesday also saw Dave Matthews and John Thomas go down 22-18 at home in the area semi-final of the O60s pairs to John Heathcote and Wilf Sutherset (Cotswold, Stroud).

In the women’s section, Val Coles, Jenny Vowles and Rosemary Nichols were beaten 28-10 in the area triples final by Maryanne Pye (MidGlos), while Linda Perfitt and Wendy Anderson lost 19-12 in the O60s area pairs final to Ann Leach and Pauline Gunn (MidGlos).

Westlecot bowlers will be hoping for better fortunes this weekend as several compete in Area 10 national championship or national competition semi-final or finals.
